@FJmaine have you actually put your tank in the tub and seen how well the fuel tank cover fits over the top? For me, it fit enough to bolt it down on 3 of the 4 sides. I ended up having to trim off the passenger side tab of the tank cover because it didn’t reach the door jam ledge. Annoying but not the end of the world.

On a side note, modify the OEM Tran tunnel to fit the Aqualu. You’ll thank me later.

Right now, I have to use the 9/16" mounts that came with the Aqualu tub on top of the Daystar body mounts in order to have clearance over the cross bar. I placed the tank in to see how it fits and it rocks on some thing. I haven't dug into it too far to see what the interference is yet, but I figure that it will clear everything when I put some padding under the tank.

I measured the vertical face of the tank well and got 2 3/8".

The tank I have right now is from a late 60's FJ40. It doesn't work with the tank cover that I have. I may have to try to source a new tank...

Glad to see this thread percolate back into the batting order. 😎

We’re in the slow process of getting my ‘78 Fj40 with an aluminum tub back on the road (slow because of a current ‘94 Fzj80 restoration and maintenance on an ‘85 Hj60 and ‘75 Fj40). I found an aluminum tub on the neighboring island of Kauai from a guy who just wanted it gone after being on marketplace for a year. We didn’t need it at the time, but for the price, figured we could use it sometime in the future.
Here it is on its way to Oahu after sitting in a shed the last 10 years.

Not long after acquiring the tub, a perfect candidate for the aluminum tub was found on the westside of my island in an old chicken barn. It was a ‘78 Fj40 in pieces with a rusted out rear sill, floorboards and cut rear wheel well openings.

Other then the severely rotted tub, the rest of the body and disassembled parts were in pretty good shape and cleaned up nice.

After a few bodymount bolts and some drilled out spot welds where the tub meets the lower dash floorboards, the rotted tub was lifted off, revealing a frame that was in surprisingly great shape, with possibly some of the original factory black frame paint still on there with some manageable surface rust.

Was even more pleased with the condition after a good pressure wash of the frame and remaining body. With the aluminum tub ready to mount, the time had come for it to meet its new frame. Cont…..

The aluminum tub was a very good fit, all mounting bolt holes lined up and was a breeze to install with an engine hoist.

What’s really nice is the freed up garage space from all the body panels, parts, and doors that were taking up space that are now on the new 40.

This will be a slow build, especially with one cruiser build ahead of it, but it will be fun as it starts to develop.

Aqualu restoration finished 2013 by FJ40jim and myself. Full tub, windshield frame, Aqualu's early fenders, bib, aprons, and interchangeable tailgate to use with soft top. The only steel body parts are the 4 doors and hood.
