I think that the Amazon delivery algorithm looks at a tool you need and decides "10 pm delivery will be fine...". Anyway, it finally arrived, and I readjusted the booster. To say that it was out of adjustment is an understatement.

I adjusted the nut down to the rod height minus 0.6mm. Reinstalled the master cylinder and bled the system. Took a test drive and stopped to get more brake fluid. Checked the hubs and they were cool. ~90 degrees, same as the rears.

I got it up on the highway and hit 65 MPH at 2800 RPM. 🎉🥳👯‍♂️

I think we figured out the issue.
Question is…

Will it run faster?

This is so satisfying… I feel like a long sigh of relief is due. Thrilled that what seems so puzzling now has a definitive solution.

Happy for you!

Glad you got it figured out. I would bet that your good ol F engine will last you for quite a while with those compression numbers. Now it’s time for a Sniper setup 😂😂

And don’t forget the Hyperspark !

....and thank you so much for jumping in early on the performance angle. Your carb helped immeasurably on "what system" is the problem.

While I agree about my "F", I am looking forward to a 2F that is more "period specific" and less Franken-tastic.

Glad to do it…sometimes a parts swap points you in a different direction. Whether good or bad is the real answer. By the way Matt, is Franklin Barbeque still around in Austin?

Ruling things out is just as important.

Yes, Franklin is still alive and well. He joined forces with another popular chef and started "Loro", great food and cocktails, dog friendly and no lines.

Glad you got it figured out, it will be a lesson you will never forget!

I've learned so much from this post and It has encouraged me to take another crack at my FJ40 which I put in storage after I couldn't figure out why it won't run right and or not run at all (distributor issues I'm guessing). Maybe some other day I suppose... Thanks again to everyone for contributing!

**In theory**, a lower compression ratio should be less efficient than the same engine with a higher compression ratio.

That said, I'd imagine it's within the signal to noise ratio of the already low MPG of a 40. 😆
*FJ40.
My HJ45 might not be fast but it's not doing 15mpg on diesel

After the deep dive into every orifice and componet required to tune that engine, it should be running like a top. Now the only thing left to do is drive it.

A little off topic but speaking of diesel, I filled my Chevy pickup with diesel today and it was $3.64 a gallon. Two weeks ago it was $3.22…over $85.00

Nice job!

Maybe you're joining the rest of the world soon?
I'm paying about $7 a US gallon which is pretty cheap after last year here.
My extended range tank will take about $220.
Feel better? ;)
