Hey mud!

I’m looking at picking up a solid little 40 series project. It currently has a 60 series engine, transmission, and transfer case bolted up. Nothing has been connected, the drivetrain is just sitting in it.

Is is a favorable combo to keep in the 40? Or should I plan on pulling that drivetrain, selling it, and dropping in a 40 series 2F and split case from a later model 40? I do intend to add power steering to this truck, so is it advantageous to just keep the 60 stuff sitting there since it comes with power steering pump and other attributes, including a better head.

Thanks for any advice!

There are just little things (maybe I'm making a big deal mentally about it) like parking brake. The 60 used a parking brake system based on the rear drums, while the 40 used a parking brake on the back of the transfer case. If I am running a 60 drivetrain, I will need to get a parking brake conversion kit to attach to the rear drums, right?

The only diff correct me if I am wrong is that all of the 60's had a split xfer
all 81+ model year Landcruiser had a split case transfer either 40 or 60 series
if it is early 60 stuff, it would be the same as 81-83 40 series stuff, trans shifter might be in the wrong place depending on which top they used on the trans
if it is later 85+ it would have the extension on the trans

there is the park brake option for the splitcase transfer

The parking brake will work on the split transfer case.
When I ordered mine I had the parking brake included.

Later 2fs had wider crank bearings.

5/85+ 60 series had 3F bellhousing in the US market. Those rotated the transmission clock wise. Same time the dummy space was added so the transmission length matched the H55F five. Not something you want in an FJ40 running a 2F. How easy a four speed will fit depends on the year of the FJ40. Anything can be made to fit. I added a four speed in my 68 over thirty years ago. Already switched 74 buckets seats. If I had used a 60 series four speed and still have the factory 40/60 bench shifting would have been awkward.

That’s awesome! So I can obtain a rear parking brake provision like this and install it on the back of a 60 transfer case?
Yes.
When I converted the FJ60 rear axle to full floater I did not want D-rotors and just used front axle disc brakes, hubs and spindles. Did not what to have any brake drums other than the parking brake.

I also am moving the parking brake lever to the floor and got the cable from OZ for the brake and was not expensive like $25.00 with shipping.

Reach out to Georg and he will get you set up the right parts unless you have the 4 speed parts for the brake.

Ok, good deal. I like a parking brake on the back of the transfer case, for simplicity.

I need to get this truck first and then dig in

When I did the search for the brake cable I got found it on Ebay for a FJ45. Getting the lever and bucket was a little harder but finally got the right parts.

I did not like banging my knee cap on the umbrella lever under the dash.

What was the extra cost of adding the hand brake to the split transfer case? These weren't cheap when I helped a member in Australia sell a few.

I don't remember have to ask Georg.

79-80 fj40 cable is floor lever to drum on the t-case too

Drum, correct output shaft, bearing reatiner are about $1200 retail. Need a good used backing plate which isn't availabe new (yet)
