Hey Now, I have been trying to find a replacement Windsheild for my BJ42, for some time , as it is really pitted. I have tried the local Glass Companies, and Toyota, they want almost 500$US .
I have been told that I should follow a State Truck, and do the insurance thing, but here in RI, they do NOT allow for glass replacement through insurance, can anybody help with this dilema?
Thanks in advance, stephen

it is just flat safety glass, use the old one as a pattern and get a high end glass shop to make one for you...here it is $100 installed...

cheap its noncurved safety glass, somone should be able to cut a piece, close to you

Welcome. Where abouts in RI are you? I'm over in the Bucket......Umm I mean Pawtucket

Let me know where you end up going. I am going to end up needing to get one for my project.

Hey Rhode Island is a big state after all. It take a whole hour to drive from one end to another. :grinpimp:

I got mine cut at a glass place here for 150.00 installed. Just make sure your gasket is in decent shape.

Glad to make your acquaintance "Leaping Dear"!

I am in the South part, nwpt, Nk, and the like.

My gasket is in great shape, but i have been told by some car experts that the reason it is so exspensive is that it is FLAT, as no one makes it anymore,lol....go figure.
I have contacted a few specialized glass places, and either thay have not returned my call or were not able to quote me a price.
Thanks, ill keep trying-BTW "leaping dear", since you live in the north , i know there are lots of glass places where you live , could you do some research too? thanks in advance, Stephen.

That's :censor: BS. I just bought an FJ40 windshield last week from the local Toyota stealership. They gave me the jobber price, which was $59 and change. Try another Toyota dealer, and another til you find someone who won't jerk you around. Even if you pay full retail, it's only $79.

I had a shop here in Meeshigun cut one from flat stock off of the old one they pulled out. Gave them a new OEM gasket and it was like 140 out the door Installed.

This was about 5 months ago. Any glass shop should have flat safety glass.

Toyota doesn't have the early windshields anymore (pre 76, Ordered 2 that were suppose to fit my 74 but they were an inch too wide, orderd 2 because the parts guy thought the first one may have been mislabeled) got one cut at a glass shop for $75. Toyota charge me $168 for the windshield with a discount.

Now, you BOTH know that RI is just a large overgrown MA county right? :poke:

I am also in the market for a new 'shield would you guys be interested in having a few cut if I can get a discount from the local GOOD glass place? I have a cracked one for a template.

As stated before. Any glass shop that handles auto glass can do it (cut it). Had mine replaced a year ago. $100 installed. Flat glass is no issue. They have stock on hand. Give them the old and they can cut in a heartbeat. Old gaskets are brittle, I got a new one from toyota and had them use it. (Mine had separated at the junction) He said he had an aftermarket and was surprised I brought one. My '71 is splined and I figured was rather unique but who knows...

late model windshield, toyota part number 56111-90303 are $79.54 suggested retail. I just bought one 12.10.2006 for discount and it was shipped UPS intact to my door. for 1981 (and really all bottom mount wiper motor)

If your dealer wants $500, I'd call Torrence hq and complain.

Okay you Cape Dweller, just stay in P Town and leave RI out of this. However you probably should have choosen to build a Heep for your "life partner". :flipoff2:

Just kidding. I would seriously be interested in going in on a group buy if we can get a deal. I will see if I can stop by and check out a couple of glass shops. Sawcutmill who ever told you that it was more expensive because its flat is full of it. All they have to do is cut it out of a flat piece of glass. I have a cracked one to use as a template too but is that how they do it?

Check out any glass shops, they should be able to make it. The safety glass is just two layers of glass with a piece of plastic laminate in the middle, so it don't fly apart when it breaks.

Any glass shop should have some. They simply lay yours on top of it, trace it out and cut it. If you have ever done window installs, you can do the install yourself. The windwhield is pretty much like doing any of the back windows on a 40. Get some good black butyl sealant, I get mine at NAPA. Put a bead in the outer lip that goes to the body and one in the lip around the glass. Factory manual may even have a bit on window removal/installation as I recall.

Another thing with the glass. I was given the choice on mine years ago for clear glass or tinted. I choose clear as it was stock. But most all modern cars have a slight green tint to the glass to reduce glare. It actually makes a little difference, but I wanted stock apperance.

Years ago, I had the windshield and back window cut, I installed them. Glass cost me 120 bucks for both.

oh baby-jesus, here we go with the geigh P-town jokes... you REALY want to start taunting me? 'cause I got more RI ones... (theres a hell of alot more to make fun of being the main reason)

is this for your 74? would it be the same size as my 72's cracked donar?

I would assume that the two would be the same. Do you have your wipers at the top?

RI vs. MA? C'mon we would be trading jokes for weeks. :D

I can make fun of both cause I was born in RI, grew up in MA, moved back to RI and have plans of moving back to MA.

So, you realy never left the state of MA then right? :flip:

yea wipers at the top. Ill talk to the glass guy today or tomorow.
