Hey there H8'ers,

Here's a synopsis of where I am in my many weeks (listed from recent past-present) of troubleshooting;

1. No start, no turnover, noticed corrosion on one of the fuses to the battery terminal, cut it back and crimped new hardware, started.
2. No start, no turnover, no audible click, positive terminal had been a little loose, tightened terminal/charged/no jump.
***Starter was replaced last year, twice actually. I had a no start, replaced the starter, no start, replaced the Ignition Switch (so at least I know it shouldn't be that right now), no start, circled back and exchanged the POS refurbished starter, installed and started.***
Fast-forward back to present, I had warranty on that starter still, exchanged and installed it, started.
3. No start, positive terminal was toast from it jumping being loose, replaced it and started.
4. No start, no turnover, audible click, FML, no jump, ordered an alternator. Next morning, jump and start.
5. Tested alternator by running the truck and removing the negative terminal, still ran, figured I needed a new battery w/ higher cold crank amps.
6. ***truck overheated, please see my other posting*** Not pertinent to this issue, just for transparency in WTF I have been going through***
7. No start, no turnover, audible click. New battery w/ 810 CCA (last one was 700 CCA). No start. Frustrated AF, noticed lots of build up in the alternator connector and starter connector, disconnected terminal and removed starter to get tested and pick up electrical cleaner and ratchet set since all I've been working with is some metric wrenches (starter was good). Cleaned connections, put terminal and starter back on, no start. It's a Friday night, I'm not going anywhere, changed the alternator since I had it anyways. No start.
8. AND HERE WE ARE FOLKS

So here are some things we know it is NOT; battery, starter, alternator, ignition switch. ***To be noted, the engine turnover has been rough for some time (3-8 second start, not every time though), and my headlights sometimes work and sometimes don't and I have to use high beams. It has also sat for a period of three months twice since I've owned it (2021) and has ben driven down all the way from Maine to Florida w/o issue***

Been using my handy dandy Haynes Repair Manual (Toyota Landcruiser, 1980 thru 1996, Series FJ 60, 62, 80 and FZJ80, w/ 2F, 3F-E and 1FZ-FE engines) and I have come to some conclusions or maybe none at all. This is where y'all come in. My thought process is as follows;

It is electrical. Possibilities...
Ignition System... ignitor, ignition pick-up coil, wiring circuit, Electric Control Module (ECM), Electric Spark Advance (ESA)?
Distributer.... air gap, wear in shaft bushing, ignition timing?
Charging System... fusible link, fuses, ignition control relay? *edit, replaced relay still no start*
Starting System... electrical circuit?
Schematically, I can't think of anything else but I also can't put my finger on it.
I have to go to work on Monday.

Thank you for any and all input! I'll be writing another posting on the other issue I have at hand w/ it overheating. Appreciate y'all :)

I just read your other post. I've been having issues with getting my 1988 62 to start since I've replaced my temp sensor. I'm pretty sure that the ecu needs to read that before it'll start. Your connector looks like it's hanging on by the rubber sheathing. I have a new connector and sensor on order from vintageTeqparts.com. Hopefully I'll be up and running soon. I will double check into this but I'm pretty sure that's part of your starting issue.

Are you aware of the FAQ section to this forum? Right here. FAQ - 60-series FAQ - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/60-series-faq.13183/

Could start there. ,"..noticed lots of build up in the alternator connector and starter connector.."

I'd clean up everything under the hood and check wiring from battery to starter, especially fusible link.
I will have to explore this forum much more thx for the link. Definitely going to do an end to end run through of all links and cables, very thoroughly. It is staring me in the face, I know it. Its the first place I started to troubleshoot, and hopefully will be the last place and that's just how it goes sometimes.

Maybe check the neutral start safety switch. The truck will only start in park. Is your truck truly sensing its in "park" even though it may be on the gear shift? Sometimes the linkage gets worn and it may also not engage the switch well.
I'll look into this for sure! Thx!

First of all, thank you for reading my other post. Second, man... two birds one stone?! That would be amazing. Would you mind sharing the link specific to the one you ordered? I picked up one from O'Reilly yesterday I don't know if it is really compatible but going to verify prior to any installation, just wanted to grab something while I had a ride to the parts store. Also, was there anything going on (patterns, temp) that led you to replacing the sensor vs. the thermostat? I appreciate your response!!!

UPDATE: From an outside glance the fusible links just looked old but further inspection peeling back the rubber wiring they look pretty shot. Going to cut and crimp the solo green one but I think I need to replace the wire completely for the other. Looking at the photos can someone tell me which is which (MAIN/AM1/AM2)?

those fusible links look terrible. Have you checked resistance across each of them? We offer a rebuild service for them if you can mail your originals.

I ended up going out for a little mobile repair on this one today.

Those fusible links, ugly as they were are actually still functional. I did replace them though.

The issue was simply the main power cable bolted to the painted part of the cheapo positive battery terminal. Only had 2v going through it.
It was replaced with a proper OEM style terminal. I’ll let Avery post pics :)

I haven't installed mine yet but this is what I ordered, there is also a repair kit for $94 that has both sides of the connection.
