Wanting to do my clutch. I want to pull the engine instead of the trans, transfercase, and overdrive unit. Pros and cons? Reason for this is to clean up engine bay and reseal the engine. What do y’all think? Bad idea?

pull it all together??
there will be nothing holding the trans combo in place
either pull it all
or
drop the trans combo then pull the engine

I've done it, using a jack and multiple ratchet straps to keep the trans combo in place. it is possible, not sure I would do it that way again.

The engine, tranny, tcase combo go in a helluva lot easier when the body is off.

So I've heard.

In all reality it's pretty simple to pull the tranny-tcase all at once, then you're almost home. Pulling the engine and all is easy as well, although a little more intrusive.

The trans is only held on with bell housing bolts??

Like everyone said, pull it all. Whether in one unit or drop trans and t-case, then pull engine. You can clean it all real well, reseal everything easily, take the body off and go over it, rehab the frame, may as well raptor liner the underside of the tub since it’s down to bare metal at this point while the seats are off getting recovered….

But really, pull all the power train.

The block, head, exhaust manifold, bell housing, transmission and the guts of the transfercase are all either steel or cast iron. Oh yeah, crank, cam, flywheel, valve train….
so its just easier just to pull the transmissions even if it has never been pulled. I was just worried about rust bolts and lines

Most of the rusted bolts you'll encounter will be when taking the interior and body panels off. Either way you do it, the tranny hump will have to be removed. You shouldn't have a problem with major component fasteners.

Start some pre soaking with some penetrant and wire bush the exposed threaded ends of the fastener from underneath if possible. Take your time, it's always easier to eventually remove the fastener than to drill them out.

I vote pull it all at once and put it in the same way. Take the starter off the I6, it give you more wiggle room. Pull the manifolds out too. Good plan to mark the position and pull the dizzy. Remove the radiator and tilt the bib forward. An A frame on wheels, the HF engine leveler and a good chainfalls. Lift the assembly some, roll the rig back some or move the A frame adjust the tilt, raise/move/adjust

Is this less work than just pulling the transmission, transfercase and overdrive? Seems like it would be easier to do that but I need to seal some stuff in the overdrive. I’m not worried about the body since it’s already pretty rusty and it’s a 69. No one wants a 69 don’t even have power brakes

You might want to remove the od unit. check this thread out

I once spent hours trying to put the tranny/transfer back in. I wasn't boy enough to do do it by myself. I pull the engine, put on the T/T and slung the assembly back in, and was done in minutes. I have pulled/installed the assembly in about 3 hours by myself start to finish several times. I6, 3sp on the floor. Your OD might be an issue
