Running Chevron Delo 15w-40 in my 2F. $13/gallon and plenty of ZDDP

Just a reminder for those who run a catalytic converter that needs to actually function well enough to pass emissions tests...

The whole reason that the percentage zinc and phosphorus (ZDDP) has been reduced in the latest motor oils is because it has recently been "discovered" that those two compounds accelerate the death of the cat.
So adding a ZDDP additive will not play nice with the cat.

straight 60 weight in my old V8 cause that sucker leaked and burned oil like a diesel. at one point in time it was pretty much straight 80/90 gear oil until I figured out it stank when it burned for about 2 tanks of gas until I added more.

This might be too geeky for some, but I ran the Chevron Delo 400LE through this handy dandy performance tool. Not sure why but they have taken down the tool for passenger car oils and only left the commercial version up so I could not stack up the Mobil 1. (Hopefully, they are just revising the passenger version and it will return later.)

If you really want to know how good an oil should perform plug in the certs, which the Delo has a crap ton of, and map it on this chart. Pretty cool tool for those that want to wade through all the BS out there.

Attached is the completed Delo 400LE map. They also have a syn version of this oil but it has reduced ZN and P so no need to look at it further for me. There is a glossary in the link if you want to read up on the categories.

Rotella 15w40. Will be sending this batch of oil to Blackstone for analysis.

Also, in my 911 I would run BradPenn, it is highly regarded in the aircooled world and has a high level of ZDDP (which most old porsche guys wouldn't run cats anyway, so that was never an issue).

The Oil Warehouse

Roughly $75 depending on the weight for anyone looking for another option.

The M1 15w-50 is currently in my FJ60, however for the winter I am thinking of changing it due to the weather. I live in NJ, and we have cold winters. I was thinking of using M1 5w40 for the winter. Any opinions on that idea?

Looking at the numbers, that's a reasonable plan. I run the 15w-50 all year, but my coldest start is around 30 degrees.

Another thought for really cold places is the Mobil 1 0W-40 with 1/2 bottle of the Redline break in additive. That would get your Zn level into the 1400-1500 range.

And for full disclosure, I should say, my FJ60, FJ62 and FZJ80 all get the Mobil 1 and no additives. But my FJ40 with an '85 2F gets the Chevron DeloLE 15W-40 (from Costco) and usually some Redline Break in additive. I can't tell that it makes any difference.

5w40 looks like a good choice. You could also run half 0w40 mixed with half 15w50. People on bobistheoilguy site mix their own concoctions all the time

Pretty excited for this oil change. I've got a non US OEM flter that weighs about 3 lbs and 2 gallons of CAT DEO 15w40 291-3860 waiting for me at my local supplier.

Trying this over a denso filter and Mobil delvac.

The shop that did some work for me a few years back suggested Castrol GTX 10W30. I believe that others are using it also. I've had no problems (in that area) so far but I'm always looking for something better if it'll improve engine life.

Again, 1200 to 1300 ppm zinc compounds as most of the above listed oils contain, is not "plenty" of zddp. It's the minimum amount and is rapidly depleted. That's why you need at least 1700 (or more) to start so it's still at the minimum by the time you get around to changing the oil.

How fast does it deplete? Linear curve?

Would love to see anyone's oil analysis. Start and ending ZDDP content after 3k miles or so

ok so im getting some work done on my 62 and having them do a oil change while they're at it.. I've also read all 23 pages of this thread and this is what i've got....

Ive got the oem toyota filter i got from beno... Two gallons of Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15w 40 for diesel... I also ordered the Eastwood ZDDP oil additive 4 fl oz... Do I just have the whole bottle of additive put in?? Is this all even correct???! I'm in NYC where the winters can be from 20-45 degrees... is the 15w 40 ok for all winter and summer use??

This site and its members have always been such a great resource but man.... this oil thread enormous and REALLY CONFUSING!!! Thanks in advance!

what is the direction on the bottle? it'll say how much to add per qt

I have better things to throw away my money on, but it's good to see the choices out there.

by the time you add a zddp additive, you're not far in price. plus its cheap enough online with free shipping.

ill blackstone it and see how it holds up compared to the Castrol GTX I tried with a zddp additive that performed POORLY.

The dilution will depend on the concentration of the zddp additive and the level of zddp in the base oil - that's why I try to just use a proper oil to begin with.

If you use something like a 1200 ppm base then I'd follow the additive bottle recommendation or even cut it down a little. Too much ZDDP is as bad as too little.

Additive says good for 4-6 qts... Since I will be doing 2 gallons (8 qts) I'll add two bottles of this eastwood zddp additive. Thats not too much zddp if you include the amount in the delvac 1300 right? Still weirds me out to use oil used for diesel engines for my gas engine but i trust MUD information and its never failed me so far!!!
