I'm still in the squirreling away phase. I've got partsouq, wits end, and mcgeorge boxes at my door most days.

I found that the intake gasket from one of the crossover numbers from partsouq, I believe an fzj105, didn’t work. I think they had wrong gasket in, it was small and very oddly shaped.

This list was instrumental in getting mine back on the road.

Thanks everyone for putting this together and for the detailed information.

I have a 285K short block that is the machine shop getting cleaned (no machining or boring!).

When I bought the truck the head had seized somehow and camshaft and gears were damaged.

Plan is to rebuild the bottom end with new OEM as much as possible.

Upon disassembly everything on the bottom, end was clean as a whistle, no scoring, no discernible wear, all the tolerances were within spec. Crank looks new.

Machine shop guy said all of the 1FZs that come in look like that.

As I've shared in the past, if a new short block wasn't avail from T, I would've gladly reused mine as my local 80 friends have done themselves with no issues.

I remember right about this time 2021 I was pouring over parts diagrams, conducting an inane amount of ih8 searches, waiting on deliveries, finding shop time, securing a discount deal with a massive local LA Toyota dealership, transporting the engine back and forth in a Uhaul truck... LABOR OF LOVE.

I’m still in contemplation on rebuilding vs new short block.
Bottom end failure so my crank will need to be turned and rods will to be checked and most likely re done. I would have chose rebuild a lot easier if that wasn’t the case.
Either way I need to start getting parts. Huge thanks for putting this together.

I am by no means qualified to give advice on the rebuild vs new short block decision but it looks like a few dealers have short blocks for $3500-ish right now though.

As I recall, the new factory black comes with a fresh bushing. Only need a new one if you're rebuilding the old block.

Oil Pump Bushing

The oil pump bushing is not available through Toyota and is often needed for a proper engine rebuild. This is a machined bushing that matches the original in design, however is made out of navel brass which is more durable. In addition there is an install tool available to aid with installing...

Update with correction (thanks to @FMC80):

I'm not sure if I mentioned it in this thread, but it looks like the 1FZ-FE engine valve cover (11201-66021) is still available from Partsouq at the time of this writing. It was missing from my parts list because I was misinformed that the valve cover was NLA. Sorry for any confusion.

Based on this thread, there's been a supersession (66020 -->66021) so pls do your homework to make sure it's compatible with your 80. From my cursory read, it looks like it fits all US 1FZ-FE powered 80s.

My engine is now 17K miles old - still operating as a newly built unit should. Don't pass up the new 105 power steering gear box while you can still grab one. There's nothing like factory fresh. Pound-for-pound, it's a bargain at $2K. I might buy another one to stash away for a rainy day.

Here's likely the final update to the raw OEM parts list that's custom to my rebuild. You're not seeing a lot of the major accessories like pumps, radiator, hoses and filters because they were already replaced with new 3 years ago. I'm also replacing every bit of the EGR system (parts gathering dust as we speak).

As you can see from the go, there are non-engine related parts that I incrementally added as a "while in there" effort. I accrued the part numbers by just doing a bunch of search on ih8, DM'ing some other rebuild OPs (u know who u r thx) and referencing partsouq db. I'm certain to miss bits and pieces, but live & learn, enjoying the journey.

• The lifters took the longest to source, even longer than the short block which came straight from Japan
• I'm just going to let the machine shop handle the shims for obvious reasons
• The engine harness I got maybe half a year or so ago is made in Vietnam; everything else on my list is Japan made
• I sourced parts from four primary vendors: 1) A SoCal Toyota parts center; 2) Partsouq; 3) Boch Toyota; and 4) Amayama
  • Partsouq is definitely the most reliable and best packaged
  • Amayama is hit or miss so I avoided them except for the bigger ticket items that cost markedly less than Partsouq or weren't available via Partsouq (consistently longest to ship)
  • Boch Toyota hasn't botched an order yet, but their packaging needs work and their communication is sparse which is ironic given they're USA-based
  • Fedex charged duty tax via snail mail on the power steering gear order which might be because the thing is pushing 50lbs (maybe raised some eyebrows at the airport)
  • If anyone wants a referral to the SoCal Toyota parts guy, DM me (shipping a short block is a non-starter!)

Unless you’re a nut job like me and insisted on all new internals, including shims, many reuse their og shims and source replacements as needed.

I needed 10 of the same sized T shims that were not available anywhere. Dave 4x4 actually had to order them from T to have them made or sourced from someone’s parts bin in Japan. This delayed my engine build for a few weeks.

That doesn't look like a 1fz part I have seen.

The oil pump is located in the timing cover and is driven by a crank sprocket set.

You can order the oil pump assembly I also believe you can order the entire complete timing cover with the oil pump sprocket set and cover installed.

We're all here to learn and I don't think you're an idiot for bringing up oil pump wear.

I recently refreshed my 1fz and while I had everything tore down I went ahead and replaced the oil pump sprocket set along with everything else I could touch.

The FSM has a procedure with feeler gauges to actually check for oil pump wear. Mine was within specification. I was curious if I would see oil pressure differences by replacing the pump. The result is I believe I'm seeing more in line with what the factory specification for oil pressure fluctuation should be with the new set.

I just received my new Factory Short block I'll be taking the brand new parts off the refreshed 1fz and moving them over. Timing chain components, oil pump, oil cooler, and some of the sensors.
