Very cool. Whats the advantage of timer?

It lightens your wallet by $500???

Seriously, the timer just makes the spot welds more consistent. Without it, I have to count to 3 seconds or so to get a consistent weld.

Well, I'm back to playing...

I left the good camera at the house today. But I can report that I welded the rocker panel back on.

Tacked it into place...

Then killed some time...

Then tacked it more, and more, and more... Once I had a tack weld about every inch or so, I basically just added a tack onto the end of each tack, working front, then back, then front, then back....

After a LONG time, I ended up with a nearly continuous weld bead...

I'm pleased with it. It's definitely far from perfect, but that's due to the dents and deformation in the original metal. Much of which I just couldn't get behind to straighten as much as I like. So this rocker will definitely see a bit of filler, but I think overall--it'll look great.

I have to run into town to drop the girl off at the airport, and make a quick parts run, but I am planning on finishing that rocker panel before I go to bed. I've got a very, very little bit of welding still to do, then I will spot weld it into place, and then it's time for the grinder! Easy as pie, right?

Glad to see some progress, as I need some inspiration/motivation.

I finally got my CCOT rear sill and corner channels.
Waiting on my quarters and bed from Pacol.

I'm going to need to brace my tub like you so I may need some measurements when the time comes...

Backing up....

Before I put the rocker on I had to repair some rust (and a spot where I went too far with the spot weld cutter) in this little tab...
rocker tab.webp

And here's some more close up shots of the rocker welds.

And here's one with the spot welds done. I decided to spot weld it to the flange before I finished the weld just to help keep it even more square and straight.

And here's a few pictures of the seam with the grinding mostly done...

And with as much grinding as I'm going to do for the time being, and a light coat of primer on it (to protect it, and to see how it looks)

You can clearly see towards the front of the rocker panel the crease that is caused by the original door sill being just a little bent in (about 1/8" maybe), while I left the new rocker panel straight. I filled the gap between the two with weld, and I'll probably just use filler to smooth all that out. But I COULD just build up weld above the seam and then grind it down smooth....

Either way, there will be a little filler, but never more than 1/16", and I can live with that. Because the quarters aren't going to be welded to dented up, bent up metal I shouldn't have this problem dealing with them.

Fingers crossed...

Got any close-up shots of the sill? What do you think of the quality (CCOT)?

As requested some close ups of CCOT Rear Sill and Corner Channels. If you need something else let me know and I will snap some more photos.

Thanks Longhunter - looks like it's well made - I may need to go to CCOT for my 78 sill (older style) and lower quarter corners.

Dan,

Any news from Albuquerque?

You must be done by now!

AR

Yeh. The word from Albuquerque is that it would be better if I was there. I've been exiled to Indianapolis for training all week. Finally get to go home tomorrow night, so I'll get to work a little bit on Saturday, and Sunday looks like a little impromptu HDC outing, so we'll see what happens.

I'm tempted to take some time off next week so I end up with 8 straight days off (which would probably get the quarters welded on), but something more pressing might be coming up shortly thereafter (more pressing than the cruiser? family), so I might have to shelf those plans for a bit.

We shall see.

Understood. Life get's in the way sometimes.

Turkey Season opens here Saturday and my brother is comin' up so I can put him on a bird, both my boys have soccer games, and I've got to do a lot of work on my backyard landscaping.

Oh yeah, probably important to spend a little time with :princess: and keep everyone happy!

But then it is my turn! :hillbilly:

Got my quarters from PACOL about a month ago, but tonight mock fitted them for the first time. Getting anxious again!

I was told the secret with these aftermarket quarters is to measure the distance from B pillar to ambulance door opening before permanently tacking, making sure hardtop will fit after welded in place.

Anybody care to share some measurements?

I am having some issues with my fuel filler fitting over the flange on the CCOT quarter panel. Did you run into this? Any tricks?

CCOT Quater Panel Issues

Well it has been a while since I have posted on this thread. I have made some progress but am stuck in a hard spot. I have not intalled the Quarter Panel yet but did some pre-measuring to make sure they were both the same size at all points. They're not!! I measured at the very front of the panel and it differs by about 3/16" from the other panel. I measured the back as well and it is at about the same. I called the CCOT rep, Steve and he basically told me it is the nature of the beast and that they have been making them like this for years. I think they have a pretty basic jig. This creates an issue because the quarter panels are hitting the rear crossmember and the same spacing is not the same between the panel and crossmember.

Here are a few more pictures!! As you can see I had the entire think sandblasted to get ride of all the rust.

I don't know if this will help but I've attached 2 photos of my 78's stock quarters where they meet the crossmember. Note - with the sill removed they "fall" a bit and just touch the crossmember at the curves. Before, with the sill in place they just almost touched. The 4 body mounts at the sill/frame "push" the body/quarters up a bit off the crossmember with a tight fit.

I too am concerned about CCOT quality. Still up in the air on where to order my sill and a few other panels.
