what about some dullies for rear wheels?

we are back in sunny southern, california. i will post some pictures later and more about the 12 ht shake down ride. an idea came up on the ride back and want to get your comments and opinions on it.

here is the idea, what about putting on some dullies as my rear wheel? this will widen my wheel base on the rear. on the front i will do the 1.5 to 2" negative offset wheels. my cruiser is not a rock climber, i think it is more classified as "touring" here is projected use 30% 60 to 70 MPH (while in the US) the remaining 70% will be in gravel, washboard, sand, mud and deep bumpy road (3 to 4 foot bumps). i have not seen dullies on overland expedition vehicles. i also have not done the research to find out if they are available for my cruiser. this would most likely mean going to smaller diameter tires and narrower.

what do you all think,? this is my way of thinking comprehensively on my approach to the suspension challenge of our cruiser.

i think we have very much decided on bilstein shocks and airbags. on the ride back there is definitely a lot of shimmy/wandering on the steering. we will try to deal with that using casters shims and steering stabilizer.

happy new year!!!! :bounce::bounce2:

dualies suck in Mud and snow
they will give you more stability and increase your load rating (a bit) but i do not think you will be happy with them where you are going...

2x, that is not a good idea  it will give you no advantage at all!! and a few disadvantages...
bad performance in sand and mud, more expensive and more vulnerable. If you need more load rating just get a tire that provides enough ( for example 255/100 XZL Michelin)

Everybody traveling with old 4x4 trucks to the dessert changes to single wheels for that reason.

Amado,
Maybe I missed it early on in the thread but where are you planning to go once the build is complete?

feliz anio nuevo!!!!!

trek back to los angeles, california

thanks, got it, just an idea, it came from watching so many trucks on the freeway with dullies.

On the ride back to los angeles, california, definitely the 12 ht engine is great, it felt almost twice the power of the 2h, on the passes that where at 4000 feet we where on the 4th and the 5th gear, maybe a couple of times on 3rd. we heard the whining of the turbo almost through out the trip (this new for us). This engine has made a great difference on the Nulla.

the rear manual lockers was also great in the snow.

the one issue that we found was the oil leak, we don't really know at this time where it is coming from, i don't think it is the engine oil seal at the transmission. i think we would have seen this when we had the transmission separated from engine during the clutch installation. we also checked the transfer case and the transmission there was no lost of oil in either. we will check the oil pan gasket next week. any experience of common engine oil leaks on a 12 th would be helpful. in the 3000 mile trip we use about 1 gallon of oil.

the other issue is the power steering the squealing noise and binding continues. we continue to hope that it is just air bubbles.

in the next period we will focus on finishing up the wiring connections and few lose end at Edy's Auto.

then the installation of the 60 gallon fuel tank and the suspension. our goal is to get both done by mid February.

picture below is the new aluminum floor where the 60 gallon tank will be located.

the other great new is that we are able to install 220 volt outlet at our home during the holiday, soon as i find a reasonably priced welding machine that can weld both aluminum and steel we will be able to do most of the welding ourselves.

thank and enjoy :bounce::bounce2:

I dont know if you remember, but I met you at Specters last summer. Looks like you've really come a long way since then.

Way to go!

Just found this thread...awesome build, lots of great info contributed by members. Too much to read right now. Subscribing!

AXT intercooler

anyone have experience with axt intercoolers? they are water air intercoolers here is the link http://www.turbonetics.com.au/AXT2HIntercooler.pdf my engine is a 12th i am told i can use the same intercooler use for the 2h. if you have picture of how it is installed on a 40 series that would be great, especially where did you put the radiator? ..... thanks :bounce::bounce2:

so is this system using the rad or not? it sounds like just the barrel is being used but then it shows the rad and fan in the pic...
i am confused...

yes it uses radiator, fan and pump, here is the axt link Intercooler Kits i looking into air/water because they seem to be more effective at low speed and cleaner installation. the downside is the moving parts. :bounce::bounce2:

I have also decided to go down the air-water route, and to this end have got a set up (from a Celica) off ebay... The cooler is currently in Scotland, so will get it in some weeks and see if it is even possible as space is quite tight. I have also got the front mounted fan from a 105 series, and have to work out how to trigger the pump (boost activated switch?). I don't know your time frame Amado, but my install will be probably within the next month, or failing that in April. Might be worth checking ebay???

what is your reason for going air water route, been going back and forth between the two options, also anyone have experience with the axt air water intercoolers?.... :bounce::bounce2:

Great build, just started reading it yesterday. This may be late but a couple thoughts for you. 1. Thirty years ago we sprayed alumium with zinc chromate primer where it was in contact with steel, this would retard the corrosion between them. 2. If you have a squell when turning with the PS your belt on the PS pump maybe slipping. I had to set up a turn buckle arangment on the pump to keep more tension on the belt .

thanks, we primed both the aluminum and the steel where they are touching, also we isolated the two metal by placing rubber in between. i am also thinking of putting zinc, similar to the one use on boat attached to the aluminum. on the ps we rebuild the pump.:bounce::bounce2:

I decided to go air to water because a lot of my driving here in Ghana is slow speed and high ambient temperatures and humidity - as I see it an air/air will work well with good airflow but less so at slower speeds. I had a very large intercooler (air/air) on my old Defender, but the engine had so little low down torque... it would come alive on the highway, but my highway driving tends to be pretty sedate - although I must admit the novelty of the turbo is taking a long, long time to subside;)

air filter - what is the correct one

i am gonna re do the way my 12ht breath, meaning i will change my air filter and muffler. the muffler will be replace with AT3535XL Resonated Diesel Muffler (aero turbine), i will also remove the catalytic converter.

what i would like to know is what is the correct air filter to install. i currently have an 8 inch diameter donaldson air filter as picture on my thread. i would like to stay with donaldson, i am told they are the "best in the market", i am also told that my current air filter is too small. i would like to keep my air filter mounted outside as pictured on my thread. i am open to changing to other brand of air filters. what is the correct one to make my 12ht breath a lot better?... thanks :bounce::bounce2:

I don't know what Donaldson is, but I would recommend doing what I did and go with a standard light truck air filter (as in light commercial truck). They are common to find the elements and the size should be right. Don't get anything that some guy in a shack won't be able to supply the filter elements for... I made that mistake before.
