On the topic of tires, I'd stay away from any of the Cooper tires. They are hands down the worst tires I've ever run. I've had a few different ones and they all suck! The Toyo RT is not a bad hybrid tire. The General Grabber AT is a nice AT tire but it's definitely more of a road tire. The Grabber X3 is more aggressive and most would say its an MT but I think of it more as a hybrid tire. The Falken Wildpeak AT is actually a really good AT and does surprisingly well offroad. It's also more of a road tread pattern but it rides really nice and quiet and still hooks up pretty well in the dirt. That's probably the tire I would get if I were doing a true AT tire.

But....I will always have MTs of some kind on my cruiser and definitely have my favorites in the MTs.

Others have mentioned it already but you'll need to move up to a 17" wheel if you want to run 37's. There's almost no tire options for 37's on a 16" wheel these days.

Just wrapping up a trip from NE WY to Southern Utah and back on 37s w/ factory gearing. Not normally aspirated though, so that makes all the difference. Still use OD off and 2nd often. Got 4.88s from Cruiser Outfitters back in April and haven’t ripped the axles out to go through them yet . . .but I’m happy as it is.

Yeah I cant find any 16s for sure been looking for a few day weighing all the options, I dont mind the MT but they doe make a rough terrain hybrid also. I just want a tire that isn't so loud and wont wear so fast but can still do great in Moab and 5 mile if that makes sense. Thats funny I went with a buddy with coopers and like them and have good reviews I was actually considering the discover stt. So those grabber x3s do well? I like the idea of those a little more

I'd disagree with that, the 4 sets of ST maxx's ive had have all been great, as have the stt pro's that have been on my 80 for 2.5 years. I am pretty sad that goodyear bought them out, as I not a fan of theirs at all.

What coopers did you run and what didnt you like about them?

The Cooper STT Pro is hands down the worst tire I’ve ever had on my 80. Hard to balance. Horrible wear pattern and tread life. Mediocre off-road. Loud on the road. It was garbage. There are many people with similar experiences with them. Ask @Dirty Koala about his experience with the STT Pro.
Had the AT3’s on another car. Those were junk too. Had more punctures with those tires in a year than I have for the rest of my life (30+ years of driving). Been the same experience for my parents with the AT3’s on their Yukon.

My brother has the ST Maxx on his Armada. He can’t stand them. Have also heard enough bad experiences from others too so I know we’re not just flukes. I’ll never buy another Cooper tire. There are plenty of way better options out there.

I would buy 100 sets of the Mickey Thompson MTZ before I’d buy a single STT Pro.
Agree on the Cooper's - Worst tire I have owned. My son had some Falken's on his Tacoma and they were amazing off road, tons of grip but wore out very quickly! I would recommend the Toyo's or BFG KO2 or KM3. Have run all of them and would buy any of them again.

They do look soft just like my current tires and I dont like what I have at all

What do ya think about the Toyo AT3's?

I'm confused by all the Cooper hate. I had Cooper Evolution MTs on my old pickup and they were an excellent tire: great off-road and decent on the highway, and cheaper than any other MTs.

As I said I have no complaints with the ATPs I have now, but I haven't seriously tested them off-road.

I'm sure there's more capable tires out there, but whenever I'm shopping for tires, the lower prices and lighter weights of the Coopers attract me to them.

Reviews on the major tire sellers were overwhelmingly positive as well. Maybe they don't do as well long-term on a heavy truck like a LC?

Odd, I ran 2 sets of st maxx on my 80 over 8 years and 60k miles, loved those. I currently have them in 37's on one of my 100's and in 33's on my wifes v8 4runner. Her truck had new k02's on it when we bought it, the st maxx are exponentially better in the snow and at 3 years old and about 65% tread @35k miles, still quiet and balance easily. I had falken wildpeak at's on my other 100 series for a season, they did great in the snow but the baja boss AT's it has now are noticeably better.

The stt pros that have been on my 80 for the last 2.5 years have been great but did take a bit of weight to balance. They are a softer compound tire and work great in rocks. Even at 2.5 years and 13k miles they are quieter than the yokohama g003's I had for a few months. I honestly wouldnt buy them again, there are better mt's out there. I paid $200 each for 35/12.5/17's, that definitely played a role in picking them. I have heard quite a bit of complaints about tread wear, but here in AZ tires dry out before they wear out 95% of the time. My 80 is only used for trails/trips, so I dont care so much about tread life on that truck.

I have never run at3's, and never would as they have paper thin sidewalls. Same thing with duratracs.

For anyone who doesn’t know, cooper owns Mickey Thompsons tires. After the buy out, the st maxx and stt pros were built on the same carcass/sidewall as the Mickey Thompson tires. About 8 months ago, goodyear bought out cooper tire, so things will probably change.

I ran MTZ's on a 4runner crawler years ago. Those were great tires, but were very loud on pavement. Those are the tires that sold me on the MT/cooper sidewall, AZ rocks are hard on tires and I went through too many bfg and goodyear sidewalls over the years.

I get it. I hate bfg and Goodyear tires… nothing but bad experiences with them, though I’m sure most people would disagree with me there.

Tires are expensive and everyone has a different use and opinions, so everyone prefers something different. I was pretty mad with a few tire purchases, and I be pissed if I bought a cooper tire that had problems. But so far, nothing but good.

I run Baja MTZ P3s. Love them.

They are made by Cooper by the way.

I ran 37s on stock gear for 3 year or so. I do live in desert flatlandville though. City Stop&Go traffic not so good.
Ran 35s for a year also. I liked the 37s on stock gears better because when I did climb 6 to 12% grades the RPM in 2nd was in the SWEET spot. From memory it was around 3800 @ 55 mph. There is approx. 600 RPM from 3rd to 2nd. 35s in 2nd was about 4200 RPM in same hills.
Everything is documented in my build thread, link below.

I ran big heavy 37's off of a HMMWV along with the military beadlocks, on factory gears for a couple years. Never really felt like I needed to regear. It was great for what I wanted

Well look who’s back from the dead ;)

Ran 37s on stock gears from 07-16 ish but like @Saito had the assistance of FI via the kazuma and in NC had flatish travel for daily travel and only 2500’ of climb for the weekend play. Back on 315s since then. The braking advantage seemed greater than the accel challenges. And off-road once Into a trail trail showed the need for gears the most.
