Hello to all,,, long time reader,,,, this forum rocks..... A lot of good people and info on here. I recently acquired a new valve cover for my 1996 FZJ80 Cruiser through a swap meet. toyota Cat # 11201-66021. Price was too good to pass up,,,,,lol.... Upon opening the box, I noticed black spark plug tube gaskets smaller in size by a fraction , compared to the usual brown ones that Toyota offers as current replacement part, and in addition , I also found that the layout on the bottom of the valve cover has some different features , some extra baffles around the openings that go to the pcv valve ,, sorry no pics ,,, need to learn how to post here...how ever, it does fit on to my engine with out any issue.

I am concern about the spark plug tube gaskets,, they are different in design and size,, a little weird. This new valve cover catalog number susperceeds #11201-66020. From my experience the usual spark plug tube seals are brown in color,, did Toyota decide to upgrade the a different valve cover regarding the new seals and the added baffles to reduce the oil build up in the intake ?as we all know to well.....lol

Is this valve cover really made for my 96 cruiser? I can't even find a cat # for replacement spark plug tube seals for this new updated valve cover to check for proper fitment .......Anybody else have this experience ? Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
STRICTLY CUSTOM

Valve body and valve cover = 2 different things. Valves in engine are valve train, valve body is in the transmission. Fix your title and you might have more people chime in.

Sorry about title of this thread,,suppose to read valve cover not valve body,,, guess it will take a couple of postings to be allowed to go back and change things... :bang: Lol.

@nuclearlemon, want to lend a hand in helping him change the title? @beno or @cruiserdan any input on the valve cover issue?

my recent gasket "kit" Engine Kit #04112-66036 .. came with brown gaskets ... and the originals (I presume) that I replaced were brown as well.fwiw

Hello Beno,,,,, I was hoping you would drop in. you would be the one to answer my Toyota parts question,,,,lol. The black spark plug seals that came with the Toyota Valve cover were pressed in for sure,,, only a factory can press them in like that with out any marks left behind,,,not even a scratch ...lol. The box clearly was marked with the typical red white toyota tag with Cat # 11201-66021. Still wrapped in the plastic bag inside the box. I did some research online and saw that at some point this replaced the cat # 11201-66020,, not sure when that happened, or why......?

The seller of this part at the swap meet had sold his 80 to buy a classic 70's Chevy pickup, and was selling of some of his left over 80's parts collection for his new project . He had some decent stuff. You never know what you will find at these automotive swap meets. I think we have a all been there before at some point in life...moving on to another project,,, lol.

I paid 150.00 for it. Though it was fair price at the time , considering what they go for at some dealers and he had all the original wrapping , never used. My valve cover on my 80 is really beat and I thought with all the maintenance I have been doing lately,, buying a new valve cover , seals already pressed in and ready to paint sorta speak was a good option for me.

I will try my best to post up pictures today somehow,,, would really like to share my findings with this possible upgrade from Toyota with the spark plug tube seals and the added small baffle covers to keep the oil from getting into the air intake system.

Since you are one of the Toyota Parts Guru,,on here,,, maybe you can Find out the Intel,,,,,,, if Toyota really did make this upgraded valve cover for various reasons.

Thanks Beno for your input on this.

Jeff

Interesting. It indeed does supersede to the -66021. The 1 in the last position indicates some type of design or supplier change (internal to Toyota).

Black spark plug tube seals are 11193-70010. Never thought to compare them against the -15010's.

That said, the black could be for original manufacture and then the service part (the one you buy from Toyota) would be the brown one.

That's all I've got.

You are the man Beno,,,, Thank you for the black seal number, and your input with the updated Valve Cover Cat #. There is definetly a difference between the black seal and the brown seal. the radius of the black seal regarding the metal band within the seal that keeps the seasl in shape while getting pressed into the valve cover is slighty less in radius by a hair,, and even the heigt of the band is not as high,, also by a hair difference. actualy sems easier to press into place compared to the brown seal. also where the spark plug tubes on the engine would sit into the black seals ,,, seems tighter from a visual view. Do you know for sure if the 11193-70010 black seals are compatible with are us designed engines " spark plug tubes" on the 1996 FZJ80?

Strickly Custom....
Correct me when I go amiss...

You do not know the age of the seals in the valve cover you have (likely from early 90s).
You must remove the valve cover and Intake to replace the seals, which requires a metal intake gasket, which should not be reused.
New spark plug seals cost about $10-15 and the dealership can have them in about 2 days.
They are easily removed with a Lisle Model 56750 which can also be used to remove seal for Front Axle.
Your time and frustration upon learning that Black seals are leaking and oil is dripping in plug holes???
The rest is up to you.

I'd do PCV Valve, Hose, and Grommet while your at it, but not everyone has the extra $30.

HORND

I already have my original valve cover already off, doing other engine work,, and have done replacement of spark plug seals on other cruisers, as well my current valve cover is beat up , extremely dirty,,, i got my hands on this newer valve cover at a swap meet that did not need excessive cleaning and prep as compared,,to the newer cover and condition,, to many other things going on ...lol

, it was mostly about this extra updated revised Toyoita valve cover i got my hands on,,,, i had already started to paint it up, and getting ready to put new seals into,, and realized that the seals are different, which is what has stopped me in my tracks sorta speak. I tried getting the typical toyota brown seal # 1119315010 into the new style valve cover , and not happening,, took a digital caliper, and found that the brown seals are too big in radius,, enough to stop the seal from going in at all, not a possibility,, is not happening...lol Beno's black seal number he mentioned , is most lkely belongs in this new designed valve cover.. Trust me,,, i woulkd have been done with this 2 days ago....lol

Any updates on this? I'm looking for the seals for my 97 LX450 and don't want to buy the wrong ones.

11193-15010 is the correct part number for valve cover's through 8/1999. After that these do indeed go to the 11193-70010 spark plug tube seals (black, smaller) for the later valve cover. But that's probably not going to be an issue here in the US market because folks are generally not buying new valve cover's from Toyota.

I have a NOS valve cover Part# 11201-66020 with the black seals. The part # was provided to me when I purchased it from an individual so it very well could be 11201-66021 having black seals. Wish the original poster still has pictures of his to compare the backside.
