OK, I've been through a lot of threads and now they are just jumbles together in my head. My 88 was running fine, with the occasional mysterious momentary loss of power but it would always come right back. Saturday I was driving on side streets, coasting up to a stoplight and it just died. Will crank, but not start. Towed home and started diagnosing.
No spark
12V at coil positive terminal
Coil resistance measures OK per the FSM. (I'm going to pull it out, clean up terminals and check it again to be sure)
EFI relay clicks and connects the appropriate pins with 12V applied.
15A EFI fuse is OK
CEL is not illuminated when key is in "on" position, not running

What to check next? per the FSM, inspect the pickup coil resistance. But I don't really understand this G, NE, G-0 graphic - is that the plug on the side of the distributer? can this be checked installed or do I have to pull the distributer? there's not a lot of room there. anyone have a pic that could help me?

What else to look for? Seems like the lack of CEL light when "on" is a clue, but I forget where that clue points me?

Not sure if it is significant, but I just had the AC redone at a local shop. New "universal" condenser, evap, compressor and dryer. was cruising in cool comfort until i wasn't anymore....

ok. following up as I unravel this. today I inspected the fusible links because that seems to be a typical suggestion when the CEL is not on when the ignition is in the on position. suddenly CEL light is on. plugged the coil "high tension" wire back in and the plug at the coil/igniter, and it started and ran. Idled low compared to previous, but in spec right around 650. so maybe it's the fusible links? I redid them a few years back, I will likely redo again or maybe replace with one of the rebuilt ones.
Went on with checking things and found an issue - the AFM resistance isn't checking right. checking infinity from e2-tha. The other resistances are in spec.
Does that mean I need to replace the AFM?

I think that you are on the right track focusing on the fusible link. My 62 started doing some strange electrical things... clock and radio stopped working... low idle, and a few other symptoms... I parked the rig straight away.

Just as a precaution, I changed all of the fuses in the ds dash panel, and installed a new fusible link that I bought from ToyotaMatt ages ago. The link on the rig wasn't visibly fried, but as soon as I installed the new link, the electrical problems disappeared. Changing out the fuses wasn't necessary, but I did it anyway.

If you suspect that it's the fusible link, man, I wouldn't drive it at all until you update the link.

I agree with that. I'll either refresh it myself or get a replacement.
Another confusing wrinkle - I tested the resistance on the AFM from "E2-THA" per the FSM on my friend's 1990 FJ62, and his also indicated infinite resistance (his runs fine). <confused>

I believe that @CruiserTrash is designing a new, upgraded fusible link for 62s. When he’s got them in production, I’ll be all over one.

Thanks for the shout, and you are correct! I had to make some tweaks to the bracket and another prototype should be in my hands next week. I’ve got all the connectors, wiring, and cabling on hand already. Getting close!

Oh boy! I’m in! Right on.
