Charcoal canister replacement 80 Series?

For people who are rebuilding their factory container what are you doing for the fabric filters? Cleaning and reinstalling or sourcing new material? I saw someone cut up some N95 masks but was hoping for a better solution. Seems to me the fabric is mostly to retain the carbon so any replacement probably just needs to be resistant to fuel and fine enough to not let the carbon pass through. Thoughts?

Good question, I was laying towards flattening out one of the fancier home air filters with the accordion fold material. I have no idea how it holds up to fuel vapors.

I had the AC120 and hated how it fit so I ended up rebuilding the the factory canister with new charcoal.

I replaced the filters with maple syrup finishing filters. They look like a cone but you can cut out the size you need to the canister.

I also drilled out the check valve and cleaned the secondary check valve in the center breather tube and replace the filter there.

No issues so far.

Happen to have a link to where we could purchase said filters?

I put in a Chinese copy of the Delco unit and honestly it is not horrible. Still prefer the original.

Use a charcoal can from an FZJ105 like @OGBeno mentioned and will solve these problems that plague the aftermarket units. It's a much better fit and Toyota quality.

Is this available anywhere in the CONUS? or is there a reliable overseas source that can be recommended?

Overseas only.

You can check with usual overseas suppliers for procurement.

David Stedman @Japan4X4 might be able to assist but I doubt that PN will appear in the JDM catalog due to it belonging to FZ100/105 and the JDM never received that platform.

I found it through Partsouq, readily available but that was a couple years back. Now its not showing available but I imagine you'll be able to source it from another supplier. Maybe Megazip? Good luck. Be sure to get the hoses for it too.

I’ve installed this, works very well. Ordered from Partsouq.

I've got a question about this. My 97's fuel pump will start whining as the fuel level drops, and the louder it gets, the more pronounced of a hiss I'll get when I pull the gas cap. It's an outflow, and it gets strong enough to spittle gas. I did the tests in the manual, and they passed, but I don't think I did them with everything hot and whining. Are these symptoms more likely from the vacuum valve under the intake?

Does anyone have a good solution for the 92-94 F ZJ80 charcoal canister hoses, now discontinued, part numbers 77754-60160 and 90445-12268 ?

I ordered the hoses for a 95+ hoping for a close fit, parts 77754-60180 and 77795-60020. It looks like the 77754-60180 will work, maybe with some slight reshaping, but the 77795-60020 is too short.

I have the original canister.

I think I just use a section of 1/4" Gates transmission hose I had lying around. A bit tight, but otherwise fine.

I saw one post saying they used 3/8", and you used 1/4" and it was a bit tight. That's a range of about 7mm to 9mm or so, so I'll give those a shot.

What's the best type of hose for carrying the gasoline-laden vapor? I'm replacing all my hoses and it seems it's the hoses carrying gasoline vapor or crank vapor that were in the worst shape, even with original OEM quality. I want to make sure I specify the right stuff.

Thanks,

T.

I just looked at the leftover stub in my garage, it is 3/8" Gates 400psi Transmission Cooler hose I had leftover from doing the transmission lines. I did not really think through transmission fluid vs. fuel line or other. It was what I had on hand and not coolant line. I have just been through the same hose change out you have done and I will admit I did not give a lot of thought into these hoses. The construction of the transmission has is pretty stiff and not easy to work with anywhere.
