Worst Mod!!

On my first FJ40 - thinking I was going to keep my SBC conversion cool with the stock radiator in a town where the summer temps average 100. Oh! Then there were the sh***y through-the-fender headers and glass packs - lost track of the burns.

Heep seats, way too thick. Even when the sun visor is folded up, I can barely see under it. A set of celica seats are on this winters "to do" list.

Replacing my vinyl recaro racing seats with cloth seats. Although much more comfortable and easier riding they do NOT repel water. More like a water magnet.

Few years back I used Herculiner on the inside of the tube. That stuff is junk and removing it was a nightmare. Ended up using a ton of Brake fluid to get it loose to peel as much as I could. The rest cost me way too much at the blasters to have taken out.

Not a specific mod per se, but every time I have opted to go with aftermarket parts when there is a more expensive but OEM part available - I have lived to regret it.

Why do I think that aftermarket people with less than a thousand units built will have learned more about design, testing and supply chain management than a company that made millions of them and has literally 30 years of dealership warranty records to know what works and what doesn't.

Whenever I have used non OEM I have often ended up having to redo it, and usually spending more money. "As good as OEM" door seals are never as good as OEM.

Shortening my anti -inversion, greasable shackles before my new springs could settle ! Had to make longer replacements after my very first extended overlanding trip

Well, not my mods, but the PO....

Holley Truck Avenger carb. Very poor mileage, and no low end torque at crawl speed. Replaced it with a QuadraJet.

2.5" lift springs. Inadequate for the 33" tall tires. Frankly 2.5" springs are a waste of money. Eventually I'll wind up installing 4" springs or maybe a springover. For my purposes, the 4" springs make more sense.

12.50" wide tires. Given the 2.5" springs and stock wheel wells, and the cost of large heavy tire chains, these tires are too wide. 10.50" tires would have worked much better.

I've done a lot of regretful things over the years:
Rancho springs

Rancho 5000 shocks

Running those shock "boots" that collect water, sand, dirt, and everything else that causes the shock to rust

Longer "lift" shackles

The Toyota FJ40 "lean correction kit"

Cutting holes to mount a CB antenna. But this was pretty cool in the 70's.

LCAH correction kit

KC Daylighters - they draw way too much power for stock Toyota alternator

Aftermarket 2F fuel pump - after getting several warranty replacements, went back to OEM

Having undercoating sprayed under the body and fenders

Dual exhaust

On an SBC, using a "short" style water pump and early accessory brackets

Using a saginaw steering gear with flare type hose fittings rather than an o-ring style

Not really a mod, but a stupid move was buying an fj40 with carpet installed. I should have had a clue when there was no top on the cruiser, it was commonly parked outside, and we do get some rain from time to time.

Removing all the factory sound deadening material from the inside of the fj40 tub. yeah, it was annoying when working around it, but after taking hours to remove it with a scraper, and using a solvent to remove the remaining bits and pieces, then having to repaint the area because of scratches I created, I found out why Toyota put it there. It was now much noiser when driving and the floors got a lot hotter on my feet. Anything placed on the floor was more likely to melt on a long drive.

There must be more I'm forgetting.

worst mod to date is duplicolor rattle can bedliner on the roof. peeling hardcore along the edges. going to suck sanding it all off...

Worst I ever done as far as work involved was putting an 81 hardtop on a 74 tub and installing the rear hatch. All done now and works great. Would I do it again? Most likely not but was a good experience.

You're doing well if that's the worst thing you've had to do. Putting on a different top is mostly a bolt on affair. (I know, I know, you had some bumps along the road)

Front disks, rear disks, 350 swap, and building a new rear tub were all uglier IMO.

Rebuilding the 2f. Good fun and experience but could have spent the same and got a 3b turbo out of a Canadian truck and be looking at 30mpg not 12ish.

Aftermarket electric rear heater. Massive current drain for barely a trickle of warm-ish air. Returned it to Advance Auto, got my money back, but WOW was that a cold 600 mile road trip!

That turned out to be poor choice in mods.
Luckily only one fatality. Next morning came back to retrieve it and found a rattlesnake pinned
under the cage. I'm sure the last thing through his mind was.." that was a stupid mod"

I'm guessing lcwizard's "worst mods ever done" were the dents, buckles and broken glass suffered from the repeat rollovers.

Which is fair enough for the title of this thread. (Well at least to those of us who "think outside the square" )

Installing the Crane elec. ign. Worked ok for a couple of years. Spent the next two and a half years trying to figue out what was wrong with my cruiser. It had me baffled, finally yanked the whole thing and re-installed the old points and condensor..ahhhhhh! runs like a new one now!
