I dig Foo, but have you weigh foo. Seem like thing are a bet over built. on my rig I try to find the happy ground be twine strong & light
Built out the way you see it in post 814 with recovery gear & my tool kit it weighs in it 5500Lb. give or take few. Keeping it light seem to make a big difference. JMHO
What size ram is that , on my hydro set up I used a 9 " ram. Lock to lock I had 9 5/8 " of total travel. I did not think the little bet of lost turning radius would madder, but it made a big difference.
Not to offend but i think that's the tie rod you are referring not the drag link .
Keep up all the good work !!! Always looking to meet up with other 80 Guys to wheel, would enjoy Wheeling with you some Day .

Yes, I tend to overbuild..... GUILTY. I built a deck years ago and the building inspector said the house would blow over before the deck ever moved. As I am typing this I am trying to figure out how I can brace this bracket for the ram so if it ever hits a rock, it won't bend up. Again overbuild the snot out of it....

The Volvo portals only have 5.1" movement, so that is why it is such a small ram.

Yes, you are correct, tie rods connect the two wheels. Thank you for correcting me. I am a numbers guy, never good with names!

Never weighed it or any of my projects.... scales have never been nice to me.

I really like the portals axles, But I don't know if I could give up that much turning radius. I was impressed was the 80s ability to turn full lock turns on 37s with out rubbing frame or suspension components. with a much tighter turning radius then say Jeep or mini trucks.

I am still getting used to them.... because you can clear the height of a 5 gallon bucket, it changes what you consider an obstacle on the trail. with the 40" tires it makes big rocks seem small.... This is really a wild feeling. I drove the night run with my lights off down the creekbed and never hit anything that seemed difficult. The people following me remarked that following Foo is different as you can't use my line as an example of what to do.

Going out later this month, so plan to test again, and then I need to decide if I want to sell it or not. Got a buggy on my mind.

Progress. Got the bottom plate tacked in place then started working on the top plate. Ended up bending the front edge of it down 99 degrees and will weld it to the bottom plate. I will also add spacers to add additional bracing to the front axle tube welded to the plates

Looking good, do you have a brake for bending the plate ?

Before I burn this in forever, I need to put the drag link back on and pull the springs and check for clearance.

Nice I half to heat with a torch and beat with a hammer

That little press brake made out of scrap steel has been one of the best little things in my shop.... I just made a dimple die for it to make floor panels. Only issue is the width of the press.

Just following along, That looks to close to me. when the bump stop compress you may have contact. When I set mine up I thought I had plenty of clearance, and there was for rock crawling but when I went to the dunes the bump stop compressed enough to put the ram into the oil pan severing the hydro line and puting a hole in the pan. And put a end to my wheeling day.

Good point. As I have no other way to go with the ram, I was thinking about adding to the bump stop to limit that chance.... you just solidified that need.

Burning.

Replaced the pump also, so everything is new on the steering system..... got the ram installed, and we have Hydro assist steering !!!

I’m a little worried about the hoses, there’s about an inch of clearance on each side of them. Definitely need to figure out how to make sure they never get bound up in all of the moving parts...

Add a half inch spacer to the Front left side for insurance that it will never hit anything

Here’s the not so old pump that was ruined by running those 40 inch tires for a weekend without Hydro....

That tree has pulled out so many bumpers and body panels!

scary part was that I could not get the right angle clamp in the area I needed it, so I just fabbed up a puller.... It did not clamp down, so I shortened up the come-along, to increase power and lower the chance of it flying off....

Here is the clamp I bought that would not fit for this project.
