So I'm seriously looking to buy this FJ45 from a guy here locally.
Hes had it for about 12 years and has been slowly restoring it back.
It sat inside a barn the whole time and is completely rust free!

What it has:
Factory power steering
Brand new toyota disc brakes on the front.
Shackle reversal

Motor starts right up and sounds great.

He has extended the cab slightly to give just a bit more room also instead of a back window he added the rear hatch instead so it can swing up?... not sure on it but could be cool I guess?
Interior isn't in yet.
He has every part for this 45 just not pictured.

Only thing that isn't original is the bed which was taken from a toyota pickup.

Has the title.
Also he has 2 sets of fenders. one that is currently setup on the truck is fiberglass and he has a set of steel fenders that have been fixed.. they had some rust.
He is going to include earlier style doors that have no rust on them.
He put 3.70 gears so it would run better on the road.

To me it looks as if the only thing I need to do is paint and put the interior back in along with glass and a roof.

Its in excellent shape. Frame has been cleaned up already and painted and is straight.

Its a nice cruiser and I want to get it for the right price.

What do you guys think?

Not sure what the frame is but nothing in the picture says only from a FJ45. The corner window are from a 40 series. The gas fill should be in the right rear of the cab. What is with the two hinges in the bib? No holes for turn signals. 79 was the first year of power steering. Twelve years a 79 couldn't be imported. What year is this suppose to be?

PS: if that bed is resting where it's going to be that hatch will not open.

Not one part of that truck is a real fj45. The owner should not be calling it an fj45. It is simply a stretched 40 with hilux or stout bed, look real carefully how the frame was stretched, could be unsafe!! I would steer clear from this one, just my .2 cents!

As stated...thats NO 45.....But could be cool (IF) the frame was stretched with skill /look it over for good welds AND should have overlaping scab plates on each side of each welded section... AND YOU GET IT REALLY CHEAP !!

And so you don't get beat up by the cruiser community..... call it a FJ-42.5

Its a mut !!

my question is where did he get the right hand drive pre '63 FST 25/40 pictured in the background there?? These aren't located in Asheville are they??

The round wheel well makes it a FJ25. Not sure how you know it's right hand drive. The gas fill was on the right side on both RHD and LHD models. Like the truck I figured it was another custom piece.

You guys are right that its not a complete fj45. The cab started out and the frame started out as 45 but there are a few odds and ends that are not factory.
The front bib has the 2 hinges because he set it up so you can pretty much pull the whole front end off for serviceability.

All in all though the frame is very solid. I think it's a unique vehicle and would be nice as a custom style cruiser?
I thought about putting a utility bed on it for gear and such.

What would you guys pay for this though if you were looking at it as a personal project?

Ah, I thought the gas fill was always on the right, but couldn't remember for sure.... thus I threw out the RHD commment.

And I know rear wheel wells are FJ25, I've been around the early stuff a while now ;) but seeing all the custom work on the "FJ45" I wasn't going to rule out the possibility of cut rear wheel wells, seem it a few times on 40 and a lot of things aren't adding up in those pictures :hillbilly:

I would think in the $3k range. Personally though I would steer clear of such a custom project or atleast I wouldn't sink much money into it at all. As I think you will have a much harder time getting your money out of it compared to a normal cruiser project since it will likely appeal to a very small market.

Good Luck

That helps. I would have felt more comfortable to buy this if it was worth something but I will review this again and decide wether or not its worth putting in the money considering he does want quite a bit more than $3k for it.

If it were Ab original fj45 then I think it would be worth close to what he is asking but since its not I may just stay away from this then.

Just for perspective last year I bought a complete rust free FJ45LPB for $5900, it needed some TLC to get back on the road but it was all there.

Out of curiosity what is the asking price??

Ah yes the rounded FJ40 wheel wells. I remember a Ebay auction with 63 tub with a hard top. Seller claimed it was a rare FJ25 carry over. Had a chance to see it in person. The wheel wells had a raw edge. Another 67 soft top showed up local to me on mud that had round wheel wells. Guy was a FJC owner who just bought it. Starting asking questions about restoring. When he starting doing things the quick easy way you could tell it was going to try and flip for big bucks. It was on CL and Ebay a few times but never seen sell or show up again. Looks the same here. Someone trying to big a profit from a project that never came together. I don't see this as just paint job and interior. I just see a bunch of parts sitting on a frame. The top is going to have to be custom made.

To the OP what is it titles as? If it's a FJ40 then check how the frame was stretched. If it has a FJ45 frame I would check to see what shape it's in. If he had none of the body parts it could have been from a rust bucket.

It's definitely a fj45 frame.

I'm keen to keep this as a cool unique vehicle but if its so chop cut it may as well be a jeep buggy or something..
Just looking for a truck this time because I had a 72 fj40 and it just needed more room.

The guy that has all these cruisers is a major collector of all things cruiser. He had about 5-6 different cruisers just sitting in the back.. Definitely a honey hole if you needed any parts.

The fj25 is a complete original and has been blasted a whole back but dies have a bit of rust

Judging by what he said about the 45 I question how complete and original that 25 is. That is not the correct rear jump seat and the gas fill goes on the right side just like a FJ40. Here is a 25 I've had store away for ten years and it's pretty complete but wouldn't make the statement complete original.

As for having many cruisers I sure JP could put him to shame.

LOL you have room to talk John:grinpimp: Although I think I have had to work a lot harder for my hoard than you western guys.... you guys are practically tripping over cool old cruisers out that way ;)

AZ doesn't have as many of these old gems as you think. That grey 25 came from Northwestern part of Oregon not to far off the coast. Won it on Ebay. The FJ45 came from around the Sacramento with a lead from John Pardi back in the mid ninties. I gone up into Washington to pick up a cruiser also. I believe Montana and Wyoming has a ton of these hidden cruisers that came off of ranches. I think you have gotten a few there.

What type of grease was that and where can you find it?

X2 I would like to know myself. I've been trying it for years with no luck. Only way I see it looking better is a full blown frame off. Parts for that are being collected.:)

That's some Greg greg junk! I seen that truck a gazillion times. Its pieced together as is rest of his junk. He didn't do the cab work, I believe the truck was a diesel. Does the Title match the frame numbers? Because he used not to have the title. I have dealt with him for 14 years any questions just ask!
