Since OEM is discontinued, I'm looking for the correct Aisin that fits. In doing a search, I've read that the WPT-063 is the right one, but Amazon says that it doesn't fit the 1977.

Just installed the Airtex AW9493 (because it was listed as the correct one for the 1977) and it has been a disaster. Never again.

Recommendations?

I will try to remember tomorrow and look..I got one spare one (Aisin) ...I remember to order it from Cruiser corps and it was a wrong one so I had to sent it back and replace it...

The WPT-063 is the correct unit for a '77 FJ40 that has a fan clutch and doesn't run an oil cooler. I have one as a back-up to my Airtex AW9493 that is currently installed.

Would you mind explaining why the Airtex was a disaster for you?

Not-so WAG that the installer did not remove the rear plate and seal it themselves before installation.

Actually I can think of another reason. A number of aftermarket pumps have too much casting in the bottom corner where the oil cooler line may or may not be. The excess casting can interfere with the timing cover causing the pump not to bolt down flush to the block. :headbang:

Exactly as @65swb45 stated, I had to grind the housing to make the pump clear the timing cover. Expecting a quality bolt-on product, I didn't notice that it didn't fit properly until I had sealed the gasket and bolted the pump onto the engine block. Naturally, removing this ruined the first gasket, so I had to make another one and start all over. Once that was done and I installed the pump nice and flush onto the block, the pump leaks coolant between the rear plate and the pump body. The pump's installation instructions do not call for inspecting, tightening or sealing this plate in any way.

I've done several Aisin water pumps in the past and never had a single issue.

By the way, the seller won't accept the pump back as a return because the housing had to be modified. I don't have a lot of free time, and this was a huge waste of it. I'm looking forward to getting the Aisin on.

@cruiseroutfit, it looks like the one that I need (1977 FJ40 with fan clutch and no oil cooler) is Part# EGW61070 (Fits 8/76'-1/79' 2F W/Out Oil Cooler) - $105.50. Correct?

Sounds right to me

Little bit of an update...with nothing to lose on this Airtex, I decided to torque the bolt around the leaking section of pump housing way tighter than spec. It appears to have squeezed it enough to stop the leak at the plate. I'm going to give it another day or two and see what happens, @cruiseroutfit.

@cruiseroutfit, I just placed an order for the Aisin. Airtex is leaking again. Cant wait to go back to OEM.

Makes me 2nd guess my Airtex installation a few years ago.....Oh well, if it fails, I'll install the Aisin.

We've got your back if you run into a need :D

Any chance you have a second one on the shelf? I also have a 77’ without oil cooler. Let me know and I’ll send payment.

You betcha!

Give us a ring (801-563-1277) or shoot us an email (info@cruiseroutfitters.com) with your shipping address and I'll calculate a total for you. Thanks!
