They contacted me and told me they couldn't offer me a warranty because I would be using my own parts.
I said that's fine I accept all responsibility of putting together a non-stock motor. It isn't my first rodeo.
They replied back no I really had to buy all my parts through them.
I explained some of the parts are not really available and that I had to go to fairly in depth process to get them.
They just wanted me to buy the parts at a 35-40% markup. Yeah fxxx that. If they just wanted to make more money they should have just told me that.
Very frustrating to say the least. If you know of a good engine/machine shop that would take on this project in the Colorado/Utah/Nevada/Arizona area please let me know.

Robbie is a good dude and will give you unbiased information whether the machine shop he uses can meet the standards necessary on this type of a build.
Have you contacted any of the speed shops in SoCal?
I was trying to keep it within 8 hours or so of Moab so I could stop in and check on things. Long distance sucks. Pushed timelines, getting the run around etc. haha.
There won't be any special standards needed for this build. I am going to use a new OEM bare head and new OEM short block. So they just need to pull rods and pistons ensure head and block are flat, measure bore, file rings, measure bearing clearance and install bearings, rods and pistons. The head will be a little trickier but nothing too crazy. Every part in the valvetrain except the cams are coming from Ferrea a very high quality well known company.
I would like a company familiar with the 1FZFE, but a good machine/engine shop could handle it.
Sounds like Robby might be in. I will wait until the head parts come in and then I will round everything up and take it over so he can look over the project and see if I am off my rocker or not and if he thinks the VQ setup will work like I think it will.
It will probably be the first actual piece that I have in my hands. But the Ferrea stuff shouldn't be too far behind. As soon as it and the Kelford cams get here I will be headed over to Robbie's
He has some idea, his machinist has some ideas and I have some ideas so hopefully between the 3 of us we can get something put together. haha.
If Beno can't do it because of work I will take some detailed pics before porting or polishing anything. Robbie's machinist wants to send it out for some crazy new kind of port and polish job. So we will see.
I ported and polished a set of SBC iron heads many moons ago. The Toyota head is already cleaner than that was for sure.
There is a process called "Flow Porting" or "Flow Polishing" that forces a VERY abrasive material through the runners at high volume to simulate the characteristics of a fluid and it ports and polishes at the same time. They do the head with the intake and exhaust manifolds attached in order to make sure they all match. Matching the int and exh manifolds to the head is one of the most important things, then matching the gaskets as well so they don't create restrictions.
It looks like a big dog sh***ing ground peach pits coming out of the exhaust manifold, is reclaimed, then reintroduced into the intake until the desired finish is achieved.
Yes extrude honing has been around for years, it does a lot of smoothing but it doesn't remove all that much material. When you are talking about port shaping extrude honing won't help much. But extrude honing is kind of the lazy guy's way out so I might go that way. lol
But yes gasket matching was already going to be done, Beno also has new gaskets for me to work with.
