negative off set rims

what about different rims, getting the track wider and the wheels futher out? It´s the same for the bearings but one part less to fail and cause breakdowns.
what Diffs are inside FJ or BJ ?
(With the shorter BJ ratio the 255/100 would be perfect...and you should be able to get them in the US too. They are quite expensive, though longlasting)
Everthing has advantages :hhmm:...I think I would go with 35" R16 or the Michelins with different rims or if you dont get any with steal spacers

i have decided to go with a negative offset rims. what do you think is the max i can go? is 2 inches too much? i like the idea of widening the track of my cruiser...thanks :bounce::bounce2:

I'm running 2" wheel spacers with plenty of trails and miles on 'em ( with 10" facotry backspacing wheels ) and no issues so far ..

The stability added it's higly appreciated ..

thanks, forgot to mention my cruiser will be about 8,000 pound when it is all done. do you think the weight will make a difference. :bounce::bounce2:

yes .. but nothing more than more strees on your bearings and studs .. my Tencha ( HJ60 see my sign ) are not a light truck exactly ..

I do usually carry more than 400 pounds on she when go to camping ..

it's all about balance...
if the extra width gives you clearance and/or stability that you need, then you won't mind changing your wheel bearings a little more often, right?

if changing the bearings is too much hassle, then reconsider the extra forces that the extra width will produce.

Seems to me that bearings are pretty cheap compared to extending your axle housing and buying custom axle shafts, which is the only other way I know to get wider stance w/o stress on the bearings.

You might want to be sure to carry spare bearings, grease, and the nuts/washers that hold it all together. Just in case.

Usually one would find a longer axle assembly to substitute rather than trying to extend an existing one.

Throw a pair of FJ62 or FJ80 complete axles in and call it done. Installing the rear is a no-brainer...new perches. Installing the front take a little more work....outboard the spring hangers.

thanks, i will look into this, how much wider are the fj62 or fj80? how much modification do i need to do? are the bolt pattern on the wheels the same? the wide on the front axle is fine i do not need to change that. :bounce::bounce2:

Here is a great tech link about the subject. Its a common swap and doesn't involve too much work. The wheel bolt pattern is the same. BTW, I recently picked up a rig similiar to yours, but yours has a longer wheelbase. Mine's a 79 with H diesel.

i have been reading the thread you suggested, very helpful, the 80 series axel seems to be a good option for my application, if i am reading this correct it is 7 inches wider that the 40 series.... thanks :bounce::bounce2:

by the way will there be an issues if the rear axel is wider that the front by about 7 inches?

1tontoy, that is a nice rig. i have the rear bed that i took out of my rig if you are interested... :bounce::bounce2:

Yes, if the rear is wider by 7 inches, this will greatly decrease your handling. If anything, the front should be wider than the rear. This is standard on most cars/trucks because otherwise the truck will want to roll over when you steer because you will have to over-steer, because you will 'push' into turns.

About you ute bed, where is it? In Washington still?

Donaldson - do i have the correct air filter?

what kind of air filter housing is that? a donaldson? are you sure it will do it's job when mounted like that? some models spin the dust and particles to the "bottom" of the unit which would be the opposite side of the intake inlet. because yours is mounted vertical like that, i'd make sure nothing slips past the filter seal and shoots down your outlet tube going to the engine.

i have since laid down on it's side, but i still don't know what is the CFM on this filter, in another thread it said that the CFM on a 12ht is 450. would like to know if this Donaldson filter is sufficient? i have thought about making the intake hole bigger like 4 or 5 inches. i really like this filter it was the same filter that my 2h was using. i also looked up the filter used on a 12th and a 2h. the part book says that the 2h and 12ht are the same.... thank :bounce::bounce2:

looks big enough, that's for sure.

If it was my truck I'd go with the 80 rear axle and maybe an ifs hub swap up front to reduce the difference in width to about 4". I wouldn't expect a little extra width in the back will be that bad when you consider dualies are much wider rear track.

someone correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't stock LCs a little wider up front than behind? something about making sure that the rear wheel track correctly through turns?

i went to Specter off road with a tape measure and measured the axles, here are the measurements:
40 series 63"
60 series 65"
80 series 69"
i think i have decided to go with a 80 series, about 6 inch wider than my current axles. i currently have front disk brakes (60 series conversion), what rear brake system would you recommend. my choice are a disk brake and a heavy duty drum brakes. SOR have 80 series rear axel that have 3 inch wide brake drums.

i was not aware of the ifs hubs until they where mention here, i just started researching them, i think i just need about 1 inch each side on the front. what does ifs stands for? they look like spacers that goes behind the hub. what is the advantage between an ifs and a wheel spacers? thanks

Have you checked to see where the suspension will sit on the 80 series axle.
My recollection is that the spring will sit too close to the pumkin .
I think is why we dont all have 80 series axles under our 60 and 70 series.
Ive seen it done on a 75 series but I didnt like the end result too much.
