Well, for what's it worth, I ended up buying a regular NAPA HD battery due to budget considerations.
So far, so good.

I figured out the Sears/Odyssey thing by chance. I originally bought the Die Hard Platinum Marine due to customer loyalty. I have killed lesser batteries while winching and had been stranded before; but the Die Hard Golds have never let me down. So when the Platinums came out I knew that was what I was going to. I came across Odyssey while researching dual battery setups. and recognized the construction to be similar, if not exact, to the Sears model I just bought. :hmm: So after some digging on the net, I confirmed that they were indeed the same battery. :)

The pics show the same construction, handle, etc. The posts are different as the pic is a normal PC2150 battery. The Sears is the same as Odyssey 31M-PC2150, posts and all. I am sure the other models all have the same relationships. Cool, I think this is my first valuable contribution to MUD.

I plan on using the battery in a National Luna Power Pack. This would allow me to put the power pack, fridge, inverter, and multi-mount winch in any of my three trucks.

So, HJ-45.

Which Die Hard Platinum did you buy? (Sears Part Number or name would be great!)

Did you have to modify either harness? Make a new battery tray?

Thanks for the scoop!

Looks like the standard Group 34 battery costs $189.99.

The standard Die Hard Platinum battery are all $190. The regular Die Hard Platinums are also probably equivalent to other Odyssey models, but I haven't researched that for sure or determined equivalency for anything other than Odyssey 2150 (DH Platinum Marine).

I have had an optima red top in my 40 for 8 years now. (knock on wood). Before that I had Die Hard golds which would only go about 2 years before they would go bad. I have also had a red top optima on my 60 for 4 years, no problems. When I went to get a battery for my new to me 80 I ended up going with the new Die Hard platinum. Mostly because of the fact that I had no money, but I had a Sears Card, and I needed it then. But I really like it because I didn't have to modify any mounts or cables to make it fit right. With the optima's I had to pull extra slack out of the batt cables and space the batt up so it would cinch down tightly. The next battery I would buy would probably be another Die Hard platinum. And now that I have read from the previous posts that this is very similar to the Oddyssey's I am very pleased with my choice.

COSTCO $65, come with a free 3 yr. replacement

In a nutshell the problems with the Optimas are fairly common in the car audio forums due basically to operation outside of their "sweet spot" or where they like to be in terms of DOD and recharging. I would be very curious to see what a 1-2min 6000lb pull on a pair of redtops or yellowtops leaves their voltage at when finished. And what their Cranking amps(not cold cranking amps) at 1min or 2min are. This might start to hone in on what the ideal operating sweet spot the optimas perform in.

You can't compare the red top with the yellow top.

We had very bad experience with the yellow top for winching. I managed to prolong my last yellow top life by using it only for low amp, long time discharge like feeding my 12V refrigerator and carefully monitoring it's voltage until it reachs 10.5V and then changing to my Delco deep cycle marine battery. So far it it's up to 4 1/2 years old versus the 2 years our friends could get from it. The Delcos are more up to winching but also doesn't last more then 2 years.

Regarding the red top if used only as a LSI or light, starting and ignition batt, our friends who keep it only for this purpose have reported about 4 years life in our hot weather.

Anyhow it's clear for me, I will not purchase any Optima again no matter if it's D31 or else, period.

well, dont know if this will help or not. i went to sears this morning and bought a platinum series die hard. was a group 34. brought it home, fits ok, only 1 problem. the posts are in the front and not the back. my battery cables are all stock, so if you have slightly longer cables, it should work ok for you. took it back and asked if they had a battery with the posts in the back, they said no as this was a new line of battery for them. he did try to sell me the older style die hard, but i passed on that. just my .02 for today.

Best Battery= The Panasonic battery that came with the 80 from the factory.

Unfortunately you can't get them in this country, the average lifetime of that battery is 7 years.

My sister in law managed to get 10 years from her Panasonic.

Her secret: she never, never let a full battery discharge, or requiring jumper cables to start her vehicle.

CB draining it after 20 minutes is outrageous !!!! the battery was quite ill.

As you noticed by my other posts I am not a Optima fan anymore, but it's important you realize that any standard, non deep cycle, battery will never came back to it's 100 % charging capacity if let all depleted, that's a death certificate specially if it happen often.

If you are going to replace it with another non deep cycle, do your best to avoid any discharge deep enough to require jump start.

Another shout out for the Exide Orbital deep cyccle marine (carried by Napa). Sat in my shed of a year. Was a little weak when hooked up, but took a charge like new.

Best battery = Odyssey.

ken

Kick @#$%. Mine is the biggest they offered 6-7yr back. I have had it so long I can't even recall. Absolutely no issues. Truck has sat before for months unrun at a time. Bam, starts right up.

No reason to buy anything else IMO.

Sears DieHard Platinum series. Odyssey in sheep's clothing. For a $100-$150 less than you will pay for the Odyssey.

FYI:

This is a press release another mud brother found...

Ensersys is the maker of Odyssey so this will make more sense.

Here is the press release for Sears/Enersys.
EnerSys Signs Multi-Year Contract to Provide Sears Holdings With Long-Life DieHard(R) Platinum BatteriesREADING, Pa. and HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., Feb. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- EnerSys (NYSE: ENS), the world's largest manufacturer, marketer and distributor of industrial batteries, today announced it has signed a multi- year contract with Sears Holdings (Nasdaq: SHLD) to manufacture and supply Sears with a newly categorized DieHard Platinum branded battery for aftermarket automotive and marine applications. DieHard is America's most preferred automotive battery, among those stating a preference.
Beginning in March, 2007, Sears Auto Centers will be the exclusive distribution channel for DieHard Platinum batteries. "By working with EnerSys on the new DieHard Platinum battery, we continue the legacy of innovation that was established with the original DieHard battery 40 years ago," said Rick Sawyer, vice president/general merchandise manager of Sears Auto Centers. "We're confident this new battery will live up to the DieHard brand name and that users will be pleased with its performance. These premium-grade batteries are designed for a longer life than traditional batteries, offer increased levels of safe operation, can withstand extreme heat and cold, and are durable for consumer automotive/marine applications. The DieHard Platinum battery will offer proven vibration resistance to the consumer market.

They have a valve-regulated design that allows them to be installed in any orientation, except inverted, without spilling and the U.S. Department of Transportation has classified them as non- spillable for safe shipping.

I've had mixed results with Optima. I had a red top that lasted about 5 years. Good battery up until the end. The battery failure finally pushed me to finish my dual battery setup. So went with a yellow top as the primary and a new red top as the backup. No winch. The cruiser is not a daily driver anymore due to price of gas. After about 6 month of intermitent use the yellow top to started to flake. I took it back to Costco and am now running the blue top as a primary without any issues so far. I wanted to go with dual red tops but felt I needed a deep cycle primary with the aftermarket stereo, amp, gps, rear view mirror, & inverter. Hopefully the blue top will perform better. At Costco the blue top has full replacement up to 18 months vs 12 months for the yellow top.
