Didn't get nearly as much done today as i had planned!:crybaby:

It was a long day and ended up spending most of it chasing parts and chemicals around town. My friend who has been helping me was delayed until about 1:00pm, so i figured i will run to NAPA and get some parts washer fluid. Went up, couldn't beleive the price ($110/5gallon) but really was in a pinch to clean some parts; so i bought it. Took the guy at NAPA 15 minutes to realize and tell me the guy in the back couldn't find it.

Said i could buy there and pick the same thing up at the store across town, so i said sure and off i went with receipt. Ran in, flashed the reciet, ran out with the parts washer cleaner and headed home. Got home and the bucket clearly states "not for use in parts washers":bang: I will be returning it tomorrow.

so off i headed to lowes to pick up some mineral spirits as a substitute. worked great and started putting the gears on and realized i didn't have a 10 MM allen head socket that i could torque with my torque wrench. :bang:

So back to the store for allen head sockets and the get back to wrenching.

Seals in, surface prepped, FIPG ready to go, realize that i got accidentally skipped on two gaskets from my shipment. one of the oil cooler gaskets and the oil pump cover gasket. :bang: So i can't install the oil pump cover. :bang: BUt at the same time i realize i haven't purchased replacement torx for the cover anyways! So i need to do that.

Oh well, call it! :hillbilly::beer:

Anyone want to remind me what size torx bolt to get for the oil pump cover so i don't have to search? :D

Also on a serious note, the FSM does not show which way to orient the oil pump gear (i guess you would call it the orbital gear that moves around the center stationary gear)? I ASSumed that since there is a mark on the underside of the oil pump drive gear that the orbital gear would also orient the arrow on the lower side?

Just as a FYI and not bashing Cdan or Toyota, it's imporant to note that if you are doing a total motor overhaul and plan on replacing all the gaskets, you would order the "gasket kit" that comes with all the gaskets to rebuild your motor............ except a few.

One of the gaskets missing in the kit is the oil pump cover gasket. Don't know why toyota would think you would go so far to replace the gaskets INSIDE the timing cover but not replace the oil pump gasket?!

So, you will need to order that in addition to the gasket kit.

i take it from you post that you picked up the gasket kit from American Toyota? If so, did you call Dan or Onur and ask about said oil pump gasket? Just curious.

Continue to enjoy you thread!

Correct, i did get the gasket kit. I "think" it's available from any toyota parts house, but not sure.

I did call Cdan and he said that gasket as well as one other is not included in the kit...... which to me honestly is very puzzling. :hhmm::meh:

and so part of the problem to me right now is we have snow on the ground and my rear wheel drive LS400 HATES the snow, so i'm hard pressed to get to a local dealer right now and try to pick the gasket up. . . if they have it. I guess it's just part of the deal, ship happens!

Wow, spectacular write up and build, great pictures, thanks for taking the time to do this for all of us, and here was I wimping about going out to wire up my new aux lights !!

Oil Pump Cover Bolts

I tracked down the oil pump cover bolts today. Picked them up at automotive fasteners and they had them in stock.

Product Code: 0370846

i purchased 10 for a grand total of: $1.28

They did not have any torx so i went with allen head. I think it will be an improvement and hopefully i won't be needing to take the oil pump cover off for another 15 years :grinpimp:

Here are a couple of pics of the original next to the new.

got a little done today. I had a little set back because i was going to put the head on today and then put the oil pans on another time, but the FSM calls for the oil pans on after the timing cover, so, i took about an hour and cleaned up the upper oil pan really well. Slapped it on and then slapped the No 2 oil pan on along with the timing cover today.

Here is a pic of it upside down.

Also decided to use Toyota FIPG instead of permatex stuff. Kind of glad i did considering the Toyota stuff is about the same price anyways.

Toyota FIPG part #: 00295-00103 $11.75

Now here is where i may have a problem and i may be a little upset. It seems that the "gasket kit" that has "every gasket you need to overhaul the 1FZFE" in fact does not have every gasket you need.

Right as i'm about to put the oil level sensor back in (after i clean it up of course :hillbilly:) it calls for a new gasket. Well, unless it's this O-ring i'm showing you, then i'm missing ANOTHER gasket  I really don't think it's the o-ring i'm holding.....

I'm assuming it's the black plastic ring pictured on the picture below? Any suggestions on what this gasket is supposed to look like? I"m going to be upset if i have to stop my project again to order another gasket that i should have had in the "KIT". :bang:

Where did you get those oil pump cover screws? Finally got the 1 I stripped out a little while ago and those would be sweet replacements.

Anyone know the exact dimensions/thread type of the OEM oil pump screws, and what's the depth of the threaded holes? Is there a bit more depth to work with? What type Loctite should we use on the screws when putting the oil pump cover back together?

Torx is a great option, just didn't have any in stock at the time at the location i was at. Felt the allen head was a very close second so i went for it.

Thanks for the screw size; seems like the original screws are too short to hold the cover on tightly. IDK.

Concrete,

Enjoying the thread - nice job and I hope the little things that pop up aren't overshadowing the overall achievement. This is quite a job and you're managing it well. Isn't it amazing all the little stuff? I'm mechanically restoring a Vanagon Syncro this winter, so we're in parallel universes regarding things popping up. Take something off to replace a seal which should take an hour. A grommet crumbles. Said grommets are no longer available. Buy a slab of rubber, a hole saw and a correct drill bit and make them. 3 days later put the part back on.....

It is frustrating, but it's part of the process. It's actually a good thing for me, i think. I have a bad habit of getting going and get some momentum and keep pushing through. Often this causes me to overlook something or just plain make a mistake and by the time i've caught it, it's too late, everything is buttoned up.

This way, i have breaks in the action to think about what i've done and make sure everything is good.

:hillbilly::wrench:

I'm trying to do my best at posting part #s on gaskets and accessories i pick up as i go. If i forget, please call me out and let me know so i can keep this thread informative.
