It seems like I do more reading than posting on Ih8mud, but I thought I might share a couple photos of my 1984 FJ60. I pulled the body this weekend with plans to complete an overall freshening (hopefully a quick one at that) in time for paint this spring.

:D Ok, now that it's oficially a "New Year" I want to nominate all this as the "Best Project-Biggest Can of Worms 2008 Award".

Great tech and pics, inspirational to a lot of folks.

Thanks so much for all of the info being shared.

*I'll also ask the same thing I did to Project60...

What plan do you have to take care of sealing up all the surfaces, including the ones you won't see, like the rails, inner fenders, etc that are basically not accessible with a sprayer.

Just want to know, as maybe your plan includes a dip tank of phosphorous/zinc and subsequent tank bath for the paint.

Why do all that to leave the opportunity for rust to again breed? Right??

Thanks man! I'm honored to win the award; LOL.

As for you question on rust prevention, anywhere that has been ground to bare steel for welding (like 1/4 panel flanges, etc) have been coated with weldable zinc. In addition, that's why I have left the 1/4 skins off, I'm hoping so coat the entire inners with epoxy (which is weatherproof/impenetrable). After all the painting is done, my plan is to completely hose down all cavities (1/4's, rockers, inner doors, etc) with cavity wax/waxoyl. I'm waiting until after paint is done in hopes that I can avoid any contamination.

Are you shooting her in that beautiful hospital-like operating room?

Is that a tinge of sarcasm I sense? :p

I don't see how I have any other choice. It's 33 degrees outside, my wife has banned me from painting in the living room, and my loan hasn't been approved on the $20k down draft paint booth I need.

Should be no problem spraying it in the shop. I've done on the previous coats this way (rustbullet, chassis, etc) and have had no problems with dust/contamination. We spent about 2 hrs last night scrubbing the shop down to get rid of most airborne dust and what not.

Plus, I'm only spraying epoxy primer now. The first of probably 5-6 coats of primer that will all be sanded. Don't worry though, when I basecoat I'll build some kind of makeshift booth or rent a booth or something.

No , not sarcasm. Just worry! haha
I remember back in high school we shot our buddies Volkswagon Thing bright green in another buds parent's garage. Talk about an utter green hazmat contamination of the doors and absolutely everything else inside it! I thought they were going to kill him. Literally.:hillbilly:

I guess if you made a booth out of plastic sheeting or something it wouldn't be as bad.

Nice job on getting down to bare metal. I know you said previously you were using a DA to take old paint off. But how did you get into all the nooks and crannies? Did you do it by hand?

Thanks! Yeah, DA and for the tight stuff it was either by hand or used 3M pads on my die grinder for a bunch of it. All in all, major time consumer!

I did, however, learn one thing from this whole ordeal. . . my next project gets DIPPED!

Epoxy is finished!!

:D:D Just in time! Here are some pics to enjoy!

Skinner - Looking awesome! Sorry we weren't able to get the door to you before your trip. Mikesta and I are hooking up this next week and I'll figure out a way to box it for greyhound to you.

Have a great trip and talk to you soon.

Rob, you're awesome!!

I sent you a PM.

Thanks again for all the help!!

WOW you spent a lot of time prepping that!! I bet it feels good to get that primer on! I know how much more push it gave me when I finally got my project Porsche painted - after 5 years! It wasn't long after that I got it done!

So... the question is... do you have a new banner for the garage... that says "Year Two":grinpimp:

Niceeee!

As always awesome, wish I was that far along. Maybe soon. :grinpimp:

Just Wow... Now I'm going to sit on the floor and put my head in my hands and re-evaluate my life.

simply amazing!! and for what its worth untill you get that 20k, one of the best body guys i know taught me a trick. a little water on the floor traps the dust when you are cleaning and keeps it from getting kicked back up the squeege takes it out. sometimes when he helped me at my place he even left it down while he sprayed as i have no air circ system. cant say i am a paint and body guy myself but this trick is from a guy with a lot of awards, hope it helps

looking great!! Do you have any pictures of you cutting out the metal above the rear wheels. Thats the only place on mine 62 that is really messed up bad. Previous owner stuck some bondo in there, now its falling out.
Where are you getting your replacment metal from?

That must feel like landing on the moon. So much preperation and work getting the body to that stage and finally masking and spraying....The rest is gonna fly by...if not temporily, then mentally.

This is looking incredible. I can't wait to see the finished product.

I don't have any photos that show the quarter specifically being cut out. However, since I am replacing the entire skin I just drilled the 100 or so spot welds out, cut and the C and D pillar, and pulled the entire skin off. Both replacment 1/4's came from donor cruisers.
