Last night I pulled off the clogged up original carb and installed a spare Trollhole carb from my parts stash. The idea is to run the truck around the neighborhood and slowly sort out the things that need attention. So far so good. The truck cranks up and runs just fine. However, there is a huuuuge exhaust leak between the head and the manifold. I let the truck idle for about five minutes and did an oil change. According to the magic marker on the old filter, the oil was changed about 4000 miles ago in 2003! It was due.


A few quick observations from last night's fun. It looks like I have a burned out headlight. The original Kioto headlight is still burning bright. The Sylvania replacement on the other side is not working. My cluster lights are not working but all the gauges seem to be working fine. The wire to the temp sending unit was broken, so I fixed that and the temp gauge now moves as it should. Once I changed the oil, the oil pressure gauge was reading just a bit to the right of center at idle. That seems good. DS drum brake is dragging a little bit (bell cranks are crudded up). I'm sure I will find much more. I really enjoy this part of bringing an old truck back to life.

Yeah, I came in the house last night smelling like exhaust from leaning into the engine bay while it was running. Wife sent me straight to the shower. The PO removed the muffler, so the truck is straight-piped except for the cat. I'll have to put a muffler on it but, honestly, it's not ridiculously loud. I guess the cat takes alot of the noise away. The majority of what you hear in the video is that manifold leak. I dread dealing with that. I had something similar on my 60 and it turned out to be a job that grew bigger and bigger as mission creep set in.
 
Question for those in the know: Are the late 40's pretty good on the road with the 3.70 gears and factory sized tires, or do they benefit from 33" rubber overdrive like the earlier ones? The reason I ask is this...See this picture?

Notice how the PS front tire is an almost flat 20-y/o Cooper? Notice the lift under the truck? When the PO backed the truck out of the building, the PS front tire hit the lift and popped. He was nice enough to replace it with a brand new 30x9.50 BFG KO2 (despite the white letter out fail).

I've got to replace the other dry-rotted Coopers. I'm trying to decide if I want to stay with the small 30's and just redo the worn out spring bushings or do I bump up to 33's and do a 2.5" lift? I kind-of want to keep this one stock. I have other more capable trail trucks. My other 40 is on 35's. My 80 is on 315's. This one won't see much trail use but 33's and a little lift sure do look "right" on a 40. I'm really torn, and I need to make a decision on tires before I can really start driving this thing on the road. Opinions?

Tire sizes. I acquired a '68 earlier in November. It had worn 31" tires on it. There's definitely a lift on the truck. Here's the before and after photos showing how it sits with 33" now.

tall skinnys on the 40. 33x10.50's look pretty right on a 40. Not to mention, the BFG's I've owned all run small.

I have 33's and the stock 3.70 diffs on my 1980 and really like the rubber overdrive; it will go 65 mph pretty comfortably at ~2600 rpm in 4th gear. But I do have an H41 transmission, which has a much lower 1st gear than the stock (for U.S.) H42.

33x10.5 KO2 is the best looking tire on a 40 in my humble opinion.

Looks aside you should get by fine with 30s. I do alright with 31s and 4.10s. I figure a 3B in 5th is about as happy as a 2f in 4th :D

I’d just go with the 31’s and just redo the spring bushings. Plenty of bushing options out there.
 
To me, 31’s kind-of say, “I wish I could have gone bigger but this is what I settled for.” It’s going to have to be factory size (well...close enough) 30’s or straight to 33’s. Nothing in between.

Not so ‘Dusty’ anymore. That polished up amazingly.

I’m not one to advocate flipping but I’m guessing that work easily added 5k to the trucks market value!
