Has anyone used the brake booster for their ‘77+ FJ40? I’m looking to replace mine on my resto and this seems to be the best option.

Before I started the frame off, my brake pedal was inconsistent. Sometimes it would work perfectly, other times I would have to pump them up. Every other component of the brakes will be new, or rebuilt, so basically this is the last item to address.

If you have to pump your brakes to get them to work, a new booster won’t fix your problem.

I have cityracer’s booster on my 1980. My original booster was shot & this was the best replacement I could find. Works great & I’d buy it again if I had another 40 to put it on.

For what it's worth, I just received his drum brake version today for my '76 and will be posting pictures of the install here. To be honest I'm 95% sure it was my master cylinder that needed to be replaced, but while I'm tearing it apart I figure a new booster is semi-cheap insurance given it's the wife's daily driver.

It looks to be well made, the depth didn't need adjusting, and it's about half the size of my original (which may have been a dual diaphragm like you'd need).

Your ‘76 should have disc brakes on the front, why would you be using a drum brake booster then? I have a ‘76 as well and I installed the disc brake booster from Cityracer and it seemed to have worked out fine. I have only test drove my rig around the block a few times, so no high speed testing as of yet. However I did attempt to lock the brakes up to no avail. It was slick conditions too, raining outside. Maybe got up to 15mph and slammed on the brakes and just came to a nice sudden stop, no locking up at all. Anyways, I’m just curious why you went with the drum brake booster.

Yes sir, you’re right, I was just commenting that I was having the issue before the frameoff and that’s why I figured it was good insurance to replace/rebuild the entire system. The brake system was terribly neglected when I bought the rig. There was crap and sludge in all brake caliper pistons and the master.

This 40, when it’s done, will be my ride for the entire Pan-American Highway. Thus, I’m trying to make sure all systems are 100%. Don’t want to be in nowhere S. America and have issues that could have been prevented.

I used his booster on my recent build. Discs on each corner. Stops like a sports car!

I hear what you're saying, and I wish I did have disc. I'll probably upgrade in a few years after other fixes. Mine is a 1/76 and from what I understand, not every 40 was converted to disc immediately after 9/75. That's not to say someone didn't swap out an older front axle for whatever reason, because my engine was swapped with a '79. If only she could talk...

I installed @Racer65 's 4wheel Drum Brakes on A NON USA 1/79 FJ43 , I was replacing a bad booster leaking fluid from a bad master leaking fluid , His Booster is a Quality part , With factory Fit & Finish , I also purchased and installed His foil decal

Not for bling factor so much ............well not really

, i stamped the original OEM part# in the new foil decal on it now it reflects a correct by the book replacement

also oreded the paper / fiber OEM toyota gasket that goes between the master & the new city Racer booster

I have the cityracer drum booster on my 72 running discs on the front. Works great fit and finish are top quality.

Well, I guess that solves it. New booster for me. Thanks for all the info. MUD is great.

I have one on my ‘78. Had a very tough time adjusting rod clearance but my mechanic said it is a two person job. That said I have awesome brakes now and would buy his booster again-works fantastic!!

I bought the disc dual diaphragm for the wilwood swap F/R, did a new master while I was at it and all I can say it's pretty awesome and worth it knowing my brake system is completely renewed.

We are all good at getting other people to spend money!

I dont know why, but your post cracks me up. So true! Reminds me of when someone has a simple engine issue and people start telling them they should take the whole engine apart and put it back together the right way. lol.

But to the OP's question... no need to question Roger's quality. The guy only sells the best. Literally never heard of anyone having issues.

A better replacement is an FJ80 booster and master. You'll need a 12mm spacer off the firewall and maybe trim the rib but you'll be outstopping Lambo's in no time.
