Rubberized undercoating!!

I can't believe I paid good money to cause my truck to rust faster?!?!?

My worst "mod" was selling my very first 72FJ40
because I could make about 5000 bucks, and "steal" a 78 with all sorts of mods and upgrades...young and stupid I was.
Stupid,Stupid,Stupid
from bullit proof to bullit holes
I'd like to have that fxxxstick move back

Making my own bumper.

Had to be the 6 single LED lights from "roundeyes" that I stuck under my cruiser for rock lights when i first got it. Those things are week and a waste of $$ IMO. I did end up pulling them off and used a couple for dash lights and another underhood which works pretty well.

Been several years since this thread has been bumped. Anyone have anything new they regret?

Jonny

I have not had my 40 long enough to regret doing anything yet -

However, I do have some regret for busting my knuckles on many bolts and sharp edges of rusty metal - I think a teatnus shot should be a pre-req for starting any level of work on these girls - I am spending so much time under her that my wife swears I am going to get an STD.....

I also have a lot of regret for all of the swiss-cheesing that previous owners did to this rig - I stare at various holes and wonder what the hell was that for... I think its got 60 some odd non factory holes throughout - thats almost 2 per year ??

The one thing I MAY regret is that I am going to do (99% sure) the inside of the top - with a white textured spray in bed liner - INSTEAD of putting in a factory headliner - I think it will help a little with the noise and will be durable - and will look better than the beautiful foam and glue thats there now....

Cheers

I'll second D'Animal's response of making my own bumper. I made my own rear bumper/spare tire carrier and jerry can or cooler carrier and while it works it I would have saved a lot of stress, time and down time of my rig if I had just bought the 4+ one and it probably would work better as I'm still making modifications to get mine right.

I know it's been said and said again, but Poly gas tank was definitely the worst cruiser-call I ever made. :whoops:

It went all out of shape and leaked easily and sucked in and out with pressure changes. I felt scammed.
But I bought a new OEM one and all is well in the world now. :zilla:

worst mod to my 84 fj60: Man-A-Fre header. Darn thing needs to be retorqued about once a day it seems. Added plenty of noise, but only adds anything in the way of umph at the top end of the rpms. Would have been much better off spending the money on just about anything else.
Are you running a Remflex gasket? That and some high temp thread lock might help. FWIW.

Edit: Just realized that post is from 2005

Worst mod

My worst modification would have to be using an add-a-leaf to cheaply gain lift on a stock FJ40 spring. I put them all the way around years ago and while I did gain the desired lift, the ride quality was terrible; Even with brand new shocks. Swapped that junk out after a couple of years of back pain for a set of HFS springs and now my 40 rides better than ever.

If you use an Add-a-leaf on an FJ40 and remove the two bottom OEM leaves when you install the AAL, you will have lift and a great ride. This is a standard mod that many have done, and I love it.

I can imagine a straight AAL mod (without removing leaves) would stink. Use the $50 pair of AALs sold on Amazon for Jeep Wranglers. I have only ever done it on the rear springs.

I've had my 40 for almost 7 years now and am now realizing that I'm becoming my own PO

Not to list everything I've regretted, but I ground down the windshield wiper arms to fit standard Jeep wiper blades, only to not have done it quite right and the blades don't fit and keep breaking so now I've spent a long time trying to find cheap replacement arms. Finally hit up a local cruiser parts garage sale and found some so I can go back to having real windshield wipers again! :)

The biggest mistake I've made was not spending more money on the initial purchase. That's water under the bridge now... Having replaced the floor, frame, front and rear ends, motor, trans, transfer case, hardtop, hood, fenders, seats (a few times), disc brakes on four corners, and ...

Next biggest: cutting corners when I wired a few things twenty years ago.

Bikersmurf, I can so relate. If I would have just not been so knuckleheaded about my $5k pricepoint and not been so impulsive about the first complete fj I found ... oh well, I guess we can't always choose when or how our love affairs begin :p

Kwik wire harness

it can be done, but don't do it. i ended up spending $200 to get my alternator converted to 1 wire chevy style at B&M (amped the brushes a little to throw more KC's:p)

oh, and i couldn't figure out how to get the truck to just run... so i had a buddy of mine at a shop do it.... $500 later, he's not my buddy. and i still did 50% of the harness myself

13" Dayton wire wheels with lo pro tires, helped the crawl ratio but gets hung up in the rocks.
