So, earlier today, I picked up my son and asked him to time the Yoda from the stop light for a 0 - 60 mph run. He used my iPhone, started the timer app.... And waited for the light to turn green....

So, off we go ! The 2F is turning the 33's over as forcefully as it can..... And 1 minute later, he stopped the timer and says, maybe next time you'll get to 60MPH dad. I only got to about 50 MPH....

So, what about the rest of you guys & gals?

It may be slow, but it can go anywhere....right?

My iphone timer goes further than 1 minute, Erik!! It goes long enough to get to 60... but, I seldom go that fast, unless I'm testing out something.

But, you're right... it can go anywhere I want to go!!

When I had the 6 in mine I never really paid attention to the 0 - 60 times, it was the max speed of maybe 40 on the freeway climbing hills pulling a pop-up tent trailer that killed me. Now after I put the V8 in even those times and speeds were a thing of the past, like most cars and trucks in my rear view mirrors. :)

Did you change your gearing to reflect the correct MPH for your 33's? Because on mine when I hit about 53-54 MPH I'm actually going 60 MPH on the GPS. If not you should run a GPS speedometer on your iPhone and have a separate timer.

Yes, we took that into consideration. I'm running a 3.7 R&P with 33's.. I've measured it several times and is 7-10 MPH different at 50MPH.

He was bummed we only made it to about 50 MPH (40 MPH on the gauge) in one minute.

I felt sure we would get there in less than :60 seconds though...

I usually have a cup of coffee between 0 - 60 mph, but I must say my cruiser is pretty fast!
Going downhill.

If it makes you feel any better- my friend finished putting a zz383 in his 68 camero today. We test drove it- it was faster than a fj40 by a long shot. Thing is- it died on the pass on the way home going up the pass due to starvation on the incline. It has power to spare, but it'll never go as fast as a fj40 on a dirt road( too shiny)or down a trail(atleast I hope not).
Ps- my fastest vehicle is my 04 highlander, if that tells you anything about my desire for speed.

I hit 60 once in my 42...gps measured and everything. I started to smell burning and decided to go back to 50. I have tried this in my 83 pickup with 22r and it is a pretty similar result!

If you're taking a full minute to hit 60mph there's something wrong.

It only takes mine about three gear changes to hit 60.
It will cruiser at 60 no problems...which is closer to 65.

:steer: I can cruise at 60, also.... Once I get there.

When I bought mine new in 78 I remember the Toyota advertised something like 18 sec.... but fast cars were doing 0-60 in 7 to 8 back then.
If the 78 vette did 0-60 in 7.5 sec and the new one does it in 3.5 that means if Toyota was still building the 40 it would do it in 9...right?
I think they're so much faster because the air is thinner now days. With so many breathing people on the planet and long winded politicians breathing up three times their share it makes sense

. . . I'm running a 3.7 R&P with 33's.. . . .

You have two strikes working against you. You are running 33" tall tires which actually raises your rear ratio and you also raised your rear ratio. Now I'm just throwing out this number but it's like you're running 3.08 gears with a not so powerful 6 cylinder engine. It may get better mileage but it's going to take you some time to get up to speed.

If you wanted more grunt then you needed to go the other direction with the rear gears like 4.56 or 4.88. Those gears coupled with the 33" tires would bring your acceleration back in line with factory numbers.

There are plenty that have the same combination in 60series....myself included.
and I'll tell you what, it pulls good to 65 as well.

I'm not saying that they can't run well but in this case it seems the engine must be a little and maybe a lot tired. The taller tires and shorter gears are working against it.

If an engine rebuild isn't in the immediate plans smaller tires or taller gears could bring some pep back into the picture.

Well, I found another variable.

I replaced the speedometer cable within the last 30 days, and apparently it is not reading the same as the previous cable.

Yesterday, my wife paced me and what I thought was 45-50 mph was 62+. The speedo cable is off by almost 15mph when showing mid 40's. I'll have to retime myself and use the GPS in the phone, maybe later this week.... For now we're relaxing :

My Yoda doesn't 'pull' so good; as it is now, 3rd is like a cruising gear - there is not much accelerating happening there.

Living in Charleston SC - on the coast - everything is flat, and the mountains are at least a 3 hour drive. For now, the 3.7 R&P and 33s make sense for >80% of my normal driving.

Compression was measured in the lower 110's. I did acquire a spare 2F - and plan to have it rebuilt. Hopefully, with the same pleasant results as @pngunme .
