Recently bought this '97 LX 450 to replace the 1989 FJ62 I've had for 18 years. FJ62 will be sold locally to a young man interested. At least, that's the plan. I've changed all fluids and done plugs, wires, cap and rotor with Toyota/Denso parts. All of this work was overdue. With the more skilled help of Mud member "Advent" it has new oxygen sensors too. Power steering pump needs fixing, as does driver's power seat gear and driver's window. New tires today, 265/75r/16. Previous tires well worn and 265/70r/16, a bit smaller than stock. No intention of lifting it.

This is my first Land Cruiser after admiring them for years. I have enjoyed this forum as a lurker for a while. There is an amazing amount of knowledge here - thanks to all of you - I am sorry I won’t have as much to contribute. I have been driving a late model full size GMC Sierra, really got bored with it and didn’t like anything else out there - so I kept coming back to these 80s. After finding this one I’m all in - have sold the GMC and have happily gone back in time.

My plan is to keep this clean and stock for now as a throwback daily driver, maybe converting it to an over lander one day in the distant future, maybe not.
I have original factory brochure i just found while moving. PM me address and ill get it to you Jake

New to me :)

As to be expected with an older truck, it's not perfect. Leaks a little bit of oil, 2 lock actuators are out of commission. The rear hatch lock seems frozen. Antenna jammed up. And then the fading paint. The previous owner painted the hood and roof black, which looks fine to me but as a whole, the paint could use some love at a later point once funding becomes available (maybe someday WAY down the line).

I was pondering the idea of having something for the 80 series guys, and hijacking the idea from the 100's and 60's about a registery or picture album in the sticky section. So...here goes, hopefully we'll get it moved to the sticky.

1. Year and model
2. Name of owner
3. Name of rig
4. Mileage
5. Mods...if any
6. How the truck is used
7. Photo. again...small to save space :)

Yeah... if you look in the 60 registery, there is nothing really different between the two, but might as well give us something to do with our endless nights on Mud. Haha

This is not anything like the ROTW, this is for everyone and anyone who wants to show us their rig. Feel free to. That's why its here. Well...now anyway's.

Mate, she's a Bute !

I purchased 1995 1HDJ80 1HD-FT from Japan .. It arrived in Galveston, TX in January 2021 .. I'm looking at the Turbo Cross over Pipe & notice that yours is bigger across the top .. But it also appears you have Smog Equipment on your Rig ? .. When did that become the standard kit .. I have seen others without that kit ..

Thanks!

About the smog equipment, I think its about the markets, not the years. In some markets it was offered without EGR. My truck originated in Germany.

congrats on getting an 80. It seems as if there are not many diesels over there in the US? How are the petrol vs diesel when compared in terms of reliability and performance?

Yes, diesel rigs here in the U.S. are few in number .. The Emissions Standards for a vehicle that are more than 25 years old no longer apply .. I was lucky to find a vehicle with 157,000 original miles & was 25 years old .. This 1996 diesel Land Cruiser Right Hand Drive with ==> Toyota Differential Lockers <== has low mileage, 177 km & looks very clean for its age .. I would have them show pictures of the engine bay before buying it .. LINK .. It is priced at ~$30k USD .. I negotiated my price for my vehicle down ~$2,5k from the ~$30k USD asking price .. Shipping & Insurance was $2300 USD .. U.S. Customs fee's were 2.5% of the total price .. I was required to pay an excise tax of $1450 USD for the state of New Mexico ..

Petrol versions here are many .. Mileage 14 City, 18 highway .. Expected Engine life 300k miles before rebuild typically .. Performance as follows ..
  • 212 hp
  • Torque: up to 275 lb-ft of torque @ 3200 Rpm

Diesel Engines are very few .. Mileage 20 City, 32 highway .. Expected Engine life 600k miles / 1,000,000 km before rebuild typically .. Performance as follows ..
  • 168 hp
  • Torque: up to 280 lb-ft of torque @ 2500 Rpm

I read last night that the EGR'ed Motors that were given a slightly bigger turbo due to the EGR equipment .. Hence the larger volume cross over pipe .. I don't know what the published HP / Torque is for that setup .. WiKi doesn't list that configuration .. ?? .. I have also looked at the turbo & it is not the same as the one in my vehicle .. The EGR version turbo is bigger and so is the cross over pipe .. I watched a couple of videos which suggest that the EGR version engine life is reduced because of the soot being fed back into the engine .. There are many articles here on MUD that show how to remove the EGR equipment and cap off the pipes .. The soot will increase the cylinder / piston wear & the engine will run hotter .. This will reduce the engine life but I do not know the actual numbers ..

--

Additional Upgrades Related to Performance:

I am still planning on upgrading my turbo mildly .. I just want to be able to pull ~ 4-5 Tons .. My turbo, according to what I have read, say it puts out about 7-8 psi of boost .. The turbo in the EGR version is supposed to put out 8-9 lbs of boost .. I found one person say that the on in his vehicle actually put out 10 psi ..

I would like to increase the boost to 14-15 Psi with a good intercooler to keep exhaust gas temperatures below or between 1,100 F - 1,200 F..

In addition I want to change the valve body on my transmission so it will run cooler with an addition of a transmission fluid radiator .. The transmission will also shift more efficiently with this modification .. With the higher engine power the heat in the transmission will increase ..

I plan to install a larger more efficient radiator as I will place the intercooler in front of the engine radiator ..

I have read a lot of good things about ByPass Oil Filters .. This extra filter takes 10% of the oil and re-filters the oil .. The reason for this extra filter is that it removes most of the soot in the oil .. Amsiol Bypass Oil Filter Kit .. The standard oil filters will filter down to ~20-30 micron is most Diesel vehicles .. This allows soot to build up in the oil .. Toyota recommends that every 6 km you do an oil change .. Using a good synthetic oil with the bypass oil kit will increase the change interval from 6 km to 16 km .. I have seen the oil after a change & it is clear .. This will increase engine life ..

I like the current lift height in my Cruiser, ~2.5" .. I don't like the shocks .. I am planning on purchasing King Lift Shocks for the vehicle ..

At this time, I can't justify Differential Lockers .. They are very nice to have in difficult country & also on ice & snow ..

---

The main reason for me buying a 1HD-FT 80 Series Diesel is that if an EMP weapon were to be detonated, my vehicle would continue to run .. My radio wouldn't work but at least I will be driving while all other vehicle with electronics ignition systems will be disabled ..

The Emissions Standards for a vehicle that are more than 25 years old no longer apply ..
Only in some states !!!

This is an Amsoil Bypass filter which takes 10% of the oil, filters it, then runs the clean oil into the top end of the engine .. Using a good synthetic oil one can extend oil life & have it look clean when it is drained from the engine .. The large 2 micro filter will remove the soot & prolong your engines life .. Not having to change your oil at 6 km is nice .. With this setup oil change intervals can be changed to 16km without harm to the engine ..

This is an Amsoil Bypass filter (..)

Thanks for a great and informative reply. You seem to have a lot of knowledge about 80s.

Will look into the Bypass filter. Will also look into EGR delete.

Doing birf and knuckle rebuild here now.
Best of luck with your 80!
