80 series steering box into a 60 series (2 Viewers)

Before I get stuck into ripping everything apart - does the 60 series pitman arm fit the 105 series sector shaft, or do I also need a new pitman arm?
If I need a new pitman arm - which one do I need to buy?

You don’t need the 105 pitman arm unless you’re on 35’s or larger, which is unlikely for a 60 series.

You can use your existing 60 series pitman.

I was worried as I thought I read that the 105 sector shaft and 60 series pitman arm had different splines, so wouldn’t work…
Didn’t want to rip it all apart to find out!
 
Well, that was a bit of a disaster / waste of a few hours….
I snapped the pitman arm puller, couldn’t get the hydraulic lines out the top of the 60’s box (kept starting to round over). And couldnt get the drag link separated from the other end of the pitman arm….
Bolted it all back together….

I had to cut my shaft off the 60 box and destroy it. It broke two snap on pullers.

I forgot about that.
 
The 105 sector shaft has more splines than the 80/60 box has. You cannot use your 60 or 80 pitman arm on a 105 sector shaft, you have to use the 105 pitman arm.

Good news is that you can use the 105 pitman arm if you ream out the arm for the 60 tre taper, or just use the 80/105 tre.

Okay, so now I am confused!!
In searching online I found the 80 / 105 pitman arms fit each other (see pics)
I thought if that was the case, my 60 would work too…
The pitman arm in the pics is what came with the new steering box, but I think I need one with the drop or the steering stabiliser will be too high and hit the guard under the radiator…

Confused what to do now!

When I put the 105 sector shaft in my 80 box to go on my 60, I had to use a 105 pitman arm to match the 105 sector shaft.

Remember that the reason why the 105 sector shaft is an upgrade, it is larger at the end to prevent the splines from twisting above the pitman arm.

I don't know why those listings say it works, but the 105 sector shaft is larger at the end where the pitman arm attaches. That's the whole point of using it.

I installed the FZJ80 steering box with the FJ62 pitman arm in an FJ62, but when I turned the steering wheel, the front wheels went the other way. :rofl:, is it because the pitman's arm?
I just got an FJ80 pitman arm with part number 45411-60360, but didn't installed it yet.

Any suggestions?

That is because you actually installed a 70 series box.
 
You installed a 70 series gearbox. Trust me. They spin in the opposite direction of 60/80 boxes
 
My factory 320k mile steering box is leaking bad on my 1989 62.

Looks like an 80 box will fit, but where to get it? Prices and descriptions are all over the place.

Any recommendations?

I keep a re-sealed 80 box in stock at all times… and yes it will fit your FJ62. Just swap over your pitman arm.
 
Hey there! All 80 boxes are the same. Only modification I had to do to my 62 was cut some metal off that splash shield thing that goes around the steering shaft. Original power steering lines threaded right in!
I believe the HJ61 steering box would be the same as the FJ62 box and would thus be a straight swap. I reused my 62 pitman arm as well.

Great video. Picked up a few good tips and installed my 80-series box without issue.

For the pitman arm (had to remove two), I used a cheap two jaw pitman arm puller, put a little heat on the outer ring of the arm. I kept some tension using the puller and hit with 2-pound hammer repeatedly toward the tie rod end of the arm to loosen it up. The vibration helped move the arm, I’d then tighten again on the puller until it broke free.

Wasn’t bad at all, probably about 2 hours of work for me the other day.

Work on taking the pitman off first and it’s all easy from there. Hitting the bend in the arm while using tension with the puller vibrated it loose nicely.

I kept my wheels set straight before pulling the old box and made sure the used box was centered up. I think I counted 4.5 turns lock to lock, so 2.25 to get back to center.
