I was messing around with my 40 tonight and I thought I would post pics of the locking hubs. I have seen the Aisin and Warn hubs discussed here, but I was not sure how common Selectro's were to FJ40's (I know they aren't stock...). Does anyone else have a set of these on their rig?

JohnnyC, thanks for the fast action on finding that thread. Looks like I need to spend less time on the Shiner Bocks and more time on using the FAQ.

I have a set on my 11/72 FJ. As far as I know, they were installed when the original owner bought it off the lot in CA.

I have a 1/1969 FJ40 and it had those installed by the dealer. I like them because you can use a gloved hand , in the cold, and they are easier than the finger insert style.

I had them on my first 74, FJ40 back in high school... That was in '92 and it was equipped with them when I bought it. Now I own a '72, 40 and it also has Selectro Hubs. So I just thought they came that way from the factory. Both cruisers I bought had previous owners so I don't actually know if they came that way originally.
I agree with fhawk5 that they are much easier to operate in the cold especially here in Colorado. Not having to pulls the gloves off to activate the hubs is quite nice indeed. I also have never had a problem with Selecrto Hubs on either of the two cruisers I owned.
Thanks JohnnyC for the Links... Quite informative!

Hello. I have 1 selectro hub and 1 of another brand (cant remember the other brand). I had some trouble with one of the original hubs and someone gave me a new selectro hub. It is good to use except for 2 things: 1 The selectro hub turns the opposite way to lock and unlock, so i have to remember which way i have to turn mine as they arent both selectro.
2. When a dog pisses on a selectro youll get the piss all over your hands when you go to turn the hubs, if youve got something like aisin youll only get the piss on the end of your fingers :D

Mine jumped off the truck when the front end came down under power climbing a ledge. Broke into 3 pieces. Switched to Aisins and haven't looked back. They are easy to use though.

My buddy had them on his 69 fj40 one fell off on the trail. He's running worn hubs now and hasn't had any problems as far as I know

My understanding is that our 40's originally came to the States with drive plates/flanges installed that spun the front drivetrain all the time. Dealers could opt to swap those drive plates out for selectable lockouts. Most common choices were Warn and Selectro.

My '78 came to me with Selectros on it and I thought they were cool. One of them grenaded on my buddy when he was out wheeling my 40.

Pigs (FJ-55) on the other hand got selectable lock-outs from the factory, including the long-body Aisin/ASCO hub for '76-'78 birfields.

Selectable locking hubs were a dealer item as Pablo stated. Selectro was the "cost efficient" option. Mile Marker makes the Selectro line now but doesn't offer a rebuild kit for them.

I have a set of course spline "Destructo" locking hubs waiting for the right owner. I went to fine splines and Warn's. Still looking for a set of Aisin's though.
