Move your wood closer to the front of the engine. It should give you a little more tilt advantage. Between the axle and tie rods or even ahead of the steering if you can fit it.

The axle is totally in the way of getting a straight shot up w/ the wood. I’ll see what I can do in the AM. Thanks for the suggestions.

I cut my valence a little bit to get it past - it’s not even noticeable. And it was easy and quick

Get em out of there...just like the last guy LOL. No one works on baby but you!

Why is your dizzy gear hanging up on something? It’s out, right?

I'd say place a temporary support under the transmission crossmember and loosen the eight bolts somewhat to let the engine/transmission/transfer case tilt a little more. Make sure to keep the bolts in the holes so that the crossmember can be bolted back up without having to align all the bolts in the holes.

Another question, is your exhaust pipe still connected at the exhaust manifold? Someone here on MUD said the exhaust pipe is often enough to support the rear of the engine, at least temporarily. That might be binding yours up, limiting the tilt.

Once I got the shaft out I’d lower the engine and do the bearing install w/ no pan inplace.
I honestly keep thinking of just pulling the gear off the shaft. I took the snap ring off but that woodruff key has it on very snug. I’d have to push the shaft back in and take it off w/ a puller. It would be way easier in some respect.

The one and only time I did this, this is exactly what we did. Much easier with the timing gear out of the way.

Some other thoughts:
-Get the distributor up and away.
-The rear of the motor has a bracket that attaches to the exhaust-that may be keeping you from gaining altitude.
-If you support the truck by the frame on jack stands, the axle drops down mostly out of the way
-If you remove the crossmember entirely, you can pick up the motor from above with your cherry picker hoist if hard to get to from below

Question: Are you buying a new camshaft? It's highly likely the old one was damaged at the #2 bearing when it spun

Impressive effort so far.

Silly man @Cruiserdrew, the opposing diz gear on the camshaft. Diz is out. Can’t do this w/ it in.
I’ll ponder pulling the gear.... I’ll look thru the book and make sure my puller is correct.
And @evilorgoodtwin ah, thanks for piping in... you musta had some truth serum w/ dinner eh?

You are either up late or early! I just got out and need some shut eye.

I don't think the timing gear is on all that tight. If it's off, everything else will be easier.

From the book it shows the camshaft out and then the gear is removed w/ a puller. Not sure how easily it’ll go to slide it back in fully so I can thread the puller bolts into the face of the timing plate.... and is that okay anyway? That’s how you had managed it?

And if the cam looked relatively okay, which so far it does, I was not going to replace it.

Wow!
Sucks to see that happened to your truck. Glad you spotted it when you did. Hopefully you can get it fixed and running.

Both these bearing are spun right? See scratch marks. I would get a cam kit with new cam/bearings/lifters.

Yeah and I’ll pull the money from my ass G. Jesus, settle down till I get the thing out.

Valance off. Ran out of bags for screws so pulled out my crunchy Mom mason jars... Upon further inspection crossmember can’t come unless I pull the front body mounts. Piss. Gonna cut and bend.

Just took a little trim, bend and file.
My apologies @g-man for my snarky response. Idk will see about a new shaft. I haven’t done the penny rub yet @FJACS but journal 2 and 3 have visible scoring.
I will say G that I’m thankful you prompted me to make that apron. I’ve used it not only to protect my skin but to protect the metal of the truck while bending the piece back w/ channel lockers. And as you can see the gear as well.

Don’t pull the gear.
I won’t. Looks and read its pressed on so screw that and hence why I decided to just cut.

Nicely done! Your nose saved your ass

If your buying a used cam - I think you are based on the photos - try and get one with the gear on. Someone reading with a parts motor may offer one up. I think I said this already, but see if you can get the lifters with it - in order.
