Here's one to make the purists cringe. I run standard castrol GTX 20w50 in my '82 fj60 with estimated 350k+ miles on original engine (in hot hot south texas) since I got the rig almost 3 years ago. No additives. It leaks a quart every 2 months or so if I drive frequently, so partially self changing. Last oil change 2 years ago.

I may try rotella at some point in the future, but I just stocked up on more GTX in anticipation of changing the leaky oil pan gasket.

Just an FYI for you cheap-azz Cruiser heads (like me)

At O'reilly's. $35 for TWO gallon jug. Syn blend. 1500-2000 ppm ZDDP.

Part#: JT8-15-50-2

With a WIX or Baldwin filter, you've got a $50 quality oil change for your obsolete motor (including Gubbament tax)

@Spike Strip : how do know this oil is 1500-2000ppm ZDDP?

the PDF just states " Zinc and zinc compounds 113706-15-3 <2%"

so if something is less than 2.. it could be .5, .8 yadda.. are you going off of the fact that its less than 2% but also CJ-4 Rated? just curious how you came up with that number..

Ok I'm ready for the myriad of replies here.... but I'm gonna ask anyway. Seems like everyone has a different answer, I've read all 22 pages of this thread.

For some reason for the first time I'm interested/concerned with putting "good"/the "right" oil in my cruisers.

I live in the Pacific Northwest and rarely see temps drop below 30 in the winter where I am specifically. My 60 has about 180K on the dial and no issues as far as I know.

What's the oil to use that I can get at one of the big auto parts stores that isn't going to brake the bank? Not opposed to buying oil "X" and throwing an additive in either if that's what's best.

I've been using Rotella 15w40 for 3 years now. You can get it at Walmart for ~$13 for 4qts.

O'reilly's 50w non-synthetic generic motor oil. Supposedly, anything over 50w is not regulated and has plenty of zinc for our older engines.

Royal Purple 15-40, year round. It gets hot & cold in North Texas more than most people think. I'm very pleased with Royal Purple and I change my oil once a year as well. I average under 1000 miles a year.

uhhhhhh straight 50W is WAY too thick for normal startup and running below 30* temps as the original poster stated he experiences....

@Spike Strip : Mobil 1 15W-50 Full Synthetic Motor Oil 5 qt. - Walmart.com

Mobil 1 15w50 is only 25 bucks a 5 qt jug at walmart, and has 1200-1300 PPM zinc.. only 124ppm less than the more spendy lucas stuff. plus dont have to have it shipped.. Thoughts?

also of note for those who add ZDDP to their oils:

I've added 1 bottle of ZDDP Plus to Castrol high mileage 10w30 and blackstoned it with and without the ZDDP. It netted me an increase of ~475ppm in Zinc, and ~325ppm in Phosphorus.

In theory you could toss in a bottle of that to the Mobil 1 15w-50 and push your ZDDP levels up to ~ 1675 ppm ish.

Thoughts?

Well, same as before. Adding zddp brings up the cost. I'd rather just have it already in the oil. But any of the oils listed above are good. Frequent changes are better, even if low mileage. I try to do mine every 6 months or so, as condensation in the oil forms acids. What matters is how long between full warm ups, not so much mileage on the oil.

Think im gonna try that M1 15w50 next fill and blackstone it. see how things look.

will report back in 3000 miles
