I have yet to fill it with coolant, so I'm hoping it seals okay. But this is the one I got.

The gates 34198 thermostat did not work with my early 5.3 water pump, it is my understanding it will work on later pumps but I didn't want to spend the money to change mine. I will try to figure out which one I wound up with as it's not on my spreadsheet. Again none of this has been "tested" yet as I am still in assembly mode.

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. I'm definitely digging deep to keep motivated as doing the swap and the body the same time is a bit overwhelming.

Currently working on the stainless steel exhaust, and going to reinstall the cage and start mocking up the interior to figure out fuel pump and line placement

Thermostat for the Amazon housing and old style 5.3 WP...

Mr gasket 6368 purchased from summit racing.

I can't guarantee this will work, the spring loaded extension that covers the outlet to the heater seems longer than it needs to be (making the whole thermostat thicker and you have to compress it to get the thermostat housing on) but I tested the thermostat in boiling water and that part never seems to move so it shouldn't matter....??
I'll find out.

Very nice work! You’ll love the LS.

Happy 4th

Once it was running, I couldn't resist taking her out for a spin... No interior, sitting on a milk crate, with temporary wiring and jumpers with alligator clips and no front sheet metal and a large leaf blower tube for an intake lol.

Holy cow this thing hauls butt.

Motivation is high, got the front seats in, fenders and front sheetmetal back on yesterday, that let me permanently route and mount more of the underhood wiring.

I still have to fab up an intake and figure out what air filter system I want to use, and where to put it... And paint the hood and windshield frame and reinstall, lastly and low priority do rust repair and paint the tailgate...

Congratulations getting it on the road! What kind of rpm was it doing at 97 mph? I don’t have the huevos to try that but think mine runs at 2100 rpm at 70 with the 4L60e, and that’s with 33’s. Such a great feeling, happy for you.
That 5.3 is a great motor. Have fun with it.

Thank you. I wasn't tracking RPM and I was barely looking at the speedo as my attention was completely focused on managing the car. It was definitely requiring more than the normal amount of attention.
I've been driving it around town for the last couple of weeks with no windshield or hood and it's been fine running great and no leaks or hiccups. I'll go do some highway runs with the torque app and see what kind of RPMs I get. Stock axles, h42 and 33 x 1050 BFGs

Looking good and congratulations on reaching a milestone! Getting it running, moving and stopping is so satisfying.

I'm a little behind you on my project and a 2F swap differs greatly from an LS one but looking forward to when I also can take the 40 over Donner Pass again. With the performance you are seeing you might want to consider the Black Rock for your speed test?

Cheers!

Hell no lol.
I've been on the playa with feet, bicycles, motos and cars.
Anything I care about gets completely disassembled and rebuilt after a playa visit, so much corrosive alkali.
I wouldn't do it to this new build.

I also want to add I completely jinxed myself with the "great, no issues, no leaks" claim.

Came home today from an errand, smelled bit of burning oil while driving but didn't think much of it as it passed.
Got home and parked on my brand spanking new asphalt driveway, wife came out to me later and said hey there's a puddle under the 40.

Fuuu

Take a quick look at it, there's oil coming from the top rear of the engine.

I know exactly what it is.

Idiot.

The stock LS truck oil pressure sender had the plastic connector section at the top broken off when I got the engine, I figured it was sealed and just lost the electronic portion so I installed it even though I wasn't going to use it.

Turns out it blew apart and oil is coming up through the body of it and soaked some oil down the sides of the engine and the bellhousing.

Cleaned up the oil, pulled the sender, luckily it was steel, so I just welded the inlet passage closed and reinstalled it. No more leak.

Why I didn't do that when I installed it, I don't know.

Lost .5 L of oil and made a small mess

what are you using for the Toyota oil pressure gauge? That's a sign to install one of my oil pressure sensor adapters :)

Oh yeah forgot about that, guess my rig wasn't in good enough shape back when I used to go out there to notice any ill effects. I can see why you might not want to get that stuff on your 40.
