The horn situation is really frustrating. It's the kind of thing that makes you want to kick the car to the curb. Before you do, there's always this:

I found this thread I will have to do some of the troubleshooting/testing on there:

Horn problem on an '82 fj40

Slightly different with a 74 vs 82 but I’d imagine the concepts are the same. Maybe I can be lucky and get the horn whisperer @bj40green to help me... ;)

Heading out for a quick road trip with my Land Rover friend and decided I’d setup my hammock in the cruiser since it will only be one night. Had to shorten up the hammock but otherwise works great! We’ll see how my body feels about it lol.

Mike,

When I swapped in a newer steering wheel, the horn (one have one) didn’t work... I found the contact didn’t quite touch the ring... I bent the contact enough to ensure good “contact”. Fixed.

Seems like you’ve tried everything else...

Thanks Danny! Unfortunately the contact is good between the steering wheel and the contact ring as I bent it to make sure it was contacting. I’m going to try some more troubleshooting soon.

Of the three decals the one in the middle sure looks like what is used by the South Albany High School Rebels. I don't keep up with any sports, especially high school, but I'm of the age where I helped build the cabinets in that school. And that school has been there since sometime in the mid 70's.

Don - they probably mimicked the Oakland Raiders logo since that is what that sticker is... :)

Infiltrated a Land Rover get together... definitely out of place with all the Landies. My hammock setup worked great other than it being a bit awkward to get into the sleeping bag since it was bigger than my shortened hammock. I have some ideas for a sweet setup which will allow the sleeping bag to lay flat and should be easier to get into. And more anchor points to spread the load. More to come on that hopefully.

Little downpour while last night stayed nice and dry.

Well, this was how I was thought of... actually not really everyone was very cool and when they approached me they quietly said they really liked my Land Cruiser don’t tell anyone I said that. This particular Rover was a true military spec model complete with helicopter lifting points. Guy works for Advanced Adapters. Apparently even associates with a Land Cruiser guy we know and love @orangefj45... ;)

Snapped a shot on the way out. Too short a trip, but good times! See it’s not just a pavement queen lol.

Not a very exciting post - decided I needed more mirror real estate and I had these already so why not? And no the passenger side isn’t convex sorry.

Oh maybe a little excitement... wife pretty much approved getting A/C for the cruiser! Sweet mother need to get that ordered up ASAP before she changes her mind. Leaning towards the Old Air Products model since it does not impact the leg room on the passenger side, looks like it was meant to replace the stock heater unit, has cable pull controls, and there are some documented installs here. Will use the Vintage Air stuff under the hood since it is land cruiser specific. Very exciting!!! I will make sure everything is bolt on so that in the event I sell this (bwahahahahaa!!!) it can be changed back to stock.

Okay making some progress on the A/C. Talked to Old Air and they are super helpful. I'm narrowing down things and think I've got a pretty good setup. They actually make a louver that is almost a perfect fit for the ash tray. Since I'm not a smoker seems like a perfect option to get a louver into the dash without cutting. Skews some to the passenger side but the louvers can be aimed over. The other option is to make the louvers for the passenger a single louver and then get a small louver right above the parking brake lever. I'd position the single passenger unit far right to match up with the driver side one.

Thinking this maybe for above the parking brake.

Anyone have any thoughts on the layout? I will have to re-work my speaker location - who knows I may end up doing a kick panel style speaker or bury these farther back. Will have lots of room with that big duct of the picture. @UZJ40 you think with the amount of air these units blow the pictured setup would be good for the driver? @Honger I just found your thread on this too I had forgotten - your thoughts on this setup? Thanks!

Okay, pretty much finalized my A/C louver setup. Going with the below. The speakers obviously will be relocated - passenger side should be pretty easy to hide higher up in the dash. The driver side will be interesting... The A/C louver pods I chose are pretty small - basically 3" x 3" with a curved bottom and all black so should be fairly discrete. And they will sit back a little compared to the mockup. The in-dash louver should look clean as it even covers up the screw holes for the ashtray. I wish I could do @lelandEOD's sweet setup where he cut into his pads and dash, but that scares me since this is a very original cruiser and I want things to be able to be reversed easily if it needs to be reversed.

Finally got my suspended bedding material. What a smoking deal on that webbing mat - on sale for $42. Normally $269! I added a box of sharpie markers to bring my total to $49 for free shipping. The mat is 8’x9’ and says can carry 1,100#. I had to fold it in half and then fold about 2’ on the length to get it the right size for the cruiser. It’s about 4.5’ wide by 6’ long when folded.

I replaced a few bolts with hangers/anchors. Used grade 11 bolts and load rated hooks. Probably way overkill but who wants to crash down in the middle of the night? Anchor points are at the top of the A pillar (removed one screw and replaced with bolt and washers to secure the anchor): one at the B pillar on the passenger side (could add one on the opposite side if necessary); at the rear I replaced one of the hinge bolts and then have an anchor at the C Pillar? Anyhow it is rock solid! I set down a camping mat so there is some surface area on the webbing. A sleeping bag and pillow are all I need now! I have a battery powered fan near my feet blowing on me since it is a bit hot.

I know a bit crazy but for about $60 I’ve got a nice sleeping area if I don’t want to setup a tent. It is really quite cozy I’ve been laying in it now for about 30 minutes.
