Which oil are you using?

Have used Rotella 15w40 in my 1970 FJ40, but now am using Valvoline VR1 20w50 in my 1988 FJ62.

Been over a year since this thread. Any new oils people are using? I was looking at the Lucas Oil Classic oil but it says not to use on vehicles with cats. Anyone using this oil with cats?

I’m using the 15w50 Mobil 1 synthetic that has a very high zinc content. Also using the 15600-41010 oil filters that I sell.

5,000 miles on this OC on it and it runs and sounds great. Quietest oil I’ve used in this 2F at 313,000 miles. It’s popular for use on air cooled Porsche’s solid lifter motors that cost many times that of what my 2F costs.

It’s also cheaper and lasts longer than my vr1 that I was very proud of. If I drove it less, I’d still be running the vr1.

It says not to use with CATs because the higher zinc will degrade the CAT faster, and the newer aftermarket CATs are not made to last very long. But what's cheaper, a new CAT every 50K miles or an engine teardown ?

Lucas is what I use, but the Magnum 15w-40 HDD Zinc isn't as high as the Classic, but sufficient.

Can’t remember if I did rotella or delo 400 on my first oil change of ownership.

Just tried 15w/40 Rotella T4 in mine plus a bottle of ZDDP Plus... The rig seems to like it so far, at least much better than the 5w30 Toyota Oil

x2 I'm running the same w/zddp. I had 10-30 and it was a little thin. Zinc is important for the camshaft. Castrol Edge has zinc in it, mobile 1 doesn't. In fact most new oils don't. Spoke with a vintage mechanic about 10 years ago who had a 60 camshaft on his wall that was rounded out, said it was because of no zinc...his words stuck with me.

@Morgan Evans do some more research on Mobil 1 full syn 15w-50

^^^
@Morgan Evans I do not know for sure about other Mobil syns, but I don’t think they they do. Bad on newer cars with Cats.

It's not so much the viscosity as it is the zddp levels. As mentioned, a 15w50 M1 is a good choice mainly because one can find it almost anywhere, even 7-11. TDT M1 is very good, too.

Should I be running 15-40 in my 89 FJ62

Not a bad choice generally and will save you some $$ over Mobil1. I run Chevron Delo 15w-40 in my FJ40 and FJ60. The price is right at Costco and it's high quality and works fine. But Ive run Mobil1 15W-50 in my FJ62 since I got it in 2008. Mobil says it designed for flat tappet motors and I believe them.

I just switched to this today, Finished the oil change, ran to get some lunch, and I can hear and feel a difference. I appreciate everyone and there information!

It really quieted my valve train. I’ve been happy with it. I ran the last change for 5,000 without issue.
