Why are the 80 series more expensive than the 100 series

I really have not seen this where I am at in Ohio, 100's are more expensive than 80's the majority of the time in my experience.

What are you basing this on?

Because they're better.:D J/K.:) I believe they're more sought after due to their solid front axles and available locking front and rear differentials. People are willing to pay a premium price for 'em which makes prices go up.

currently there are more than a hand full of 80's out there for under 8k. I have yet to see a 100 for less than 8k.

I have seen listed "dealer prices mind you" some 96-97 80's (120k-140k) same price or more than high mileage 98-99 100's (170k+).

Of course do the dealers get those prices for either.. doubt it.

I would never get rid of my 80 ever but if I could afford to buy another cruiser outright for trips and around town I'ld get a 98-99 100 series

Sometimes i see some 100 98 model for 10 k the 80's are 15 k that is why im wondering

Pretty simple some dealers just think they are worth so darn much when anyone looking for one wouldn't be that dumb.

I have seen a few 80's from some place in Irvington NJ (not that great of an area for being in let alone 4x4in) got for 12-15k asking.. for what just because a 80 has 80k miles but no different than mine except its a 96 instead of a 94 and I got mine for 7400 with 100k. :meh:

honestly when i was looking last summer the average to above average stock 80 was going for around 6500-9000 dollars with under 140k miles (what i was looking for). the 100's i was looking at (98-2001) were priced around 8900-14000 with around the same millage.. every now and again you'll see an 80 priced way out of bounds by a dealer or a private seller who either over valued it or has a ton of mods and is looking for the right buyer, but on average the 100's are more expensive where i live.

it depends .. if I want it to make a nice off road Toy to me .. 80 sure .. but if it's going to be more mall crawler and ocational family vacation " van " then 100 ..

Nos saying 100 are not very capable ( are Land Cruiser after all .. ) but I'm feeling ( personal opinion ) as 80 body the max size that would do decent in the trails .. plus the solid axle on front allowing you go for big tires and good flex ..

Thats a very safe answer,, me myself will go for the 80 even the price are high you can use it at mall and it rocks off the road ,, 15k is not bad for an 80 this rig is a legend and 1 of the best 4x4 that ever come out of earth just imagine 15 years from now the 80's will be a collectible item and for sure the price will be high becouse of its popularity right now..just dreaming

Okay now my question is if you have 15k available and you found an 80 and 100 with the same millage and same price which rig will you buy and why?

A nice FZJ 80 with "lower" miles would probably be in the $7-10k range, while similar mileage early 100 series might be in the $10-13k range. So, if they are priced the same, as in your scenario, there is something fishy going on.

80s are definitely cheaper than 100 series as a rule. There are a few idiots who think their stock 80 is worth $15k+, but they are not worth that, period. And there are a few 100 series that are beat up with high mileage that might be priced under $10k, but in general an 80 is cheaper than a 100.

Ditto. Unless it's a Craigslist scam.

The 100s I see are more expensive than the 80s I see.

Damn, I need to save up and get into the 100 Series market before this trend changes! I would say the prices are getting closer to even and if Gas prices do go to $5 this Summer I would expect that many more 100's would go up for sale than 80's making them less in demand and cheaper.

i have to agree with the OP that 80s are holding their value better than 100s

when comparing mileage and age 80s are considerably more expensive....

but i believe its b/c 80s are better :flipoff2: solid front axle and a real land cruiser engine!!

hello mudders can you please explain i know you guys are expert,, most of the time i saw 80's are more expensive than the 100's why?tnx

Supply and demand...?

Good Condition 80's are obviously less in supply as the demand didn't drop all that much to the true off-roader...

The longer I keep the 80, kinda means I'll hopefully end up with a 'newer' Cruiser in the future.... AARP edition? :flipoff2:

If you spend 15K on an 80, it had better be turbo'd, low mileage, lift, bumpers, head gasket replaced, stereo upgraded, etc., etc.

In other words, turnkey.

If you spend this much on a stock 80, you are a complete sucker.

If you want to trade me a 100 with the same mileage as my 80 I'd be down. I love my 80 but if you want to trade I'll get a solid front axle put in the 100 and be years and power ahead.

This is simply not true unless you only compared 97's to 98's. But be aware, they sold almost 4x the amount of 100's than 80's in the US.
