I've got a trailer you can use if you need to transport it w/out the 40.
I am hoping they can weld it bolted in my 40 so it minimizes warping. I am also a little leery of my tack welds holding it in place for a trip across town strapped down on a trailer. Maybe I am overthinking it, but I just don’t wan’t to go to bolt it in and have it not line up. Thanks for the offer!

I have been pretty bad about updating this thread. I have mostly been prepping for painting the rear quarter panels and tailgate. I welded up the roll cage and got it powdercoated. Also powdered the 4 plus running boards. Today I was prepping the cowl seam under the windshield for seam sealer. I decided I wanted to get some paint on it before the sealer so I put the windshield down to remove the rubber seal to keep paint off it. Was super happy to see it was in pristine shape under there. Given that floors had all rusted out on this thing I was prepared for it to be fairly bad. Pics are after I cleaned it up with some lysol wipes.

Tonight I got some paint on the rear quarters. I am just using rust oleum in cans. I still need to mask it off and shoot the rear cross member. I needed to get some paint on the body lip though so I couldn’t really mask it off when I was spraying the white.

Sorry about the pic quality. My phone camera lens was pretty dirty and I didn’t realize it.

My neighbor and his son came over and helped me get the roll bar installed. Over the weekend I got the rear harness put back in. First time it’s had rear marker lights since the PO covered the rear corners with sheet metal. I also got the rear cross member coated in black again and put the taillights in. Bolted on the 4plus running board sliders as well.

Plugging away at some of the tedious stuff. Cleaned up the tailgate hardware and got it painted. Seam sealed the cowl. Seam sealing sucks. It dries really fast. You need to work it quickly or it will not be smooth. It sticks to everything and you can’t wipe it off easily. I did find that mineral spirits cleaned it up well though. Added the bumperettes, light guards, and hitch. Removed a leaf from the front and rear springs to improve the shackle angle and ride. Also put some shims in while I was at it.

Tell me about your side steps/running boards. Why did you go with those, and where did you get them? Sorry if it was previously addressed. Thanks!

It is a besttop jeep seat. Same thing cool cruisers sells but i bought it directly.

And how about that rear floor mat? Looks original texture.
It’s from Relik Garage. Not as authentic as the mat from city racer but i bought it before city racer had his and it was less money because for the price it includes the rear piece.

I do have a few details on them earlier in the build. They are heavy enough to use as rock sliders and made by 4+ @lcwizard . I went with them because I plan to wheel this 40 and wanted the protection they provide. Also the PO cut off my lower rockers and tossed the running boards so I had to come up with something.

The heat right now can't help the seam sealing. Cure time is probably almost instant. Can you dip your finger in mineral spirits to help smooth it if it's starting to cure while your tooling it?

Are you leaving the seam sealer gray?

No, I painted it yesterday I just haven’t taken any pics yet. Working on the hood now.

Just got through this thread front to back off & on reading....i saw I had been here before and recognize your avatar photo, but I had never seen the thread start to finish. Great work and persistence. Is the original paint code 031 on your 40? What Rustoleum aerosol can color are you using? It appears to be a near perfect match. I have some hardtop sides to try and match for my 031 1980 original paint 40.

Look forward to you getting to the finish line and getting to enjoy this thing.

Thanks for the compliment. It’s gloss canvas white. Unfortunately only available in spray cans. It’s a fairly good match. I ordered a license plate, getting close!

So I went down a rabbit hole. In someone’s thread I saw smaller steering wheel options so I started looking and found a mini truck wheel that I liked. It has 3 spokes and horn buttons as well as the same toyota symbol as the 40 wheel. Spent the last couple days refurbing it and making it work with the 40. I had to trim about 1/4” off the plastic part that mates to the column. The turn signal cancel pins don’t exist on the mini truck wheel instead it has some larger diameter holes that mate to a plastic piece. I welded up those holes and drilled some new holes to accept the cruiser roll pins. It was in a bit rough shape so I sanded the plastic part with a headlight refinishing kit. I also wrapped the steering wheel in leather. I am pretty happy with it. My turn signal switch was broken so I replaced that at the same time (I have had the switch for a while).
