i did some searching around but couldnt find a definite answer.. so im wondering what the bolt pattern and offset is for a 76 fj-40?

im trying to find some 17 inch wheels at a junk yard, as i have four 17 inch snow tires... anyone done anthing like this?

yes its done all the time

6 on 5.5 is the pattern

offset what ever you like, stock ithink is 3.5 or 4 something like that. i would get 2.5 looks better
i picked some up for 15 a piece.

I'll second the Summit site for finding wheels. I bought Cragar Soft 8's for my '77. Under $50 each, powdercoated and the size that you want with alot of backspacing options.
