I hooked mine up through the glow system using both glow circuits as you need continues power to the VSV from memory. I get a buzz from under the dash when starting but been fine over the last 2 years with daily driving. The reason I went this way is because I like the shut down with the stock system with low oil pressure etc.

I know this should be simple, but I'd really like to get it right the first time. I'd like to be using the existing wires with the edic system.

I've found your VSV with 2h Wiring" - just to clarify:

I'm going to join the yellow + green wire BEFORE the edic relay, then run those to the VSV switch.

Then take the blue wire running from the oil pressure switch and run it to the other side of the vsv.

Simple as that? Has that been working good for ya?
Thanks again for all your help!

EDIT: It was that simple.

Yellow and green need to jump together then up into one side of the vacuum switch.
Blue goes to the other side.

Got everything sorted, just a few things left including Pyrometer and Boost gauge install.

Driving the Troopy with the 12ht is night and day difference, highly recommended swap. It's now peppy around town, and has no issue keeping up on the highway. Very stoked!

Removed almost every vacuum line. Every one of these relate to idle speed or "idle up when AC is on" but I have a manual throttle control so I wouldn't need any of that any. Just ran some fresh vacuum hoses to the VSV so the truck will shut down, and plumbed it in to the stock 2h alternator vacuum system.

VSV wiring was easy thanks to OZcruiser, cheers!

Using stock EDIC wiring

Yellow/Green to one end
Blue to the other

Buddy got to try out his new Tig welder to make the intake work. Kept it simple on the intake piping, just one cut and weld.

Lastly, I installed a couple gauges. I wanted something small and period correct for the interior. I picked Auber Instruments 1813 Digital gauges. Huge fan so far, love the 80s look.

Now to take some trips!

Been driving the truck for the last few months. It has been AMAZING. Driving over mountain passes is a dream now, I can stay in 5th almost completely. I do get into 4th just a few times to bring EGTs down a bit.

So far no oil leaks or smoking, and tons of power. I'm leaving it stock at 8psi without an intercooler because 1. it's plenty of power 2. I can't really fit an intercooler.

Looks good! I dig the Trakka roof, maybe even more-so than the Alu-Cab.

How's the rear door holding up with that big meaty tire? Any sagging hinges or whatnot?

What gears is your truck running in the diffs?

Cheers

Pretty sure just stock 4.11

First gear is almost useless, in fact I start in second almost anytime if I'm even barely rolling. I'm usually running about 110kmph (65-70mph) on the highway at 2200-2400rpm. Been getting 20-22 miles per gallon too before figuring the difference for bigger tires, that's the best part.

Thanks! I love the way the Trakka top looks, Alu-cab looks out of place and bulky. That being said Alu-cab definitely has a better living space and construction. Aluminum > Fiberglass.

I use the backdoor probably 5 times a day, and it seems ok. I'm sure it's not great for it but I don't really care. I'll buy new hinges and repair if they ever fail. My alternatives for having a spare aren't ideal. I would hate to have to open a swing out every time I wanted into the back(or pay for it) and hood/roof options are a no go for my setup.

Finally got to repairing the pop-top. The canvas had seen better days, and Trakka did some questionable things in the 90s. The ribs in the fiberglass top meant to strengthen were made of flimsy plywood with (now almost nonexistant) foam between the fiber and wood. The edges were cut sharp as well so they would cut into the headliner. I filled the supports with new wood and re-fiberglassed them with a smooth edge.

A few hours later I was happy with the shape and repairs to the edges, so I installed a new headliner.

By now the new canvas had come back from the upholstery shop. I had replaced the old fabric with Cordura 500 canvas. Lightweight and breathable, but seems to be completely waterproof. Now affixed to the top with extremely heavy duty velcro as apposed to wood nails as trakka had originally designed. Everything about the new setup I would like to be easily removable in case of repair.

BUT

I had dropped off the old canvas with the upholstery shop with instructions to copy it exactly, but add 6" of length to the top. I had longer and stronger gas struts along with plan to lengthen the torsion bar to account for the added height, but after few hours of trying to figure out why my
geometry was wrong, it turns out the fabric was cut too short! My old fabric was 100" long, the new fabric 96". Must have had a new guy doing the measuring. Hahahaha

That sucked but I'm actually happy, because I'd like to change the entire design. Instead of a flat top, I'm going to transition to a slightly angled setup. It should give more headroom where we need it, and help in heavy weather. I think it looks a lot better as well. The angle reminds me of certain hardshell tents, specifically those from James Baroud.

New fabric should be here in a few days and this Saturday we're going to try again. I'll be personally helping with measuring this time!

In good news, I picked up a set of Recaro seats. I kid you not, I've been looking for a set of Recaro "Spectrum" seats for about 10 years now. I'm a Recaro nerd and these have been my personal holy grail set. I've never found a set under $1500, so when these came up for $400 I had to jump on them. They are from 1978 and were about $2000 a piece back then. They might be a little overkill for the troopy, but I love the 70s/80s vibe. They aren't as "lazy boy" feeling as the stock troopy seats, but I find after a long drive my back is happier. As is my heart.

Also got out camping a bit as well. Before the tent came off.

Right on. Power often makes up for gearing and vise versa. Just look at what a Unimog can do with 90hp, it’s all about gearing.

Hey just an FYI, ALL Toyota 5spds don’t like any load in 5th. The worst would be towing in 5th but anything that puts a load on 5th is bad. The gear is not designed for it and eventually it will kill 5th and or the trans.

The same goes for other 5spds as well like the NV4500.

Cheers

Well crap, I do almost all my drag racing in 5th gear.

Nice troopy, I think I see you (or someone's) around town quite a bit. We're planning on getting a 70 series hopefully before the end of the year, cant decide between troop carrier or 73/74.

Have you had yours on any of the more difficult local trails? Does the added height make you feel any less stable?

I've taken it on some pretty difficult trails. It doesn't seem unstable or top heavy, my only complaint is the fiberglass top is creaky if you are getting flexed out.

Swing by the shop some time if you want to test drive it. www.thefitgarage.com

Love how the pop top turned out, especially compared to looks of the version that has the whole thing going straight up and compared to the functionality of the clamshell. Is it any more difficult to get stowed away in the new configuration?

Currently hanging out in it as I type this out, and there seems like twice the room. We can actually hang out up top without feeling like we are in a HVAC pipe or something hahaha.
Stowing it away is the same as before, but I have found the fabric around the outside pooches out the vehicle a little so I have to be more mindful of pulling the fabric in before closing it completely. Worth it though haha.
