Hey All. I'm going to have my seatbelts re-webbed soon at Seatbelt Planet. I have a 1989 FJ62. All the threads I read are about converting 60's to the retractable seatbelts from 62's. I'm considering 2 other options.

Option 1: Converting everything in the rear to lap belts.
Option 2: Converting the rear retractable shoulder belts to non-retractable belts.

There are a few reasons why. I really don't have anyone in the back on a regular basis. The shoulder belts consistently get caught on the seat when I'm moving it up or down. Those freaking trim pieces are missing and it drives me nuts. Would prefer to just get 60 series cargo covers and not have the shoulder harnesses.

My Questions:
  • Can I convert my 62 to lap belts easily?
  • Has anyone installed the non-retractable shoulder belts? Have pics?
Thanks in advance. If there is already a thread on this, please let me know.

Converting to lap belts in the rear just requires you to get a lap belt. You will then just use the two lower mounts and ignore the upper one.

As for non retractable shoulder belts…I am sure you could have something custoM made but I don’t see what the point would be over the retractable ones

88 62's only had rear lap belts, 3 point started in 89
to get correct color, you would need 87 or 88 rear belts, same with rear panels and rim

fixed 3 point will still get in your way

ever think of retro fitting a bracket to hold the belt out of the way? I'm thinking 3rd row from a 100 series, it has a piece to put the belt in and it keeps it tight against the inside of the body

I have fixed 3 point in the bench seat currently and I bought retractable ones I am going to install soon. The fixed ones are a pain to deal with.

Sounds like lap belts are going to be the right play in my situation. The fixed shoulder belts are going to be the same problem. I'm having the fronts re-webbed, so can get same color from Seatbelt Planet. Thanks for the insights all!

Can you post a pic of the fixed 3-point belts? I've searched like crazy and the only real picture I can find is a thumbnail from the SOR website.

Here are my fixed rear seat belts 3 point. The shoulder belt is fixed and you adjust by lengthening it or shortening it. The lap belts retract. The entire thing is a pain and I already bought fully retractable shoulder belts to replace these with. I also found the unicorn trim piece to cover the retractable shoulder belt.

I am replacing those with new fully retractable front and rear belts. The trim piece covers it. The belts I got at seatbelt planet. The trim pieces I got from a fellow forum member from Australia (he has more, FJ40GURU).

The SKU I have for rear from seatbelt planet is; 50378-V02 ($333.95)
The SKU I have for the front is; 50351-V02 ($428.95). I went with Charcoal for color.

I have plans to do the same thing, but finding those trim pieces in brown seems close to impossible (not going to pay the $600/pr some people are asking). Backup plan is to find blue/gray ones and spray paint them.

Then there's the whole issue of headrests. I've been looking around for somebody selling a 62 seat with junk upholstery who's willing to cut out the internal headrest holders. I'd remove the fabric, weld those into my 60 seat, the put the fabric back. A set of 60 front seat headrests will pop right in.

The trim pieces are hard to come by. I did end up spray painting mine to make them look new with SEMA paint in gray. They look brand new now. Also my rear seat did not have headrests. TORFAB welded the brackets needed for them and added them. They were also the ones who originally put in the stationary 3 point seat belt all about 10-15 years ago. After having kids and friends complain about the stationary pain in the ass belts trying to get them to work for different body shapes I am modernizing them for safety.

I have an 83 FJ 60, I got the nonretractable seatbelts from Seatbelt Planet and installed, nothing on mine retracts lap or shoulder so they kind just hang there when nobody in backseat. But was super easy install and made wife happier about having kids back there.

It took me a lot of time searching till I found a seat back from a 62 to swap in, I stripped the fabric off it cleaned it up and put my 60’s fabric on the new seat back, it bolted right in no fitting issues. My kids actually noticed the difference in seats because the old 60 seat back springs were very worn out and sunken in, the 62 seat back is molded foam and much stiffer and they said more comfortable. Moved the headrests from front to back seats and got some inexpensive movie player ones for front seats. Little entertainment for the kids while driving go a long ways some time.

Thanks for sharing. Do they bounce around?

I try to remember to buckle them when nobody back there, then tuck the lap portion into the seat. If I do that they are pretty stable and quiet.
