Love the salmon flies....

Here's my son throwing salmon flies to the waiting giant cutthroat at LaHardy rapids in Yellowstone during this year’s hatch.

We stopped there 3 days in a row to “feed the fish”.

So the story behind the work on the 40 yesterday.


After adding all the steel back that was eaten away by the rust monster, installing the rear swing out beer cooler carrier, the fold and tumble in the back and the weight of 2 teenage kids, I had overloaded the rear leaf springs.

I went with the quick fix a few months ago of adding longer shackles, well that turned out to be a disaster waiting to happen. I created a few other problems by changing the geometry of the driveline, it looked good though.

So after talking with @orangefj45 on the phone he walked me back to what the problem really was, and more importantly how to fix it. Correctly.

After buying the new house, moving (still unpacking), driving across the US to Maryland for 2 weeks, and working every day, I didn't have much time to spare to work on the 40. Well after beating up on the 4Runner on Sunday my wife has had enough of me using that to explore the mountains, sweet, now I can fix my 40 without hearing any grief. (New tires coming for the 4Runner)

Yesterday I pulled both leaf springs from the rear and installed a new add-a-leaf from Skyjacker, the install went about as expected, the hardest part was lining the pin back up into the hole on the spring perch on the rear axle. Other than that it was straight forward.

So far the shackle angle looks a 100X better, loaded the kids in the back and it still looks great, rides about the same as it always has, and doesn't bottom out on the frame when loaded. I plan on loading it up this weekend and going fishing for a full day, food, beer, ice, tools, gear, chairs, family, the whole nine yards. Time to test it out.


I want to thank Georg for not trying to sell me parts, instead he took the time to gather info from me and told me how to fix my problems the right way. Thanks again.



On a side note, twice in the last week my rig just up and died, both times while driving. Fuel in the sight glass was good both times. I think I may have had a loose connection on a dizzy wire, I crimped the connector a little and scuffed up the copper. So far so good.

Georg has never steered me wrong. It gets old reading about guys having problems with the bigger vendors who have nice websites or who can source NOS parts from Columbia for dirt cheap..... Georg and a small handfull of other Mud vendors could put on a clinic on the right way to treat their customers, no matter what size their order is.

Glad to see your rig sitting right again. Keep posting pics.

I picked the AAL up from Summit Racing, PN# SJA-FLL40R

Funny thing, when I called Skyjacker they claimed they did not make an AAL for the 4" lift for a FJ40, nor could I find them on their website. I found them on Summits website, called and confirmed the fit for a FJ40 and the 4" Skyjacker lift. Ordered them from Summit and they drop shipped from Skyjacker in Louisiana.

That is a Skyjacker specific part, I do not know if it will work for other applications.

Had the same problem with my latches - Just take them off and weld the washer on the pivot pin on back of the latch. Will tighten it up reaal nicee!
