Last part of the portal transition is to organize rear storage around the spare tire. Found that the best way to store it is flat however I could put storage underneath it. Using an idea I’m stealing from @kc_chevota of using Dewalt tough tool box storage. Looks like I can put three of them deep underneath the tire. Waterproof and will store all sorts of tools. oil or recovery gear. Mocked it up in plywood, will pick up some steel to fabricate this. Will also move the roto-pak fuel to other side and mount the subwoofer higher on the side.

Think about needing to open the tailgate to get to the tools. That's not always easy/convenient/possible... Same with recovery gear.
Being a Debbie Downer I'm always playing out the "what if"s

Totally agree. most of my recovery gear is in the rear storage in the rear tailgate, that you can still get to anytime. I had this happen last week, when the car rotated on a ledge and was inches from a tree, so the tailgate would not drop, so I know exactly what you are talking about. Anyway, with no top, you just reach over, open the boat hatch door in the rear tailgate and there is the winch controller, shackles, tree straps, etc.

I am talking about putting extra stuff in these boxes, and tools and oil and replacement parts. Thanks for clarifying, as you are absolutely correct.

I've been reading my way through this thread over the last week or so, got bummed that it was over. And then I realized the last post is from yesterday. I guess I'm all caught up on binge reading and now I have to wait for the new episodes. Anyway, I love this build. Definitely gonna copy some of the smaller ideas (bumper, boat hatches, etc). I love the portals, but just reading how much work it took was wearing me out. Definitely look forward to where this thing goes, although I don't know how much there is left to modify...

Got frame made. Been thinking really hard about how to mount the tire to it and think I finally just decided to use straps connected to this frame that will be bolted to the floor. Since tire is quite heavy, don’t really want to have something you’ll have to pick it up and go over like a bolt mount on top of this frame. Also, I will be able to strap it to the roll cage on the front side, so it will not go anywhere

You are very kind. Foo has been quite an awesome journey and the Portals (and those 39.5" tires) just take this to a total different level. I am not sure it would be here today if it were not for my good friend Rob that helped build it along the way. He is no longer with us, so it is very emotional to look back at the old pages of these threads.

Speaking of.... Foo also had two other sub threads in case you missed some details...

How are you going to reach box 2 & 3?
Really??? Not had coffee yet? You have to pull one out, reach in and grab the next, the last one will have a string attached to it to make it easier. My plan is to put Tools in the first, more tools and power dewalt tools in the second and replacement parts in the third one -- things not needed much. These boxes are pretty big, and hold a bunch of stuff. 22x13x6

It seems like reaching in over the open tailgate to box 2 and especially 3 would be difficult... I'll be interested to see how it works once it's all done. I'd be inclined to over engineer some mechanism/method for getting to them... but I guess if box 3 is almost never needed it'll be fine in any case.

Gotcha... I tested that issue on the wood version. I can reach over tailgate and can get to #2 box easily; however, I am tall and have the wingspan of a young T-rex -- who everyone feared.

Filled up the tool box and oil/spares box, mounted The subwoofer up high and moved the gas can to the opposite side. I reused the highlift Jack tiedown method I had used before.

well, Foo has been wonderful. Both of my kids learned to drive on her, and she has taken me to places I never thought possible.... but time for her to find a new owner. My oldest is off to College, so decided to go a different direction. As we all want to be like @woody I started my search for a hendrix frame ftoy. Found this one in Virginia and grabbed it up.

What a journey this has been
