I totally get this line of thought. I debated putting a screen in mine for a long time for the same reasons you state Felicity. I found a single DIN screen stereo that has a few modern conveniences (Bluetooth, etc.) and a smaller screen in attempt to balance out old and the new. I have to admit adding this to my truck has been one of the best upgrades done to it despite me being the purist I am with mine. Its still a bit 'lipstick on a pig' but I think is subtle enough that I have come to terms with the effect it has on originality. I love the manual nature of the 60 series in general, but Bluetooth streaming and handsfree calling sure are nice.

Yeah that one isn’t too gaudy... but that phone?! Holy huge. I’m still loving my little 5s but I’ve heard it’s 3G isn’t going to be supported soon. Guess I need to get that figured out soon.

I just ran two tanks of 91 Octane and it drastically reduced my engine pinging when the motor was under load. I'd always thought it was a waste of money seeing as these motors are such low compression engines. I also got a little better fuel econ (12mpg's according to my mileage app on my iphone) out of the last two tanks but that may be due to no AC usage and different driving conditions on the last two long drives I took. I'm driving from Oakland to Paso Robles today so we'll see what the mileage looks like this trip on 91 Octane.

@Robert Franzke
Regarding the dbl din radio... I totally dig it but I do hear you... I hate the idea of a new temp gauge but I gotta have my tunes right... I suppose the other option is to go dummy radio in the dash and real head in the Tuffy Box/center console maybe...

To the naysayers... Ya'll all got your phones strapped to the windshield or on the dash so you can see your Waze or your Gaia... With the Pioneer you don't have to. Your phone controls are all there. So now you got one less screen. Plus I think you can rig em up to watch DVD's with the kido's.

Patiently waiting instructions and parts list on the swap...

Ha ha. That's actually my Garmin GPS. Since I don't have the giant built in stereo GPS screen we discussed, I gotta use one of the old Garmin GPS things everyone used to have before it was built in to newer cars. Its good though cause its easy to remove to 'get back to stock'.

I however would kill for a new 5S sized phone myself if they made them again. Thought that was the perfect blend of size and capability.

The double DIN is super cool and I totally get why folks put them in these trucks. What they offer in capabilities is pretty good stuff. I thought about a single DIN motorized screen radio in mine. Had I done that I would most likely totally love it. But at the same time I am good with the route I went. Just enough capability for me without changing the truck up too much.

Sorry @mattressking for cluttering up your thread. Carry on. Truck looks great!!!

I will be doing the swap on @Str8Razor 60 already have an fj62 here but missing the dash pad going to be ordering that really soon before they vanish thanks @mattressking for pushing my buddy off the fence i prefer the 62 dash but that is what i drive plus being into car audio for so long and having a double din radio in almost every vehicle i have had i may be just bias lol..

@mattressking, As always Nate, your thread is a wealth of info. I need to keep my eye on it as I’m digging the extras you’ve offered up. And that dash is nice, almost too nice. I always find seeing those dash screens look too modern and uppity for our old trucks. Kinda like putting a tutu on an elephant or makeup on a pig.
Hey what did you ever do w/ that headlight washer reservoir I gave you? You’d mentioned getting new ones made if it wasn’t too pricey.
Felicity

Totally understand! My goal was to utilize the new dash parts. have a double din opening for phone mirroring (which is excellent) and better audio, and still retain all original parts. It couldn’t have been a better upgrade. I’m in this truck constantly so it’s nice to have some modern features to cater to my desires. I’m a bit of an uppity up on occasion.

the bottle went to a friend actually! Pricing was over 10k and didn’t have the desire to put that forward :( I decided to ditch the washer stuff ultimately.

Exactly. Lots of air cooled guys talk about not wanting fancy audio and listen only to engine....well they don’t drive 6 hours or more at a time so the charm disappears. 2F definitely doesn’t have any exciting audible charm :) Maybe with a 1HD I’ll turn music down more.

While out at the Four Seasons for NYE, my valet surprised me, left a little note that choke needs to be pulled when started. I was impressed!

I just got in my 81110-60P70 headlamp assembly yesterday. What a complete kit and great price under $60 shipped. Gonna tear into it this weekend. Any bugs I need to watch out for? I have an '84 FJ60. Thanks and great thread. Mark

Nope! Just make sure you ground the negative lead to battery. Curious to hear if your bright indicator works after you install, hearing mixed results.

Get the 70 series vents for the middle! You get the full adjustability. :) Its a straight and easy swap.

@red66toy @mattressking what’s the number and source for the 70 series vents? I’ve had mismatch vents I swapped in my 62 for years, would like to clean that up.
Do you have any close up shots of them?.....there’s a couple different types out there.

Direct bolt on. I did a little hunting to get exactly what I wanted. There's a few options out there but I went with Works Bell for the hub then contact Works Bell Japan for a longer boot as the one that comes with the hub is a little short for my taste on the 60 column. A couple emails and they shipped me their longest boot and did exactly what I wanted. Not exactly cheap for it all. Probably about $130 for the hub assembly and about $200-$250 for the wheel used. New is about $330 for the wood wheel.

If you want to go that route, let me know and I'll tell you the specifics.

What's the story on the Nardi wheel? Very classy looking. Take any special work to make it work on the 60 column? Thanks

Not the case with my junk but none the less I love my LS sound but the double din is just so functional.... @tmxmotorsports is gonna make it all work with his magic...can't wait... thanks for the insentive and insight!!

Thought I'd chime in here with another data point. I just swapped this headlight setup into a 60 and the bright indicator works on mine.

Really enjoying this thread. Inspiration for a guy who just acquired his first 60
