As far as the holes for the flares in the body, how did you patch them? The aluminum tape method? Did anybody weld them up?

Thanks again.

I taped but I have found if you go through the trouble of cutting out all the metal fillers you can find someone to weld it up for pretty cheap. But the time is in cutting all the different size little filler pieces.

Getting ready to remove my flares soon, and have been giving a lot of thought to the u-pol raptor spray-on product.

The problem with the color versions on Line-X is it bumps up the cost something fierce. Head to your local dealer and get a quote with black versus the Line-X XTRA. I got black on both 80s, granted the 91 has the home job:grinpimp:

DIY Herculiner on the silver 91. Filled the flare holes with alum tape, roughed up the paint with a green scratch pad from the kitchen. $75 for the Herculiner kit, masking tape and paint tray, and had enough for 3 coats on the flares, lower doors and hood lip and still have a 1/4 can left:meh: If you just wanted to do the flare area and no rockers or doors, the $29.90 can of Herc would do 2, maybe 3 coats

I really like your '91. Great looking truck. Good points and thanks for the info. The black just at the fenders looks like it belongs. I might just copy you.

BTW, you don't really have a Cummins in that thing do you?

That is sooo not worth it. Why put something back on that will get knocked off again in a trip or two. Plus how are you going to put the rubber seal that goes between the fender and the body back on top of liner?

Hadn't really thought about it that way. I was thinking that I'd rather have it knocked off over shredding metal. The seal escapes me still.

Haven't lined the panel below the headlights yet.

Yes, he does. 3.9L 4-cyl (4BT).

Here's my truck with Line-X. I know, it's not white :flipoff2:

I'm up the road in North Caddilac south of New Bern, I'll let you know if I get down Greenville way and take Slowpoke down there and let you take a close up look. Always up for an SC road trip:D

Anyway, the Herculiner was real easy to put on and turns out real sharp if you take your time with the prep work, scuffing and taping, just don't get it on your hands, it don't want to come off.

And, oh yeah, got the Cummins in the 94;) Bought it that way I must admit, but LOVE IT!

Phrogg4evr,
They are nice looking rigs!
Got a question for you. Compare Line-X with Herculiner, which one is harder? And looks better? I have Line-X on my roof since I removed the roof rack. I think it's pretty thick (more weight) but it's really hard. Off course more $$.

I'm also debating if I should do the lower doors part or just the fender flares part. Do you have any comments since you have both pattern? BTW, the white one looks REALLY nice. I want to do the lower doors part only for protection. What do you think?

Thanks,
JMZ-

Well, the Line-X is going to be sturdier and a helluva lot thicker. If you want the one that's going to be bulletproof, go Line-X. On that note, LineX will be more expensive. The quote I got from the local Line-X dealer to do the flare area was $125 for the front flares and $150 for the rear flare area, $275 total.

So, you have $75-80 for Herculiner or $275 for Line-X.

As far as looks, both look pretty good. Line-x will look the best if you add the UV protection, it will keep it from becoming dull. I've only had the Herculiner for a short period of time, do the jury is out on how it will look after a longer stretch. The PO used what I think is Herculiner on the inside tub of my 40, and it's a few years old. Still looks pretty good, granted it's covered with carpet not exposed top the elements aside from rain when I get caught topless:grinpimp:

As far as the lower door area and rockers, if you have sliders with side tube protection, that will keep the doors and rockers from getting beat up. If you are in a no slider configuration, that will offer you a little protection for the sheet metal in case you rub up against something:meh:

I like both looks, but if I had sliders and had no trail rash on the doors and rockers, I'd stick with the flares only, maybe would to the nose area

Hope this helps

Great looking truck. How do you like the BFG KM2's? I absolutely love mine. They are very quite for a MT and look great on the truck. They grip very well offroad although I have not had a chance to air them down and really get into some gnarly stuff. Right now, I consider them the perfect tire for a daily driver that see both on and offroad use.

Thanks! Yeah I really like the KM2s. Much quieter then the old BFGs. I doubt they'll last as long though... I had over 45k on my last set before I replaced them. So far I've been happy with them offroad and I would agree that they are an ideal daily driver MT.

Yeah but sometimes those flares cause the body damage. I have a dent in the very bottom of my front fender at the hole for the flare. I came down off a rock and the flare stayed on and showed no damage but pushed in a dent at the bottom clip.

I've seen a write up on bedlining the roof like this, but can't seem to perform the right search for it. Not to hijack, but can anyone find it? I'd like to do it with white bedliner when I remove the OEM rack.

Well the only line-x I have is on the hood and roof but I plan on more!

Are you talking about the engine hood blackout or the roof once the factory rack is removed. SOCALFJ did a vinyl application on his hood. Several of us have done the roof after rack lining. Some have used commercial products, some of us have gone DIY with Durabak.

Can you be more specific in your wants?

I did both my flares and roof with Durabak. Here's my write up.

Lots learned from many before me on use of Durabak, etc.
