On another note, question about the marker lights below the headlights. I'm 99.9% sure that there on when the headlights are on. But, was there a secondary position on the switch for parking lights?? I didn't think so and wouldn't think so, but wanted to ask? I would just assume they come on with the headlights?

Thanks, Matt

On early 40/45's the light switch has 3 positions and off. The front markers come on seperate of the head lights, this is 'park'. Then you have head lights and tail lights, and NO front parking lights, then there is 'convoy' mode where you have no head lights or front parking lights, just the tail lights.

And you really should change those lenses to clear...the orange just doesn't look right.

I agree with Dan on the lense color. The clear lenses for the turn signals are: SOR #146-02A-C and for the parking lights: SOR #150-02B. Getting both sets will set you back more than $100, but what is that on a project as sweet as this! Keep up the good work.......................

Funny how you guys talk about something and then it happens, looked what showed up today :)

Steve from Owens Export emailed me about a week ago after seeing the pics of those orange lenses. He was thinking the same thing, they gotta go!! He emailed me for a shipping address and got some in the mail ASAP.

Gotta work late this evening, but went home and installed them for fun, they look sweet on there.

Steve totally took care of me with the good guy deal on these ;) I guess he couldn't stand to look at them either. ;p

Steve also contributed to the project by mailing me something about a month ago, big time!! But, I am waiting to unvail that care package until there installed ;)

Thanks Steve

I had the same questions.. This thread on pirate should help out .. I think it's about the 3rd post.

Excellent information on that thread, thanks!

I am also a bit of an idiot, I went out and looked......I do have a marker light wire  I need to open my eyes and look sometimes.

I think the way I'm going to wire it is with Marker lights and taillights coming on in the first headlight postion switch and then Headlights coming on in the full out out postion.

Might not be totally the way the factory did it, but I want the marker lights on and the tailights on in the first postion like a new car.

I also want the front marker lights on when the headlights are on :)

Thanks, Matt

Matt, didn't you pick up one of the LV owners manuals that one of the guys had listed a few months back? It describes the light switch operation, kind of tough to understand and a little weird but it sounds like Dan got it right.

Not a lot accompished this evening. I had to work all weekend, got home a little late tonight, but figured I better spend a couple hours working on the lv.

I pretty much got the front end wiring done in the front bib. I used the EZ 21 headlamp plugs, since they were the same pattern as the old ones and they are color coded to the EZ wiring harness. Got all the marker and turn signals done, + the horn.

Hoping to get a start on the rear tailights tomorrow. I would like to get them hooked up to the rear wires, so that when my buddy comes back out and we start wiring the dash we can test the front and rear lights.

Have to see how it goes tomorrow night also. The movie 8 below is in town and I heard a rumor that the main character drives a 45lwb in it? Might have to go check that out just for the lwb ;)

It LIVES!

Awesome! Just got caught up on this thread. (Been up in Wisconsin for several weeks installing systems.) You have really made progress since my last read!

On your wiring, were you planning on wrapping the wire bundles or using loom? Either way www.waytekwire.com has everything you need to do it. The loom is available in black or gray and in many diameters. They have Tee fittings, wire breakout fittings, reducer fittings, end clips, and the rosebud clips to hold it all in place. They also carry those Adel clamps in stainless and have many other cable fastening gizmos. (I'm not affiliated, just a happy customer of theirs.)

FWIW I too believe the clear lenses look better.

(Also I totally forgot to tell you: Thanks for those captured nuts you sold and got to me so quickly! )

Yep, I plan on wiring looming it up. Thanks for the website link, I might use some of that stuff.

The wrapping and looming won't start until I am totally done wiring. Some of it will get pulled back out to get wrapped up, some will be done right in the vehicle. Hoping to get back after the wiring this Wed. or so. I might be doing a little tonight and tomorrow, but that is when my buddy's available and I want some help when we get into the dash.

I would love to wrap up the wiring this weekend, we'll have to see? I'm not sure if he is available, but if he is I think it could easily be done. Once the wiring is done and I have a running driving vehilce, the front clip is coming off. Start prepping the aprons, fenders and hood and get them jammed.

I am hoping to possibly be spraying the entire exterior by the end of April......we'll see how it goes ;)

Matt, my chassis is basically done and I'm moving onto the body work with my shop class. I'll be doing more work now on my own as I can only ask the kids to do so much.

Anyways, my question is on the body mounts. The front ones are all the "U" shaped ones like a '40 series mount but farther back they had the rubber mount encased in the channels and therefore not easily replaced when the bolts break as they did with you and me. It looks like you just cut those out and welded in plates with nuts on the back. Am I right? I was thinking of cutting the channels back slightly so that I can use the '40 mount in the same way as the front mounts since the channel is open at the ends anyways or did you weld the ends shut too?

You are correct sir. I cut out a section of that U channel, made a new piece with a 10mm nut welded on the back side and then welded the channel back in. The piece of U channel I cut out on all of them was always around 6" long.

I didn't weld the ends shut, but I did use SEM's patch panel adhesive and glued metal plates over the ends. I glued metal plates over any hole that was exposed. My reasoning was for rust protection.......I've said from day one the Minnesota road salt is going to get a crack at this lv so I'm trying to limit any openings where debris can get caught in.

Got back after the lv tonight, finally....

Mechanic buddy came over again and more wiring. We got about 3 hours in this evening, and actually quite a bit done, but doesn't look like much.

I went out to the 79 parts FJ40 and cut all the ends off the wiring harness for the switches and speedo head, left about a 6" lead on all of them. Had to get the factory Toyota service manual out and figure out all the wires on the back of the speedo harness first. We were able to get all the wires cordinated with the EZ 21 harness on the speedo head soldered and shrink wrapped up. Everything went pretty good, we fired up the turn signals, front and rear worked. We think the fuel gauge works, but need to bring home another 5 gallons of fuel tomorrow and pour into the tank. Oil pressure came up, but my buddy thinks the auto parts store gave me the wrong sending unit. As soon as you turn on the key it pegs the gauge, going to get another one tomorrow and try that first.

Moved onto the lightswitch, had a bit of a problem. Cruiserdan, if your reading this, you have a PM. I believe I am in need of a new 79 FJ40 headlight switch. We got the headlamps, taillamps and marker lights to fire up, but it doesn't work on the first marker postion. My buddy did a lot of head scratching and testing and came to the conclusion that something is wrong with the switch. So, going to see if a new OEM one is still available. The headlight dimmer on the column worked perfect, that was fun to see.

Hoping to start wiring fan and wiper switches tomorrow.

A little late in the game, But Shannon at www.redlinegaugeworks.com can take your complete speedo and put and color layout that you want, any speeds, any script ( I like the scull and cross bones text). He does all of Jay Leno's, TLC4x4.com and OverHaulins' cars. Check out his site for future projects.

I'm hoping in the next week or so to be gearing up for your part. If I am holding you up, let me know? Just havn't got to anything yet again that color :)

Thanks, Matt
