EDIT:
Thanks all for the input so far. It looks like my concerns were not misplaced and this is not a good car, just a shiny paint job… I shall continue the search for a BJ42 and please continue to comment so I can learn more and more about what to look out for.

I’m in the search for a BJ42 and came across this. The dealership seem to have bad reviews but they sell on concession so I wonder if anyone knows this car. The dealer tell me the current owner has had it 3 yrs and bought it in this form but has no paperwork or record relating to its restoration or modification. They say it has the B engine but you can clearly see the 3B sticker on the rocker cover so it has been swapped as the chassis is a B. I am suspicious of it but thought it might be worth a look.

As I’m in the UK viewing is not easy so if I can find out anything or find someone who’d go and poke around that would be a great start.

A lot more pictures needed than that … it is a South American import as the front directional are a tell tail sign

Looks like a rush job lipstick from the one pic

Painted over hood bumpers

Rusty windshield pad area

Holes on hood and apron for some sort of hood lock? Maybe that’s been since removed

Something mounted on roof?

It does look pretty however…much nicer than mine … but what lurks is unknown

It would be a start to something for u depending on if it’s in your range and nothing MAJOR wrong from what I can’t see

If you’re in the UK and want a diesel 40 why would you not buy one from Japan?
Buying a Costa Rican truck in Florida makes zero sense.
Also, that truck looks awful. Do not buy that

Thanks for the replies. Having been looking for sometime and having looked around cars that I’m told are good and driven a long way to view only to find major issues and lots of rot I am sceptical on this. The advert has a lot of pictures and a full video

https://www.streetsideclassics.com/vehicles/4145-tpa/1977-toyota-land-cruiser-bj40
but the paint looks questionable in many of the photos. But it does look better than many I have already viewed. But I am wary of buying without an enthusiastic owner to share the experiences with, that’s what these cars are all about surely?!

I just got on their website. There's a lot of weird and unfinished stuff going on there.
A lot of lipstick, it's a typical SA example.

The po should look in the classified section on here. You'll find more honest representations. Shipping is Shipping.

Trust me I am looking from Japan, Australia, Europe and N America. There are very few diesels for sale, of which a small percentage are 42s and 1/2 of those are soft tops. I found a BJ41 in Japan but failed to find any dealer to give me decent pictures let alone any information. Nothing has gone through the auctions for some time let alone at sensible money.

Most cars in Europe are rotten. The majority seem to be in Italy and a large percentage of those elsewhere originated in Italy. I have enquired on cars in Spain, France, Germany and Italy but the sellers won’t respond! No 42’s for sale in the UK and prices here are high.

Buying from the USA/Canada actually isn’t so silly, more enthusiasts, less rust and better prices and shipping is less than road freight across Europe!

I’m seven months in to the search, I’ll keep hunting.

Thank you. Yes I agree hence me asking the experts. (Whilst I’ve owned Cruisers for 30yrs I’ve no experience with 40s) I can assure you I regularly check the classifieds here along with every selling site worldwide I can find! Most US examples are petrol. As we cannot by fuel without ethanol I will not run a 2F here and destroy it! I’d love to buy one from here, knowing it will be from an enthusiast.

2F's do just fine with regular modern pump gas as long as you don't let them sit for more then a year. I have literlly hundreds of 2F customer's here DDing their FJ40's and FJ60's

Thank you. There are lots of companies offering the same vehicles. The beige 1980 BJ41 listed here is one I’ve been trying to find out more about. Price on this site is $33k CIF, BeFoward, a huge export agent lists it at $23k CIF but the car is a dealer car and I can get no further photos or info and the quality of the listed photos is poor.
