I did actually end up getting just a few minor things done. First, bolt up the fresh, clean and painted motor mount brackets with fresh new mounts! Hopefully she will purrrrrrrr smooth now. :grinpimp:

Next was to clean out the oil cooler! That thing was nasty!

Here is a shot of a "little spring thingy" that was in the cooler. Take a look at that crud! Same stuff we see in our radiators when we flush them.

here it is mounted with new gaskets and a fresh paint. :grinpimp:

Great thread. Keep up the awesome work!

Looking great! Love all the pics

You're missing a piece from the engine mounts (too much Corona? :D). There is a metal cover piece that goes between the rubber isolators and the bracket on the engine. It prevents the mounts from overextending and it would "catch" the metal sides on the rubber isolators if the rubber mount ever broke.

You can see them in the photos of your original post in this thread.

You could be right.... i still have the old ones sitting in the engine bay where they were left. I'll go out and see if they are still there. This is another example of how the FSM is really clear about most things but it skips some stuff too.

EDIT: yep, good catch! I probably would have figured that out when i took the tarp off the truck and started preparing to put the motor back in.... still good eye!

Can I get you your favorite beer and some movie tickets and have you do the same to my rig? :)

So long as you figured it out before installing the engine it's all good! I'm still thinking about trying to replace the mounts with the engine still in the truck...

Incredible thread.

Makes me much more comfortable with the reality that I probably need to tear things down and do a full rebuild when I have the finances to retire the 80 from DD duties.

I wonder how many 1FZs operating out there are in internal shape as good as yours?

I kind of thought about it this way also....

I love the 80 and since you can't buy one new, and i have a lot of time and money already into my rig and know it well, the next best thing would be to try to make it a new 80. I call my 80 my swiss army knife cause it does so many things well and you just can't find that anymore IMHO.

AND, since i'm fortunate enough to have a car as my DD, i'm in no rush so i can do things the right way.

Right now as funds allow, phase 1 is the "power plant".... so motor/turbo which is what i'm doing now. Phase II will be all new window gaskets/seals, new front seat leather from atlas and a new stereo. Phase III will be frankies lift and axle rebuild with gears.

Thanks for the compliments.

I must also admit that i am in over my head and without a good friend helping to advise on little things that only experience can show, i don't know how it would all turn out.

I had someone call me with front end problems a week ago and was looking for my thoughts on what might have gone wrong with the front axle rebuild.

He called back a couple days later to tell me the trunion bearings where installed upside down.

I no longer feel bad asking for your help with my vibe issue at all (95% fixed too - thanks R!) I bet if I do my U joints I'll have 'er licked!

This thread is so full of win & is what most of us want to do / serious motivation for me, especially with my last week of luck - time to buy a hoe-chee bucket & drive it while following your path, that or sourcing a 1/2 cut diesel w/ low miles (yeah, right.).

OK, i have a new in the box Head Gasket to sell if anyone is interested.

If you think you might consider having/needing a block heater now is the time to pop out the freeze plug and install it. I just went through all of the old threads, did some internet searches and ended up getting the KAT's 11414, which I can not tell apart from the OEM one I got from Canada. Oddly it is only ~$20 from Amazon or NAPA.

Mike... you ARE the man!

I have been thinking about that like crazy. I still have the old one that i ordered from Toyota of Canada and it's the wrong one, just haven't done anything with it. It was just too small to fit in the freeze plug hole. But for $20 i may just run up to NAPA and grab one!

Thanks!

to conitue the madness..... this came in the mail today! :grinpimp:

This should be going on this Saturday. I think i'm done ordering parts for crying out loud... talk about a money pit! :hillbilly:

Except for the block heater... i'm done ordering parts.... for real this time.

Got your power steering pump yet ???? :D Sparkplugs?

Dunno how many last pieces I ordered. Looking good though and that is a seriously beef HG.

Glad to see you got the HG.

The Cometic HG sure is a work of art and it's a shame it's hidden.
And as for buying parts, like you, I can't believe how much I've spent to ensure things are done properly. The OEM parts I got were the biggest contributor to budget blowout, glad I'm not alone HAHA!!!

Glad to see you got the HG.

Yes, thanks. Luise at paradiseracing was really great to work with! He said he is going to jump on this board and see if he can supply some parts to us cruiserheads.
