Mike,

You rock, man! I can't tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time to ship the door :beer:. With any luck, it will be arriving in Indiana about the same time I return from Japan. I'll post more pics as I get it stripped and primered!! Take it easy!

Skinner,
I just stumbled across this thread and have been glued to it for the last few hours (gotta love dial up out here in the sticks). I am amazed by the detail and loads of info you have shown, it gives me hope that I can get started on my own rig before spring. Put me down on your list of people to contact if you need an extra set of hands sometime. I live just east of the plant and would be glad to help in any way I can.

Mark

I'm new to the site, but a 62 owner for 3 years now. Needless to say this thread has keep me from getting to sleep for a few nights now dreaming about my restoration. Thanks for including us in your project.

'Cause all great minds think alike, rrrrriiiiigggggghhhttttt??? :flipoff2: :hillbilly:

skinner,
How do you plan on putting that skin back on? Do you have a spot welder, I would assume so. Is there something that you must do to get a good seal. Say if it was something like a roof, where lots of water could come in. The spot welds will hold the metal together, but still allow water to get in. Do you use some kind of epoxy glue?
Your rig looks great man, please MORE PICS!!
cheers

Long Awaited Return!!

I'm back (actually, I've been back for a week). . .

Please forgive my lack of updates, as I'm sure you can imagine it has been crazy coming home after being gone for a month. On top of having an all new job, a pregnant wife, and a full '60 resto going down, a buddy of mine's 80 left him stranded last week.

So I apologize, there won't be any photos of the 60 today (it's sitting lonely in the corner of my garage). I'll get back on it ASAP; but I've got to get the 80 out of my garage first. On that note, IF ANYONE HAS A LINE ON A 60 DRIVERS REAR 1/4 PANEL SEND THEM MY WAY!! I NEED A NEW ONE BEFORE MOVING MUCH FURTHER!!

In an attempt to keep everyone happy, here are some pics of 80 carnage. Luckily, my buddy called me before having it towed to a shop. . .would have been an expensive repair (pretty nice carnage though, if I do say so myself):

Picture of the disabled 80 (and it's not so happy owner); he just bought it. 200k miles, he had an outer wheel bearing failure, that led to a melted spindle (into the inner hub), that led to a grenaded birf. . . took it apart with an air hammer; nice ;)

I'm replacing the birf & spindle (of course) and also going through and resealing the knuckles, replacing wheel bearings, etc.

I promise to get back on the '60 as soon as the '80 is gone. . .that is if my wife doesn't have me working on the nursery:

Skinner - absolutely fabulous work! Also, congrats on the new baby and job promotion. I am a bit late to the game, but when you stripped the truck down to bare metal, what was your process before spraying the primer? Did you just make it uniform with 120 grit? and then clean and paint? Or did you skim coat anything? I am in the process of a very mild resto in comparison to yours, and I am wondering if I should just strip the whole truck before paint. It would eliminate feathering and uniformity between the paint and bare metal. Sorry for the hijack!

Thanks Skinner - again amazing work,
Chris

Purple, I'll weld the skins back on. I do have a spot welder, however, I won't use it for this job. Instead, I will just make MIG spots to sew the 1/4 skins back on. I'll place small MIG spot welds within the holes that were created when I removed the skins.

It would be nearly impossible to do with the spot welder as my electrode selection is pretty slim (plus, I'd have to weld the holes in the skins back up that were drilled when I originally removed them from the donor vehicles).

Man, I can't even begin to explain how hard I looked for Japanese Toyota stuff. I spotted some sweet jackets with the old school TEQ logos within the plant that we doing our proto build at. Couldn't get anyone to sell me one for the life of me. Aside from that, I looked for cruiser junk yards, cruiser parts, etc. . . just couldn't find anything.

You need to speak Japanese and ask this question.
ランクル廃品集積場はどこでもですか。:D

I dont want to even know what that means...probally get you socked in the face...

It would be great to have a big boat and go over seas and just load up on everything. Soon there will be a war on imported land cruiser parts.

Skinner, thanks for the info on the rear skins. My cruiser will need those, I am sure of it. But as time passes I am sure they are getting harder and harder to find.
When and if this project ever gets going my uncle will be handling the body work. He owns a small body shop and has access to sheet metal fab equipment. I will be handling disassembly, reassembly, auto to manual conversion, and prehaps an engine conversion.

He told me to get the body acid dipped, then to deliver it to him. Start wth a clean slate I guess.

Keep those pictures rolling in.

Congrats on the baby and the promotion. It's incredible what you've done to your rig so far. It'll better than new when it's done. Then you'll have to nice rides with lots of history to keep in the family. Can't wait to see it done.

Jon

Thanks for the compliments guys! I'll be getting started on it again this week; I finished the nursery this week and got the 80 out of my shop. I'll be sure to post pics as I make progress!!

Oh yeah, just picked up another new toy. . . an ArcMaster 185 TIG Welder!!

I got the nursery finished, so I have been working on the 60 for the past week. Figured I'd post some update pics; I know it's been a while. I'm still focusing on the body work as of right now. I'm hoping to have it painted before long (maybe within the next couple weeks).

The next step was to finish getting the front clip stripped, the insides of the fenders painted & everything ready for a coat of epoxy and primer. Of course, I also have to get the 1/4's welded in before I can paint. Here are the pics:

Fenders' prime and painted (inside):

New door stripped & ready for epoxy; all the other doors/tailgate scuffed and ready for coat(s) of primer:

Hood & hatch stripped and ready for epoxy:

I went back and smoothed out the roof rack holes; I'll spray another coat of epoxy to seal the bare metal:

Quarter panel mocked up; plan is to weld it in tomorrow/Tuesday. I also got the snake blinder holes in the rocker smoothed out:

I also got the front fenders stripped to bare metal; no pics though.
