I'm pretty sure that all lock-out hubs in 1977 were still aftermarket units being installed at the dealer. AFAIK, they came over here with drive flanges from the factory. Those are Dualmatic hubs.

Ah...thank you. time to surf and see what hubs are good with my 77. Ive heard that this particular year has some peculiarities to its fittings down there.
Do you know what is commonly used, i see people saying Warn and Aisin mostly from old fj's?

My '77 has Selectro hubs, and the sticky remains of an old Warn info sticker on the left side of the dash. All my parts rigs had Warn hubs and the same sticker on the same side of the dash and they even came from different states.
If Jeff's hunch is correct, perhaps Warn hubs became 'standardized' by dealer preference, with customers swapping them out later by choice or by necessity. In your case, the WITWDTPODT (why in the world did the previous owner do that?)
is in order.

Actually, those hubs are really the same. AFAIK, Selectro bought out Dualmatic and coninued making the same lock-out hub with a different name on them.
Most FJ40's around this time were treated with Warn lock-outs from the dealer around that time, and that's why we see so many with the sticker on the dash. Some however, left the dealer lot with drive flanges still on them (My '74 came like that) and lock-outs were later installed by the new owner.

It looks like Dualmatic was bought out by Selectro which was then bought by Milemarker. Sounds like they are ok hubs, but new replacement parts are no longer availible.
If they work, use em. When they stop, replace them once and for all with Asian hubs.

That's really interesting. I'm surprised that US market rigs came with drive flanges in the 70's. Seems prehistoric, but that shows you what I know.
FWIW, I really like my Selectro hubs. You get a whole handful--which is nice if your hands are cold, or the hubs have warmed up and aren't turning easily.

Oy, busted hub. Man o man, did a lot of reading on this.
It seems that warn and selectro/dualmatic hubs were the preference. Opinion varies, but they seem to be pretty solid.

From what Ive seen, there were aisin hubs as well, but the jist is its hard to find for 76-78 for it i think? Has to do with the birfield joint and how far it extends i think. And something about the spline.

Im a bit of a noob, so im just learning as I go and trying to keep it fun, and as long as I have Berta back together before the nice spring weather..then..success! Personally, Im not going to do *crazy* off roading, my fj is pretty original and cherry (2 different hubs is a FEATURE) and im going to do funner projects that are geared towards slow cross country camping trips (custom boxes/rollcage cabinets/tenting. I just need it to work, im not rock crawling (not yet anyhow).
Not sure my options, may just try and find a functioning selectro or dualmatic set and hope it fits. Parts hunting, whew! Any thoughts?

I'll try to make it simpler-here's how I understand it: Hub wise there are two different flavors. Short body and long body-see the picture. Your hub needs to match the axle stub length on your birf. 76-78 vehicles came with long birfs, so you need a long body hub. They exist, but they are not common. That would be the simplest thing to do.
An alternative would be to find short birfs and short body hubs and replace them all. These are widely available. The problem is that these short birfs are also slightly fatter so you would have to take a grinder to your axle housing to get them to fit. Not a big deal, just more work. And if you were going to the trouble to take your birfs out, you're going to want to rebuild your knuckles. And now your broken hub becomes an even bigger, dirtier, more expensive job.
I would see if you can find some long body hubs.

So just 76-78 is the longer version? I cant use hubs from before or after then? I look at parts on ebay, but it can be hard to tell if it is right or not. May just have to cross my fingers

You don't need to cross your fingers. Those old hubs won't work for you.
I was trying to make the story simpler by leaving out the part about earlier hubs and birfs.
Old drum brake birfs use a different spline count (coarse) and newer 76+ use fine splines.
Again, you have to match the spline count to the hub. So old hubs will only work with coarse spline birfs.
You need 76-78 hubs. On MUD they are usually referred to as 'long body' hubs. There was a pair listed here in the classifieds this summer. I don't know if they sold. These are just like the ones on my 78.

Those long-bodied Aisins also come by the name of Asco. If it were me, I would swap those out for Warns until you decide to do an FJ60 knuckle swap, where you can then go to the short-bodied Aisins which are found on FJ60s, late FJ40s, and early minitrucks.

IMHO, unless this will be crawling rocks, there's not a lot of need to go replacing the knuckles, hubs, birfs, steering arms,...when all you need is hubs, just to make it easier to source birfs if you break one someday.

I have a set of Warns that came off of my '78 this summer when I switched to Long's and Aisans. PM me if you are interested and I'm sure we can work something out. For that matter, I also have axles that I don't need if you want spares
