Found this while at work going through some old case files. Thought maybe some folks would like to see how much an old FJ cost back in the day. Sitting next to a CJ and a Branco! Can anyone tell if this was expensive back in the day?

An inflation caculator puts it at $20,732.51 in 2020

1976 Totota camera MSRP $2,789. hard to know what was expensive...but given in 1976 not everybody wanted a 4WD I would guess it’s pretty expensive. Minimum wage in 1976 was $2.30, and according to census data the median household incum was $12,690. In 2020 its $68k. So there ya go—some metrics to make your judgements!

The FJ40 in the photo says 'like new' (implying used) and is older than the '76 Bronco shown. So, I'm guessing it's a '74 LC - so priced quite a bit less than new.

That’s pretty awesome. I can‘t say I have anything like that.

My neighbor bought his ‘79 FJ40 new off the lot in Michigan in 1980 for $5200. He flipped it on a patch of black ice in 1986 and the insurance company declared it a total loss. They gave him $4800, making his 6 year cost of ownership $400.

Hows that for math?

Jake it’s difficult to tell what year that clipping is from. While the Bronco is newer than the 40 and the Jeep, the Bronco appears to be sitting in the used car lot. But to answer your question, yes it’s expensive, because it’s being sold at Woody Anderson Ford! ;) Are you a member of HOT South Cruisers yet?

That invoice would make a good poster.

Maybe I'm missing one, but it refers to, "skidplates," plural.

While the engine bay has a number of splash guards those are not skid plates. But there is one spot weld to the oil pan. May not be removable but it is a skid plate.

I’m definitely a member and have been to a few meetings. Need to join another soon

I miss the autotrader. I spent hours between the ages 15 and 16 dreaming about my first vehicle paging through tattered copies of them squinting at the tiny grainy B&W photos. It’s how I found my first rig, which was sadly not an FJ40!

one of the brochures mentions the skid plate on the oil pan and one to protection the transmission...so yes plural.

Ok, so this might be the tread where I tell the price I paid for my brand new Landcruiser in 1970, I worked for Toyota Motor Sales USA, paid $2800.00, window sticker was $3,300.00. To date I haven't seen a lower price paid for a brand new Landcruiser posted here on Mud.

That's a great reference point, Downey. For another, I paid almost $2000 for my '70 in late '76 so it held it's value pretty well for a used car.

Cripes, I built a custom (almost show car) 1975 Landcruiser in about 1976/1977, sold it for $12,000 when brand new ones were selling for about $8,000.
